Orioles signed RHP Joel Pineiro to a minor league contract.
Pineiro hasn't appeared in the majors since 2011, when he posted an ugly 5.13 ERA in 145 2/3 innings with the Angels. He'll likely open the 2013 season at Triple-A. Feb 4 - 12:08 PM

Joel Pineiro has elected free agency.

He was shut down in July after having surgery to repair a SLAP tear in the labrum of his right shoulder. Pineiro had posted a 2.96 ERA, 0.82 WHIP and 19/1 K/BB ratio over 24 1/3 innings at two minor league levels before the injury. If he's healthy enough and chooses to continue his career, he'll likely have to accept an incentive-laden minor league deal with an invitation to spring training.

Orioles manager Buck Showalter said Joel Pineiro's shoulder surgery was "more extensive" than initially thought.

Pineiro had surgery to repair a SLAP tear in the labrum in his right shoulder. He was already going to miss the rest of the season, but it's certainly conceivable that the operation could be a career-ender if the damage was really significantly worse than anticipated. Pineiro will turn 34 in September and will be a free agent this winter.

Joel Pineiro will undergo surgery Tuesday to repair a SLAP tear in the labrum in his right shoulder.

SLAP is an acronym that stands for "superior labrum from anterior to posterior." Doctors also plan to take a look at his rotator cuff, so there could be even more damage. Pineiro was pitching at Triple-A in hopes to work his way back to the majors, but the surgery will shut him down for the rest of the year.

Joel Pineiro (shoulder) is scheduled to pitch five innings Tuesday with the Orioles' Gulf Coast League affiliate.

It will be his first official start since being shut down in early May with shoulder soreness. The Orioles signed Pineiro in April with the idea of using him as a long-man out of the bullpen, but he'll have to prove his health first.

Joel Pineiro (shoulder) pitched four innings in a simulated game Thursday.

Pineiro has been on Triple-A Norfolk's disabled list for a month with shoulder soreness. He'll pitch in a Gulf Coast League game Tuesday before likely rejoining Norfolk.

Joel Pineiro is going on the disabled list with Triple-A Norfolk due to a sore right shoulder.

Pineiro signed a minor league deal with the O's last month and had a 3.65 ERA over his first two starts with the Tides. It was a worthwhile gamble, but he can't be relied on at this point.

Joel Pineiro tossed six innings of one-run ball Thursday in his first start with Triple-A Norfolk.

Pineiro, who recently signed a minor league deal with Baltimore, allowed three hits while striking out five and walking none. He threw 55 out of 75 pitches for strikes. It's not clear how many more starts he'll make in the minors, but the Orioles currently envision the veteran right-hander as a long-man out of the bullpen.

Joel Pineiro threw five innings Thursday in an extended spring training game.

Pinero, who signed a minor league deal with the O's earlier this month, is now expected to report to Triple-A Norfolk. Coming off a terrible 5.13 ERA with the Angels last year, the veteran right-hander will function as rotation depth.

Orioles signed RHP Joel Pineiro to a minor league contract; assigned him to Triple-A Norfolk.

Pineiro failed to crack the Phillies' Opening Day roster this spring after agreeing to a minor league deal in mid-January. The right-hander should have a little more luck in Baltimore, where the pitching depth is ever-shaky.

Phillies released RHP Joel Pineiro.

Pineiro signed a minor league contract with the Phillies in mid-January that included an invitation to spring training, but he never stood much of a chance of cracking the Opening Day roster. The 33-year-old right-hander allowed seven hits and five runs (three earned) in six innings of Grapefruit League action.

Matt Gelb of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports that Joel Pineiro can opt out of his minor league contract if he's not added to the major-league roster by March 31.

It's Pineiro's right under the rules of baseball's new collective bargaining agreement, as he's a player with more than six years of service time that signed a minor league deal after his major league deal expired. Not surprisingly, Pineiro said he's yet to give any thought about possibly opting out of the deal. "At the moment, I haven't even thought about that," he said. "I'm thinking the best thing is going to happen to me, whether it's here or with another ball club."

A source told ESPN's Jayson Stark that the Phillies and Joel Pineiro have agreed to a minor league contract.

It's hard to believe no one was willing to give Pineiro a guarantee of a couple of million. Perhaps a couple of teams did and the sinkerballer simply preferred to pitch for a sure World Series contender in Philadelphia. Pineiro will make for a great fallback in case Joe Blanton or another starter has a setback this spring.

Joel Pineiro deserved a win Sunday but didn't get one, picking up a no-decision after tossing 6 1/3 shutout innings on just three hits in a loss to the Athletics.

Pineiro had the A's hitting wormburners all day with his sinker, but then the Halos' bullpen promptly imploded, giving up six runs over the final two innings. The loss essentially kills the Angels' playoff hopes, as they'll now have to sweep Texas, have Boston lose three of four and Tampa lose two of three just to get into a one-game playoff. Pineiro's disappointing season concludes with a 5.13 ERA and 1.51 WHIP. He'll be a free agent over the offseason.

Joel Pineiro didn't pitch well but still picked up a win Tuesday, allowing four runs on nine hits and two walks over six innings in a 10-6 win over the Blue Jays.

He struck out three while moving his record to an even 7-7. The outing lowers Pineiro's still-awful second-half ERA to 8.03 and WHIP to 1.78. The veteran's final outing of the season will come this weekend against the A's.
