Rockies signed OF Alex Escobar to a minor league contract.
The Rockies also signed outfielder Bronson Sardinha and right-hander Chris Gissell. All receive invites to Spring Training. Escobar, a former top prospect of the Mets' organization hasn't appeared in the majors since 2006 as a member of the Nationals. He batted .257/.318/.387 with six home runs and 31 RBI in 230 at-bats for Triple-A Columbus (Nationals) in 2008, but was out of baseball last season. Sat, Feb 6, 2010 01:23:00 PM

Nationals released outfielder Alex Escobar.

Escobar had been playing at Triple-A, where he hit just .257/.318/.387 with six homers and 31 RBI in 67 games.

Nationals reassigned OF Alex Escobar and C Humberto Cota to minor league camp.

Escobar had the right to refuse the assignment and did so, making him a free agent. He probably had at least as good of a chance of returning to the majors with the Nationals as he would have anywhere else, and it's not like he should have expected the team to give him a spot now with him hitting .103 in 29 at-bats this spring.

Alex Escobar went 0-for-3 as a designated hitter before Friday night's game was called due to rain.

The door is open for Escobar with Wily Mo Pena likely to miss most or all of April, but he's not stepping up yet. He's 3-for-24 with one double to date.

Nationals re-signed outfielder Alex Escobar to a minor league contract.

The Nationals will have at least seven outfielders ahead of Escobar on the depth chart (besides the starters, there's Elijah Dukes, Willie Harris, Rob Mackowiak and Ryan Langerhans), so he probably would have been better off going elsewhere. Escobar missed 2007 with shoulder, ankle and foot injuries.

Nationals sent outfielder Alex Escobar outright to Triple-A Columbus.

Escobar missed the entire 2007 season due a variety of injuries. He is eligible to be a free agent and will likely sign a minor league contract with a team willing to gamble that he can get himself healthy in time for spring training.

Alex Escobar will have surgery on his foot and miss the rest of the season.

Escobar missed the first 2 1/2 months of the year while rehabbing his surgically repaired shoulder, went down in mid-June after spraining his ankle on his rehab assignment and then aggravated his shoulder in mid-July when he was supposed to be close to taking over as the Nationals' everyday left field. What the foot problem is, we're not sure, but it's barely worth noting. Escobar is highly unlikely to ever be healthy or productive enough to contribute as anything more than a fifth outfielder.

Alex Escobar (shoulder) continues to work on a throwing program at the Nationals spring training facility in Vero Beach, Florida.

Escobar was close to being activated from the disabled list two weeks ago, but suffered a setback. He is eligible to play in just five more rehab games before the Nats will have to activate him.

Alex Escobar, who will become the Nationals everyday left fielder when he comes off the disabled list, could rejoin the team this weekend.

The plan was initially for Escobar to be activated from the disabled list early next week, but they might bring him back a few days early. He is currently rehabbing with Triple-A Columbus.

The Nationals plan to make Alex Escobar their everyday left fielder, with Ryan Church moving to center, once he's ready to come off the DL.

We supposed he can't be any worse offensively than Nook Logan and Ryan Langerhans, but he's not likely to be a big upgrade either and putting Church in center will hurt the defense. Escobar is 5-for-34 with no homers and a 7/1 K/BB ratio in the minors as he rehabs an ankle injury.

Alex Escobar (ankle) is just 2-for-20 on his rehab assignment after going 0-for-4 for Double-A Harrisburg on Sunday.

The Nationals could give Escobar substantial time in center after the break if he can stay healthy for once, but there's not going to be any reason to activate him until he begins to hit.

Manager Manny Acta said that Alex Escobar played five problem-free innings Friday for Double-A Harrisburg and was scheduled to play seven innings Saturday.

Escobar has been on the disabled list all season as he recovers from right shoulder surgery. He's hoping to return shortly after the All-Star break.

Alex Escobar (sprained ankle) is expected to play in rehab games at Double-A Harrisburg this weekend.

If Escobar remains pain-free, he could be activated from the disabled list on July 13. There's a chance he'll see considerable time in center with no one else stepping up.

Alex Escobar ran the bases Tuesday to test the ankle he sprained in late June.

Escobar was relatively pain-free following the workout. He is expected to begin a minor league rehab assignment next week.

Alex Escobar, who was rehabbing his injured shoulder with Single-A Potomac, sprained his ankle.

Escobar will miss at least an additional two weeks after spraining his ankle. He will be doing well to return from the disabled list prior to the All-Star break.
