Jody Gerut officially announced his retirement at a press conference Sunday.
Gerut signed a minor league contract with the Mariners this winter, but he told reporters Sunday that he "lost his desire" for the game. The 33-year-old will finish up with a .262/.325/.433 career slash line and 472 career hits. He played six major league seasons. Sun, Feb 27, 2011 11:46:00 AM

Mariners signed OF Jody Gerut to a minor league contract.

The deal also carries an invitation to spring training, where Gerut will try to beat the odds and win a spot on the M's Opening Day roster. He batted just .197/.230/.336 in 71 at-bats for the Brewers last season.

Padres signed OF Jody Gerut to a minor league contract.

Gerut was released by the Brewers last week after spending a little more than two months on the disabled list with a heel injury. It's interesting that the Padres signed him on the very same day Tony Gwynn Jr. was placed on the disabled list. The pair were swapped for each other last May.

Brewers activated outfielder Jody Gerut from the 15-day disabled list and released him.

It's one thing to get released. It's another thing to get let go by a team that just a few days prior started an outfield of Joe Inglett, Lorenzo Cain and Alcides Escobar. Gerut was hitting .197/.230/.366 in 71 at-bats before going on the DL in late May with a heel injury. He turns 33 in September and he's had two bad years in a row, so he's in danger of falling out of the league.

Jody Gerut (heel) will begin a rehab assignment for the Brewers' rookie Arizona League club.

The outfielder has been out since May 23 due to a heel injury. While the team has not given a firm timetable for his return, it might still be a matter of weeks given the long layoff that he's had.

The Brewers informed Jody Gerut (heel) and Marco Estrada (shoulder) that they should go home to continue rehabilitation from their respective injuries.

"We feel we've done all we can for them here," said Brewers assistant general manager Gord Ash. "It's up to them now. Once they tell us they're ready to play, we can take action." Gerut has been on the disabled list since May 27 due to a bruised left heel and has only recently began taking batting practice. Estrada has been on the disabled list since June 1 with right shoulder fatigue.

Jody Gerut (heel) is still unable to run without discomfort.

Gerut has been taking batting practice for close to a week now, but he won't be cleared for a rehab assignment until he is able to run the bases freely. "It is getting better on its own time," the outfielder said this weekend. "Whatever time frames we had, clearly they were too aggressive. It gets better when it gets better." Look for him in late July.

Jody Gerut (heel) is taking batting practice, but there is still no timetable for his return.

According to Brewers manager Ken Macha, he is still wearing a boot on his foot during games. In other words, he's not all the way there yet. Gerut has been sidelined since May 22 due to a bruised left heel.

Jody Gerut took batting practice Friday for the first time since injuring his left heel last month.

"I'm finally making some improvements, I'd say I'm probably about halfway there," said Gerut, who has already missed a month. "It was nice to be back on the field again and break a sweat." There's no current timetable on his return, but he was buried on the Brewers' bench, anyway. He's not all that relevant in fantasy leagues.

Brewers placed OF Jody Gerut on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 23, with a bruised left heel.

Gerut hasn't played in a game since May 22 due to the heel injury. It's thought to be minor, so he should be ready when his 15 days are up.

Jody Gerut remains limited due to a bruised right heel.

Gerut hasn't played since Saturday because of the injury. "He's still moving a little bit slow, it looks like," said Brewers manager Ken Macha. The longer this goes on, the more likely Gerut goes on the disabled list. The Brewers are short on bench players right now, but he could get swapped out for Jim Edmonds once he's ready.

Jody Gerut rejoined the Brewers on Saturday after his wife gave birth to the couple's child.

He entered the game in the fifth inning and still managed to go 1-for-4 as the game went to 12 innings. Gerut is likely to be in the Brewers' starting lineup Sunday as Joe Inglett has a sprained ankle.

Jody Gerut has left the Brewers temporarily for the birth of his child.

The outfielder should only be absent from the Brewers' bench for a few days.

Jody Gerut starts in center field Sunday for the Brewers after hitting for the cycle Saturday night.

Jim Edmonds is out of the lineup Sunday, so Gerut moves to center with Corey Hart taking over in right field.

Jody Gerut hit for the cycle and tallied four total RBI in the Brewers' 17-3 win over the Diamondbacks on Saturday night.

Gerut probably shouldn't have been in the lineup because of his recent struggles against right-handed pitchers, but he took it to Arizona's Cesar Valdez right away. He registered a solo homer in the second inning, a single in the third, an RBI triple in the fourth and a two-run double in the ninth. Great stuff, but he's still just a backup outfielder and his value is limited.
