Ryan Vogelsong (eye) threw off the slope of a mound Wednesday and felt good.
Vogelsong needed surgery to repair multiple facial fractures after taking a Jordan Lyles pitch to the head on May 23. He's hoping to rejoin the Pirates in about a month, once he regains enough arm strength. "Remarkable recovery," trainer Todd Tomczyk said Thursday. "His vision is 20/20. … No reservations, no issues with the visual field, no issues with the peripheral field." Jun 23 - 11:29 AM

Pirates transferred RHP Ryan Vogelsong (eye) to the 60-day disabled list.

Vogelsong had surgery Thursday to repair multiple facial fractures. Obviously he won't be on the mound anytime soon. By moving Vogelsong to the 60-day DL, the Pirates were able to clear a roster spot for reliever Curtis Partch.
Jun 4 - 1:08 PM

Ryan Vogelsong had surgery on Thursday to repair multiple facial fractures.

He was placed on the disabled list last month after taking a Jordan Lyles fastball to the face. Vogelsong will be reevaluated next week. There's still no timetable for the right-hander's return.
Jun 2 - 5:02 PM

Pirates placed RHP Ryan Vogelsong on the 15-day disabled list with facial fractures.

The move comes after Vogelsong was hit in the head by a pitch during Monday's game against the Rockies. The specifics aren't yet known, but Pirates trainer Todd Tomczyk said that he suffered an injury to his left eye, including the orbital bone around it. There's no clear timetable for his return.
May 24 - 2:30 PM

Nicole Vogelsong wrote on Twitter late Monday that her husband, Ryan Vogelsong (eye), is "stable" and "will be ok."

Vogelsong was hit in the head by a pitch from Jordan Lyles during Monday's game against the Rockies. Pirates trainer Todd Tomczyk said after the game that the injury was to his left eye, including the orbital bone around it. The Pirates are expected to provide an update on his condition Tuesday.
May 23 - 11:01 PM

Pirates trainer Todd Tomczyk said that Ryan Vogelsong injured his left eye when he was hit by a pitch on Monday.

Vogelsong was carted off the field Monday after he took a pitch off the head in the second inning. He's at a local hospital now and more information should be available in the coming hours.
May 23 - 4:08 PM

Ryan Vogelsong left Monday's game on a cart after taking a pitch off his batting helmet.

Jordan Lyles' wild 92 mph delivery in the bottom of the second inning struck Vogelsong in the front of his helmet and knocked him to the ground. The veteran right-hander was eventually able to stand up on his own and he was sitting upright on the cart as it drove off, but this could very well be a concussion situation. There should be an update from Pittsburgh shortly. Vogelsong had thrown two scoreless innings in Monday's matinee makeup game against the Rockies.
May 23 - 1:25 PM

Ryan Vogelsong struck out five and walked no one in five one-run innings against the Tigers on Wednesday night, in what was his first start of the year.

The right-hander looked sharp in a spot start, pounding the strike zone and mixing his pitches. He allowed one run on four hits on Wednesday in a no-decision and could’ve gone deeper against the Tigers, but Vogelsong isn’t quite stretched out. Juan Nicasio out-pitched him in spring, sending the 38-year-old to the bullpen, and Nicasio will get an extended opportunity in the starting rotation. Even if Vogelsong sees a string of starts, though, we’re talking about a guy who hasn’t posted an ERA under 4.00 since the 2012 season. Even Ray Searage has limits.
Apr 14 - 12:17 AM

Ryan Vogelsong will make a spot start Wednesday at Detroit's Comerica Park.

Francisco Liriano had to be scratched with right hamstring discomfort. Vogelsong is a poor fantasy streaming option Wednesday against a powerful Tigers lineup. He'll presumably return to a long relief role this weekend.
Apr 12 - 5:36 PM

Ryan Vogelsong will be in the Pirates' bullpen.

He got beat out by Juan Nicasio for the final spot in the Bucs' season-opening starting rotation. Vogelsong is probably going to see some spot starts eventually, but it's doubtful he'll be worthy of consideration as a streamer in standard fantasy leagues. The veteran right-hander had a 4.67 ERA, 1.47 WHIP, and 108/58 K/BB ratio in 135 innings last season with the Giants.
Mar 30 - 4:25 PM

Ryan Vogelsong allowed one run over four innings Monday in the Pirates' 3-1 victory over the Red Sox.

Vogelsong struck out two and walked none. He's given up four runs in nine this spring. Expectations are that he'll have a rotation spot no matter how well or badly his Grapefruit League campaign goes.
Mar 14 - 4:56 PM

Ryan Vogelsong was perfect for two innings against the Blue Jays on Thursday.

Vogelsong had a 4.67 ERA for the Giants last year, but he is essentially guaranteed a spot in Pittsburgh's rotation. If Ray Searage can coax a fine season out of Vogelsong's 38-year-old right arm, then his status as baseball's best pitching coach will be certified beyond any doubt.
Mar 3 - 5:33 PM

Pirates signed RHP Ryan Vogelsong to a one-year contract.

He'll get $2 million guaranteed, with a possible $3 million more available in incentives. Vogelsong wasn't very good for the Giants last season with a 4.67 ERA and 1.47 WHIP over 135 innings, and he'll turn 39 just after the All-Star break. But, if any pitching coach can squeeze whatever he has left out of him, it's probably Ray Searage. Vogelsong, who previously pitched for the Pirates from 2001-2006, will open the season as the club's fifth starter.

Ryan Vogelsong was tagged for eight runs -- seven earned -- in three-plus innings by the Rockies on Thursday.

It should have happened prior to tonight, but maybe now the Giants will turn Vogelsong's rotation spot over to Tim Hudson. Vogelsong is 2-5 with a 6.84 ERA since the beginning of August.
