Vogelsong needed the outing badly as he'd been having a tough spring leading into the start. He gave up only two hits and two walks while striking out four. Ryan Vogelsong allowed three runs -- two earned -- over 2 2/3 innings against the Diamondbacks Saturday.

Vogelsong gave up four hits and a walk, striking out one in the outing. It was the continuation of a trend this spring for the right-hander, as he now owns a 9.39 ERA in 7 2/3 innings. Vogelsong is a veteran, though, so there is plenty of time for him to round into shape before the season starts.
Mar 15 - 12:17 AM

Ryan Vogelsong had a rough go of things Thursday against the Giants, yielding four runs in two innings of work.

Vogelsong was four runs in debt in a flash, as he allowed back-to-back singles to lead off the second inning before walking Kris Bryant to load the bases. Kyle Schwarber unloaded them with a grand slam to right field. Vogelsong, 37, will likely serve as a swingman for the Giants. He finished with a 4.00 ERA and a 151/58 K/BB ratio in 184 2/3 innings last season.
Mar 5 - 6:23 PM

Giants re-signed RHP Ryan Vogelsong to a one-year, $4 million contract.

He'll have the chance to earn more through incentives. Vogelsong chose the Giants over the Astros even though he'll likely enter the season as a long reliever if Matt Cain (elbow) and Tim Hudson (ankle) progress as hoped. The 37-year-old held a 4.00 ERA and 1.28 WHIP in 32 starts with the defending champs last year.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that Ryan Vogelsong has agreed to a one-year deal with the Giants, pending a physical.

Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle says it's worth $4 million plus performance incentives. Vogelsong chose comfortability over role here, as he looks like, at best, the Giants' sixth starter, whereas he would've had a good shot to be the Astros' No. 5 man. The veteran right-hander will provide protection with both Matt Cain (elbow) and Tim Hudson (ankle) working their way back from surgery.
Jan 23 - 11:11 AM

Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle writes that it looks like a deal between the Giants and Ryan Vogelsong "will happen."

It's expected to be a one-year deal. Vogelsong was said to be in serious talks with the Astros, but he apparently had a change of heart at some point. The Giants have been on the lookout for another starter, so it makes sense that they are going in a familiar direction.
Jan 22 - 4:18 PM

According to Jerry Crasnick of, the Astros have not been told that they're out of the running for free agent right-hander Ryan Vogelsong.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reported late Wednesday night that Vogelsong had shifted course on the Astros after meeting with team officials Monday in Texas and was suddenly engaged in serious negotiations with the Giants. But that message apparently wasn't relayed to Houston. Vogelsong, 37, will likely have to settle for a one-year contract wherever he lands.
Jan 22 - 10:58 AM

Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports hears Ryan Vogelsong is in "serious discussions" with the Giants.

That's quite a 180-degree turn from a day ago when most people assumed Vogelsong and the Astros would strike a one-year deal. Tim Hudson recently needed another right ankle surgery and Matt Cain is returning from an elbow procedure, so the 37-year-old Vogelsong may be given another chance in San Francisco. Vogelsong had a 4.00 ERA and 1.28 WHIP in 32 starts with the defending champs last year.
Jan 21 - 10:35 PM

The Giants remain in contact with Ryan Vogelsong, according to Chris Haft of

Vogelsong's agent, Dave Meier, said he's maintained contact with the Giants on Vogelsong's behalf. His client was also reportedly in Houston recently, and reports had the Astros interested as well. Vogelsong, 37, will likely find a one-year deal wherever he lands.
Jan 21 - 9:16 PM

Evan Drellich of the Houston Chronicle reports that Ryan Vogelsong's potential deal with the Astros would be for one year.

That's what you'd expect, given that Vogelsong will turn 38 in the middle of next season. The right-hander was in Houston on Monday to take a physical and left town without officially agreeing to a deal, but the feeling is that something will get done. Vogelsong posted a 4.00 ERA and 1.28 WHIP over 32 starts last season for the Giants.
Jan 20 - 8:34 PM

ESPN's Jerry Crasnick hears that the Astros and Ryan Vogelsong are hopeful for a deal and working through some final steps.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reported Monday that the two sides were in "serious discussions" and Vogelsong is in Houston, so it sounds like some mere formalities are in the way of making the deal official. No word yet on the terms involved.
Jan 20 - 9:47 AM

Brian McTaggart of reports that free agent right-hander Ryan Vogelsong was in Houston on Monday.

The Astros are reportedly in "serious discussions" with Vogelsong and this suggests that he could be in town for a pre-signing physical. However, the free agent starter told McTaggart that he isn't ready to comment on the situation. Vogelsong, 38, posted a 4.00 ERA and 1.28 WHIP over 32 starts last season for the Giants. If signed, he would join Dallas Keuchel, Collin McHugh, Scott Feldman, and Brett Oberholtzer in Houston's rotation.
Jan 20 - 8:44 AM

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Astros are in "serious discussions" with Ryan Vogelsong.

Evan Drellich of the Houston Chronicle first reported of the Astros' interest in Vogelsong on Sunday, and it appears that they could be closing in on a deal. Houston just acquired Dan Straily to presumably slide into the No. 5 spot in the rotation, but it looks like they're going to add another arm to the mix. Vogelsong put up a 4.00 ERA and 1.28 WHIP over 32 starts last season for the Giants.
Jan 19 - 6:42 PM

Evan Drellich of the Houston Chronicle reports that Ryan Vogelsong is "one Astros target."

They've also been connected to Kyle Kendrick as they look to round out their rotation. Vogelsong resurrected his career with the Giants but has been pretty bad the last two years, posting a 4.62 ERA in a pitcher-friendly park. Kendrick is another low-upside arm who would be nothing more than an innings-eater.
Jan 18 - 10:50 AM

According to FOX Sports' Jon Morosi, the Rockies are talking to free agent Ryan Vogelsong.

The Rockies want to add a veteran right-hander to their starting rotation and Vogelsong should come cheap after posting a combined 4.62 ERA (75 ERA+) over the last two seasons for San Francisco. Vogelsong turns 38 years old next July. He'd likely carry zero fantasy value in a situation where he's making half of his starts at power-happy Coors Field.
