Jayson Stark of ESPN.com was told by two friends of Roy Oswalt that the veteran right-hander's preference is to play for the Rangers, Cardinals or Braves.
There's no indication that the Cardinals or Braves are interested, so Oswalt's best bet might be the Rangers, who placed Neftali Feliz (elbow) on the disabled list earlier this week. The 34-year-old right-hander has also been linked to the Phillies and Red Sox, but since both teams are up against the luxury tax, they are unlikely to give him the significant contract he's hoping for. Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com mentioned Thursday that the Orioles have Oswalt on their "radar," a report which has since been confirmed by Stark and Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com, but it's not known if the interest is mutual. According to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports, the Orioles have right-hander Roy Oswalt on their "radar."

Oswalt was hoping to sign with the Cardinals or Rangers, but neither team has expressed serious interest and we're now a quarter of the way through the 2012 season. So the free agent veteran is apparently beginning to consider other clubs. The Red Sox and Phillies are also thought to have some level of interest.

According to Buster Olney of ESPN.com, the "full expectation" among some rival executives is that Roy Oswalt will sign with the Rangers.

It's a logical fit now that Neftali Feliz (elbow) is on the disabled list, but Olney was told that Oswalt may be attracted to the Rangers because of his ties with Nolan Ryan and Greg Maddux and the team's proximity to his home in Mississippi. The Rangers reportedly watched Oswalt throw last week, as did the Red Sox and Cardinals, but they have yet to make a formal offer.

Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reports that the Red Sox have not discussed a contract with Roy Oswalt.

Oswalt is said to have worked out for the Red Sox recently, but there was apparently no discussion of a deal. The 34-year-old right-hander has begun to get tuned up and should be ready to sign somewhere soon. He posted a 3.69 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 93/33 K/BB ratio in 139 innings (23 starts) last season.
May 22 - 5:42 PM

Rangers general manager Jon Daniels wouldn't rule out a pursuit of Roy Oswalt following the injury to Neftali Feliz (elbow).

Feliz is likely out at least until the All-Star break, and it's possible he might not be ready to start when he does return. The Rangers will fill his spot with Scott Feldman for now, but they're not committed to him long-term. Oswalt threw for the Rangers last Friday and reportedly would like to sign on with someone soon.

FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal reports free agent Roy Oswalt worked out for the Rangers on Friday.

According to Rosenthal, the Rangers' stance is the same as it was during the offseason, and they don't appear to have any interest in Oswalt as a starter. The veteran right-hander recently auditioned for the Phillies and Red Sox, and will have at least one more meeting with another club. Oswalt, of course, is only expected to sign with a team he thinks has a chance to win the World Series.
May 19 - 11:39 AM

Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that Roy Oswalt could possibly sign somewhere within the next week and pitch for that team by mid- to late-June.

Rosenthal reported earlier Friday that Oswalt has already auditioned for the Phillies and Red Sox recently and has scheduled sessions with two other teams. The veteran right-hander will, not surprisingly, only sign for a team he thinks has a chance to win the World Series, though it sounds like he'll be open to pitching far away from his Mississippi home. Rosenthal says the Tigers and Yankees are not among the teams pursuing Oswalt.
May 18 - 1:12 PM

Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that Roy Oswalt threw a bullpen session for the Phillies last week and the Red Sox this week near his home in Mississippi.

Rosenthal also says he's scheduled to throw for two other teams, as well. One source told Rosenthal that Oswalt "appeared to be in good shape" but was "more in spring-training mode than mid-season form," which is not surprising. Assuming Vance Worley's elbow injury is indeed minor as the Phillies have said, it would appear that the Red Sox would be a better fit for the veteran right-hander. But, Oswalt might prefer the familiarity with the Phillies. Scott Miller of CBSSports.com says Oswalt will pitch only for a World Series contending club and wants to do so by June.
May 18 - 12:12 PM

Jon Morosi of FOXSports.com reports that while Roy Oswalt prefers to pitch close to his Mississippi home, he'll be more flexible once his kids are out of school for the summer.

Morosi also notes that Oswalt's priority is pitching for a winning club, which is no surprise. The veteran right-hander has reportedly been throwing bullpen sessions every other day in order to keep his arm in shape and figures to hook on with a contender around the All-Star break.
May 6 - 11:24 AM

Cardinals GM John Mozeliak disputed a report that the club has ''reached out'' to free agent Roy Oswalt.

Mozeliak insists the emergence of Lance Lynn as a starter has decreased the need to seek outside options, and that he is ''increasingly confident'' in what it sees from top prospect Shelby Miller. "I think when you look at our club and how things are going, there is no reason we're going to need to go outside (the organization) at this point. When you couple that with positives at Memphis, if we have emergencies, I think we can deal with it." The Rangers are Oswalt's other preferred team.
Apr 29 - 9:05 AM

Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that the Red Sox and Cardinals are "again reaching out" to free agent right-hander Roy Oswalt.

According to Rosenthal, Oswalt has been throwing bullpen sessions every other day in order to keep his arm in shape. He fully intends on pitching for someone this season, and it sounds like Boston and St. Louis are still interested in him. The Red Sox have an obvious need in their rotation, while the Cardinals could need him if they prefer to move Lance Lynn back to the bullpen.
Apr 22 - 8:19 AM

Angels GM Jerry Dipoto told reporters Saturday that his club is not in pursuit of Roy Oswalt.

"I can't qualify for everything you hear," Dipoto said. "But I can say that we're quite happy with the way our starting pitchers have thrown this spring and the way they've developed." Garret Richards appears likely to open the season as the Angels' fifth starter, and Jerome Williams will be an option for that role as well once his hamstring strain heals.
Mar 24 - 10:52 PM

Jim Bowden of ESPN.com and MLB Network Radio reports the Angels are "suddenly" the front-runner for free agent Roy Oswalt.

The Red Sox ''remain in the picture,'' while the Rangers and Cardinals have faded as realistic destinations. Oswalt announced last month that he plans to stay in shape and return by midseason. He would presumably secure the final spot in the Angels' rotation in favor of Garrett Richards and Jerome Williams.
Mar 24 - 11:48 AM

Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com reports that Roy Oswalt still doesn't expect to pitch in the majors before June.

Oswalt's agent, Bob Garber, announced last month that the veteran right-hander plans to stay in shape for a return around mid-season. It's assumed that he would prefer to pitch for the Cardinals or Rangers in order to be closer to his Mississippi home, but one report recently indicated that he would be willing to pitch anywhere. It will be interesting to see if St. Louis steps up their pursuit if Chris Carpenter (neck) is sidelined for an extended period of time.
Mar 22 - 3:39 PM

According to Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com, Roy Oswalt is now telling teams that he is willing to pitch anywhere.

Oswalt previously preferred pitching closer to his home in Mississippi, but he's willing to expand his scope with a June-ish return in mind. His kids should be out of school around that time, so he will be able to take them with him wherever he goes. The veteran right-hander could be an appealing option for a contender, especially one who loses a starting pitcher due to injury.
