Carlos Zambrano threw two scoreless innings and had five strikeouts Saturday in extended spring training.
The Phillies' current plan calls for Zambrano to pitch in another extended spring game next week before possibly sending him to a minor league affiliate. He was able to throw 44 pitches Saturday and will continue to be stretched out as a starter. Zambrano will be an option for the Phillies' rotation at some point this season. May 18 - 2:48 PM

Phillies signed RHP Carlos Zambrano to a minor league contract.

Zambrano recently agreed to a deal with the independent Long Island Ducks, but never reported to the club because he was confident he would be able to find a minor league deal somewhere. And he has. The 31-year-old had a mediocre 4.49 ERA and 95/75 K/BB ratio over 132 1/3 innings last season with the Marlins and will function as starting pitching depth for Philadelphia. He'll report to extended spring training for now and could be an option for the rotation down the line.

Carlos Zambrano threw for potentially interested teams in Miami on Monday.

The Phillies, Orioles, Blue Jays, Yankees and Reds were reportedly in attendance for the throwing session. Big Z recently agreed to terms with the Long Island Ducks of the independent Atlantic League, but he's yet to ink his name to a contract because the right-hander believes he can net a minor league deal with someone. Zambrano posted a 4.49 ERA and 95/75 K/BB ratio over 132 1/3 innings with the Marlins last season.

Phillies GM Ruben Amaro shot down media reports on Saturday that his team had signed veteran right-hander Carlos Zambrano, but added that they could consider it.

Zambrano failed to attract interest on the open market this winter and recently signed with the Long Island Ducks of the independent Atlantic League in an effort to draw the attention of MLB clubs. The Phillies could use some depth in their rotation, but the 31-year-old will have to pitch well in indy ball before they give him a try.

Carlos Zambrano has signed with the Long Island Ducks of the independent Atlantic League.

Carrie Muskat of MLB.com has confirmed the signing. Zambrano failed to attract much interest over the winter he posted a 4.49 ERA and 95/75 K/BB ratio over 132 1/3 innings with the Marlins last season. His previous baggage was also likely a factor. However, he'll attempt to parlay his play with the Ducks into another opportunity with a major league club.
May 8 - 10:53 AM

Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune was told by a source that Carlos Zambrano may sign with a team in Japan or Taiwan if he can't find a major league deal.

There hasn't been much chatter about Zambrano this winter after he posted a 4.49 ERA and 95/75 K/BB ratio over 132 1/3 innings with the Marlins in 2012. Perhaps he'll find a spot if there's an injury somewhere, but adding in his previous baggage, getting a guaranteed deal in MLB appears doubtful right now.
Feb 12 - 12:14 PM

The Marlins have moved Carlos Zambrano to the bullpen.

It's unclear whether the move is permanent, but Wade LeBlanc will take Zambrano's place in the rotation against the Braves on Wednesday. Big Z has an underwhelming 4.54 ERA and 83/67 K/BB ratio in 115 innings across 20 starts this season, including a 7.62 ERA over his last nine starts.

Carlos Zambrano struggles continued in Friday’s loss to the Padres, allowing four runs on three hits and four walks in his five-plus innings of work.

Zambrano also fanned four on the evening. He cruised through the first five innings without incident, but completely fell apart in the sixth. The first five hitters reached against him in the frame, including a three-run triple off the bat of Yasmani Grandal that chased him from the game. Big Z has really struggled with his command of late, walking 14 hitters over his last three starts, spanning 14 1/3 innings. He’ll look to turn things around when he takes on the Braves in Atlanta on Wednesday, but is probably best left on fantasy benches until he can demonstrate improved control.

Carlos Zambrano issued six walks on Saturday against the Pirates, leading to five runs (four earned) on three hits in just 3 1/3 innings.

Zambrano struck out two but hit two batters. The Pirates used two hit batsmen, four walks, an error and a sacrifice fly to push four runs across in the fourth inning. Whether he’s hiding an injury or merely having difficulty locating the strike zone, Big Z should be benched in most fantasy leagues.

Carlos Zambrano skated on thin ice Monday but managed to survive relatively unscathed, allowing three runs on eight hits and four walks over six innings in a 5-3 win over the Nationals.

Big Z again allowed a ton of baserunners but managed to escape with his 11th quality start of the season. It’s just his second in his last seven tries, though, and he’s sporting an ugly 2.09 WHIP over that stretch. He can’t be trusted this weekend in Pittsburgh.

Carlos Zambrano struggled in a losing effort against the Cardinals on Saturday, allowing three runs on seven hits over his five innings of work.

Big Z fanned four and walked two on the day. All of the damage came in the fourth inning where the first four Cardinals reached, including a two-run triple from Tony Cruz. After starting off the season strong, Zambrano has seen his ERA rise from 2.81 to 3.84 over his last six outings. He finishes the first half of the season with a 4-7 record and 75/53 K/BB ratio in 100 2/3 innings.

Carlos Zambrano was so-so Monday, allowing five runs – three earned – on five hits and four walks over six innings in a loss to the Brewers.

Big Z was hurt by his defense in a second straight start but to his credit gutted it out for another acceptable outing. His K/BB ratio has gone south in a hurry, though, as it’s sitting at 15/22 over his last five starts. His 3.76 ERA and 1.35 WHIP for the year are still acceptable, but we can’t really recommend him in mixed leagues right now. Zambrano faces the Cardinals this weekend.

Carlos Zambrano allowed three runs in five innings Wednesday in a no-decision against the Red Sox.

Zambrano gave up 11 runs over 4 1/3 innings in his previous two starts, so this is an improvement. Still, it wasn't exactly what the Marlins were hoping for. He walked four more batters tonight, bringing his season total to 42 in 83 innings. Since his fastball isn't what it was, he can't get away with that.

Carlos Zambrano struggled badly with his command against the Rays on Friday, allowing four runs on three hits and six walks in two-plus innings of work.

He also struck out three in the short outing. Perhaps the back stiffness that forced him out of his previous start was a bigger issue than he let on, but Zambrano surely didn’t look like himself in this one. With the loss, he drops to 4-5 on the season, and his once pristine ERA falls even further to 3.92. Should he take his next turn in the rotation, he would pitch on Thursday against the Red Sox in Boston, but watch out for the possibility that he misses a start while recovering from the back issue.

Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen doesn't think Carlos Zambrano (back) will have to miss a start.

Big Z had to leave Saturday's outing with lower back stiffness, admitting that he stayed in the game longer than he should have. He's much improved after receiving treatment, though, and should be ready to go by Friday. "I feel much better now," Zambrano said. "I had a treatment (Saturday). I'll continue (Sunday). I've been through this before -- tight back. When I feel like that it's hard for me to pitch, get nice and loose."
