Ryan Vogelsong will have an exam on Tuesday in hopes that he'll be allowed to remove two of the five pins from his surgically-repaired right hand.
"Hopefully there's some pins coming out tomorrow," he said Monday. "That's the plan, but obviously I don't know for sure until I get some X-rays tomorrow and see how things are healing." If Vogelsong is able to get the pins removed, he'll begin additional mobility exercises. The Giants are hoping to get him back in late July. Jun 17 - 8:39 PM

Giants transferred RHP Ryan Vogelsong from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.

Vogelsong suffered a fractured right hand on May 20 when he was hit by a pitch while batting. The right-hander needed surgery and won't be recovered until late July.
Jun 8 - 5:46 PM

Giants placed RHP Ryan Vogelsong on the 15-day disabled list with a fractured right hand.

Vogelsong was hit by a pitch while swinging the bat in the fifth inning Tuesday and suffered fractures above and below the top knuckle in his pinkie. He's expected to undergo surgery Tuesday and will likely miss around six weeks. Chad Gaudin is the most likely replacement for the rotation, though the Giants could call up Michael Kickham from Triple-A.
May 21 - 1:04 PM

Ryan Vogelsong was diagnosed with a fractured right hand.

Brutal news for Vogelsong, who tossed five scoreless frames Monday against the Nationals before he was hit in the hand with a pitch while swinging the bat. Vogelsong's wife, Nicole, wrote on Twitter that he has a dislocated joint in the pinky finger of his throwing hand and it's broken above and below his finger. He'll have surgery Tuesday and is expected to miss around six weeks. The Giants don't have an obvious alternative in the minors, so Chad Gaudin is the likely replacement in the starting rotation.
May 21 - 12:48 AM

Ryan Vogelsong left Monday's start against the Nationals after getting hit on the right hand by a pitch while swinging.

Vogelsong swung at a pitch in on his hands, and the ball appeared to catch him on the right knuckles. It was poor timing, as the righty was in the middle of his best start of the season, allowing three hits and a walk over five scoreless frames. The Giants should have an update on his status soon.
May 21 - 12:03 AM

Ryan Vogelsong will make his next scheduled start on Monday against the Nationals.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy was considering replacing Vogelsong and his 8.06 ERA, but he'll give him at least one more shot. "This guy has done a lot," the skipper said. "He's earned some things, including a longer leash." The fact that the Giants' best option to replace Vogelsong is likely long reliever Chad Gaudin surely played into Bochy's decision. Vogelsong will obviously be a sketchy fantasy play Monday.
May 16 - 7:16 PM

Giants manager Bruce Bochy said Ryan Vogelsong is not guaranteed to take his scheduled turn in the rotation on Monday.

Vogelsong was a disaster again on Wednesday in Toronto, allowing eight runs -- three earned -- over just two innings. He sports an unsightly 8.06 ERA and 1.84 WHIP on the season, and this is the second occasion where Bochy has indicated that the righty could be bumped from the rotation. The Giants will make a decision in the next few days.
May 15 - 10:29 PM

Giants manager Bruce Bochy stated Friday that Ryan Vogelsong will make his next scheduled turn in the rotation.

On Thursday, Bochy had mentioned the possibility of using the off-day on Monday to skip Vogelsong, but has decided stay the course with his veteran right-hander. He's been nothing short of terrible through his first seven starts, compiling a 7.78 ERA and 1.73 WHIP. He's still generating plenty of strikeouts, but can't be trusted in fantasy leagues until he gets back on track.
May 10 - 7:44 PM

Giants manager Bruce Bochy indicated after Thursday's game that Ryan Vogelsong's next turn in the rotation could be skipped.

Vogelsong allowed six runs over 4 1/3 innings in a loss to the Braves Thursday and now has a 7.78 ERA for the season. The Giants have an off day Monday, so they could push the struggling righty's next turn back. "These are things we'll talk about internally," Bochy said. "I'm not ready to discuss that. He's healthy. We have different options. I'll leave it at that."
May 10 - 10:19 AM

Ryan Vogelsong was charged with six runs in 4 1/3 innings Thursday in a loss to the Braves.

Vogelsong needed 75 pitches to get 13 outs, as he gave up seven hits and three walks while striking out a season-high seven. He actually had the lead until the Braves scored four in the top of the fifth inning. The struggling right-hander has now failed to make it out of the fifth inning in back-to-back outings and has allowed home runs in seven straight starts. Meanwhile, his 7.78 ERA is the highest among qualified starters. He should be left inactive in fantasy leagues until he begins to turn things around.
May 10 - 1:43 AM

Ryan Vogelsong surrendered seven runs in 4 2/3 innings Saturday in a no-decision against the Dodgers.

Vogelsong has turned in just one quality start in six tries this season, and he still gave up three runs in that one. With 30 in 35 innings, his strikeout rate is fine. Unfortunately, he's already given up almost half as many homers (eight) as he did in 189 2/3 innings last year. He should bounce back, but he'll be a risky play against the Braves' power hitters next time out.
May 5 - 1:33 AM

Ryan Vogelsong allowed six runs on eight hits in five-plus innings Sunday in a loss to the Padres.

He walked three and struck out six. It could have been a lot worse, as Vogelsong gave up three home runs. He’ll take on the Dodgers this weekend.
Apr 28 - 8:50 PM

Ryan Vogelsong allowed a pair of homers but went seven solid innings Monday, giving up four runs in a 5-4 win over the Diamondbacks.

He gave up seven hits, walked a pair and struck out four. Vogelsong was on the hook to fall to 1-2 but was bailed out when Buster Posey launched a two-run homer in the eighth inning. The right-hander hasn’t been locked in yet in the early going, registering just one quality start in his first four tries. He’ll take on the Padres this weekend.
Apr 23 - 1:23 AM

Ryan Vogelsong allowed three runs in seven innings as the Giants lost to the Brewers on Wednesday.

After two disappointing outings, Vogelsong was improved on Wednesday. Unfortunately, improved wasn't enough to get the win. The right-hander did limit the Brewers to five hits, a promising sign after allowing 17 hits in his first 11 1/3 innings. His next start will come Monday against the Diamondbacks.
Apr 17 - 11:22 PM

Ryan Vogelsong allowed five runs (four earned) in six innings in Thursday's 7-6 win over the Cubs.

Vogelsong started out very shaky on a dreary afternoon in Chicago, giving up five runs over the first three innings, but he hung in there to retire the final 10 batters he faced and walk away the winning pitcher. According to Andrew Baggarly of CSNBayArea.com, it was the Giants' biggest comeback win since 2008. All told, Vogelsong allowed eight hits (including a home run) and one walk while notching five strikeouts. He'll attempt to improve his 7.15 ERA next week against the Brewers in Milwaukee.
