Ryan Vogelsong yielded four runs (three earned) in six innings, taking his first loss since April 29 in Monday's start against the Pirates.
Vogelsong was strong over the first four innings, but the Pirates broke a 2-2 tie in the fifth thanks to a Neil Walker two-run double. It was one of five hits the right-hander served up while walking two and striking out five. Vogelsong had a terrific month of May, but still has a subpar 4.26 ERA with a 1.33 WHIP and a 43/22 K/BB ratio over 57 innings. He'll try again for his fifth win in a road start versus the Phillies. Ryan Vogelsong yielded only one run in six innings of work to earn the win in Wednesday's start versus the Brewers.

Vogelsong fell behind 1-0 on a fourth-inning RBI single from Elian Herrera but the Giants were able to scratch out enough runs to support him. He allowed six hits, walked none, and struck out five in the effort. Vogelsong has been stellar in five May starts, allowing only four earned runs in 31 2/3 innings. On the year, though, he has a 4.24 ERA, a 1.35 WHIP, and a 38/20 K/BB ratio in 51 innings. Vogelsong will try to bring the success into June in his next start at home against the Pirates.
May 27 - 4:50 PM

Ryan Vogelsong blanked the Rockies for six innings Friday in what turned out to be an 11-8 Giants victory.

It was 3-0 after six innings, but both teams scored eight runs from there. Vogelsong has turned in four straight effective starts after posting a 9.31 ERA in three starts and two relief appearances in April. He's 3-2 with a 4.60 ERA for the year.
May 23 - 1:37 AM

Ryan Vogelsong allowed just two runs in 5 2/3 innings, though he also walked four batters.

Vogelsong was the beneficiary of an offensive avalanche by the Giants, as the team held an 11-0 lead before the Reds managed to scratch a few runs out in the bottom of the sixth via a Jay Bruce solo homer and a run-scoring double by Skip Schumaker. Vogelsong struck out two and walked four in the game. The right-hander currently holds a 5.31 ERA and 1.49 WHIP, plus a 28/17 K/BB ratio in 39 innings and will take those numbers on the road for a date with the Rockies.
May 16 - 10:37 PM

Ryan Vogelsong pitched a gem against the Marlins on Sunday, allowing just four hits and one run over seven innings.

Vogelsong wouldn't factor into the decision, as the Giants didn't pull out the 3-2 win until the bottom of the ninth inning. He struck out five without walking a batter. Vogelsong's only mistake came when he allowed a ground rule double to Michael Morse in the fourth inning. Otherwise, nothing doing for the Marlins against the veteran right-hander. After allowing six runs to the Dodgers in a rough start on April 30, Vogelsong has given up just one run in his last fourteen innings. He's pitched to a 5.67 ERA and 1.44 WHIP with a 26/13 K/BB ratio in 33 1/3 innings. A road start against the Reds is up next.
May 10 - 7:42 PM

Ryan Vogelsong delivered seven scoreless innings to earn a win versus the Padres on Tuesday.

Vogelsong had not performed well in two relief appearances and three starts coming into Tuesday's outing, but he managed to shut down the Padres, claiming ownership of baseball's best offense. The right-hander held them to three hits (all singles) and two walks while striking out four. The sterling performance lowers his ERA to 6.84 and his WHIP to 1.67 with a 21/13 K/BB ratio in 26 1/3 innings. Vogelsong will look for a repeat performance in a home start against the Marlins next.
May 6 - 12:42 AM

Ryan Vogelsong was punted around for six runs over three innings in a 7-3 loss to the Dodgers on Wednesday.

It was ugly. On the bright side, as it were, it could have been uglier. Vogelsong gave up three homers in the first inning and another in the third. Fortunately for him, only one runner was on base total as the four balls sailed over the wall. We can't imagine Vogelsong is long for the Giants' rotation and you should expect an upcoming announcement which banishes him to the bullpen. Vogelsong, you'll recall, was booted from the rotation after his first start of the season. Injuries to Matt Cain and Jake Peavy gave him another shot, but Giants manager Bruce Bochy can only tolerate rolling out a pitching machine for so long. Vogelsong is now 0-2 with a 9.31 ERA and 2.02 WHIP.
Apr 30 - 1:24 AM

Ryan Vogelsong did not factor into the decision on Thursday, allowing two runs in six innings as the Giants walked off 3-2 winners in 10 innings.

Vogelsong, returning to the rotation, allowed the two runs on two solo home runs: one to Alex Guerrero in the second inning and the other to Adrian Gonzalez in the third. Overall, he yielded three hits and one walk while striking out five. Manager Bruce Bochy announced after the game that Vogelsong will remain in the rotation, so he's in line to face the Dodgers again next week in Los Angeles.
Apr 23 - 7:40 PM

Giants manager Bruce Bochy announced Thursday that Ryan Vogelsong will remain in the team's rotation for the time being.

Vogelsong filled in admirably when called upon against the Dodgers on Thursday and will continue to get the ball every fifth day while Matt Cain and Jake Peavy each remain on the shelf. He's worth a look as a spot play in deeper mixed leagues.
Apr 23 - 7:29 PM

Ryan Vogelsong will start for the Giants against the Dodgers on Thursday.

Vogelsong was removed from the Giants rotation after his first start of the season, but he'll get another shot against a division rival. The 37-year-old has a 10.45 ERA through 10 1/3 innings, including 5 2/3 innings of relief.
Apr 22 - 7:57 PM

Ryan Vogelsong allowed seven runs over 4 2/3 innings en route to a loss against the Diamondbacks on Tuesday.

Pitching in place of the injured Matt Cain, Vogelsong hurt himself first by allowing base runners, then by allowing home runs with runners on base. Both David Peralta and Jake Lamb hit three-run homers, helping to end the right-hander's night earlier than expected. Overall, Vogelsong allowed six hits and walked four while striking out five. As long as Cain is out, Vogelsong will continue to get starts. He's on schedule to face the Padres on the road next.
Apr 8 - 1:02 AM

Ryan Vogelsong held the Brewers scoreless over 4 2/3 innings on Thursday.

Vogelsong needed the outing badly as he'd been having a tough spring leading into the start. He gave up only two hits and two walks while striking out four. Vogelsong figures to pitch out of the bullpen to start the season and will provide rotation depth for the Giants throughout the year.
Mar 19 - 7:33 PM

Ryan Vogelsong allowed three runs -- two earned -- over 2 2/3 innings against the Diamondbacks Saturday.

Vogelsong gave up four hits and a walk, striking out one in the outing. It was the continuation of a trend this spring for the right-hander, as he now owns a 9.39 ERA in 7 2/3 innings. Vogelsong is a veteran, though, so there is plenty of time for him to round into shape before the season starts.
Mar 15 - 12:17 AM

Ryan Vogelsong had a rough go of things Thursday against the Giants, yielding four runs in two innings of work.

Vogelsong was four runs in debt in a flash, as he allowed back-to-back singles to lead off the second inning before walking Kris Bryant to load the bases. Kyle Schwarber unloaded them with a grand slam to right field. Vogelsong, 37, will likely serve as a swingman for the Giants. He finished with a 4.00 ERA and a 151/58 K/BB ratio in 184 2/3 innings last season.
Mar 5 - 6:23 PM

Giants re-signed RHP Ryan Vogelsong to a one-year, $4 million contract.

He'll have the chance to earn more through incentives. Vogelsong chose the Giants over the Astros even though he'll likely enter the season as a long reliever if Matt Cain (elbow) and Tim Hudson (ankle) progress as hoped. The 37-year-old held a 4.00 ERA and 1.28 WHIP in 32 starts with the defending champs last year.
