Date:

Ryan Vogelsong will start the Pirates' season finale against the Cardinals on Sunday.

The Pirates hadn't officially named a starter for the final game, and it looks like the veteran right-hander will get one more turn. That could be a good development for the Cardinals who are still in the thick of the National League wild card race.
Sep 29 - 10:12 PM

Ryan Vogelsong was touched up for four runs while walking five batters over five innings in Tuesday's loss to the Cubs.

The five free passes were a season-high for the struggling right-hander. Over his last six starts, Vogelsong has yet to go more than five innings and has allowed at least four runs in five of six outings. Vogelsong's turn comes up Sunday in St. Louis, but the Pirates might give that start to someone else.
Sep 27 - 11:28 PM

Ryan Vogelsong surrendered two runs on two hits over four innings in Thursday's loss to the Brewers.

Vogelsong struck out seven and walked two on the evening. A two-run home run by Scooter Gennett spelled the entirety of the scoring damage. As currently scheduled, the veteran right-hander will make starts against the Cubs and the Cardinals before the regular season closes out. Over 72 1/3 innings, Vogelsong has pitched to a 4.85 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 55/32 K/BB ratio. A facial fracture cost him a large chunk of the season.
Sep 22 - 11:04 PM

Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said Tuesday that Ryan Vogelsong will remain in the starting rotation.

Vogelsong has a 10.19 ERA over his last four starts and he got hammered for six runs -- four earned -- over 4 2/3 innings last Friday by the last-place Reds. But the 75-75 Pirates really don't have anything to lose. "An opportunity to go back out there and get something done," Hurdle said. "We’re probably banking on his experience as well in a rotation that’s very young right now."
Sep 21 - 11:19 AM

Pirates GM Neal Huntington hinted Sunday that Ryan Vogelsong could be removed from the rotation.

Vogelsong was lit up for six runs -- four earned -- over 4 2/3 innings Friday night by the last-place Reds and holds a brutal 10.19 ERA over his last four outings. "It certainly is a valid question, as to who gives us the best chance to win the next time or two times from now when his rotation spot comes up," said Huntington. "Ryan feels there’s a mechanical adjustment that he can and will make moving forward. It’s hard to walk away from his first stretch of starts for us."
Sep 19 - 10:53 AM

Ryan Vogelsong was knocked around in a no-decision against the Reds on Friday, surrendering six runs (four earned) on seven hits over 4 2/3 innings.

Vogelsong punched out four on the night while walking two. Ramon Cabrera tagged him for a two-run homer in the second inning, then he kept the Reds off the board until they erupted for four and chased him in the fifth. He now sports a troublesome 4.87 ERA and 1.46 WHIP on the season and appears to be wearing down. He should be completely avoided for Thursday's matchup against the Brewers in Milwaukee.
Sep 17 - 12:00 AM

Ryan Vogelsong was battered for six earned runs over four innings Sunday in a loss to the Reds.

Cincinnati pounced for five runs on a walk, two singles, and two triples in the top of the second inning. Vogelsong has been getting worse with every passing week and can't be trusted as a fantasy streamer at the moment, no matter the matchup. He gets the Reds again next time out.
Sep 11 - 4:42 PM

Ryan Vogelsong lasted just four innings Tuesday, allowing five runs in a loss to the Cardinals.

Vogelsong put the Pirates in an early hole when he served up a grand slam to Yadier Molina in the first inning. Matt Adams also took him deep in the third. Vogelsong pitched well in his first five starts since rejoining the rotation, but he's struggled each of the last two times out. Assuming he isn't booted from the rotation, he'll get the Reds this weekend.
Sep 7 - 12:07 AM

Ryan Vogelsong was charged with five runs in five-plus innings Wednesday in a loss to the Cubs.

Vogelsong got a little party afterwards anyway; he reached 10 years of service time this week, which maxes out his pension. The 39-year-old right-hander had been pretty good since rejoining the Pirates rotation on Aug. 4. He'll likely get a chance to finish out the year as a starter.
Sep 1 - 12:26 AM

Ryan Vogelsong punched out six over 5 1/3 innings of two-run ball in Friday's victory over the Brewers.

The veteran right-hander allowed four hits and four walks on the night. All of the damage against him came in the sixth inning, where he allowed a pair of runners to reach who rode home on a three-run homer off the bat of Orlando Arcia after Vogelsong had departed. He has done a nice job thus far with the Pirates, registering a 3.02 ERA and 1.28 WHIP on the season. He draws a tough matchup next time out, taking on the Cubs at Wrigley Field on Wednesday.
Aug 26 - 11:46 PM

Ryan Vogelsong turned in a quality start in Sunday's loss to the Marlins, surrendering three runs (one earned) on three hits over six innings.

Vogelsong struck out five and walked two on the afternoon. Christian Yelich burned him for a solo home run in the first inning, with two more runs coming home in the fifth. In four starts since returning from facial fractures suffered at the end of May, the veteran right-hander has allowed 10 runs (six earned) on 18 hits over 23 2/3 innings. A road start against the Brewers shows next on his schedule as he continues to work his way back into form.
Aug 21 - 6:03 PM

Taking on his former team, Ryan Vogelsong picked up a win Monday after giving up four runs in 5 2/3 innings against the Giants.

Vogelsong was just good enough tonight, taking advantage of the six runs the Pirates scored in the first five innings. He'll remain in the rotation and face the Marlins on Sunday.
Aug 16 - 2:27 AM

Ryan Vogelsong pitched six innings while giving up two runs -- both unearned -- but was charged with a loss versus the Padres on Wednesday.

He allowed just three base hits and one walk to go with five strikeouts. The unearned runs scored in the second inning when Vogelsong and Jung-Ho Kang both made errors. Vogelsong was making his second start since being activated off the DL after missing two months for being hit in the face with a pitch. Both starts have been excellent. He has a 2.67 ERA with 27 strikeouts in 33 2/3 innings overall.
Aug 10 - 10:31 PM

Ryan Vogelsong allowed one run on three hits over six innings in a no-decision Thursday against the Braves.

The Braves will make a lot of pitchers look good, but it sure didn't seem like Vogelsong had a lot of rust after missing more than two months due to facial fractures. The right-hander walked just one while striking out six, and he needed 83 pitches to get through his six innings of work. The outing, paired with his 2.86 ERA in four rehab starts, suggests Vogelsong has a bit left in the tank, and the Pirates likely can't afford not to keep the 39-year-old in the rotation going forward. We'll see if he can repeat his success Wednesday against the Padres.
