Former major leaguer Ryan Freel was suffering from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) when he committed suicide last year.
Freel committed suicide on Dec. 22, 2012 as a 36-year-old. CTE, an incurable disease, is often found in the brains of athletes that play contact sports. Freel, who played eight years in the bigs and retired in 2010, suffered nine or 10 concussions during his career, according to the report. Football players Dave Duerson, Junior Seau and Mike Webster, and hockey player Derek Boogaard have also been diagnosed with the disease. Former major leaguer Ryan Freel has died at the age of 36, with the cause of death ruled as a suicide.

Freel was drafted by the Blue Jays in the 10th round of the 1995 MLB Amateur Draft and broke into the big leagues with them in 2001. He's best remembered for the six seasons he spent with the Reds (from 2003-2008) in which he hit .272/.357/.377 with 114 RBI and 140 stolen bases. Since his retirement from professional baseball, Freel was part of an organization that helped in the development of youth baseball players.

Ryan Freel, who was playing with the Somerset Patriots of the independent Atlantic League, has decided to retire.

Freel, now 34, batted .193/.290/.216 in 103 plate appearances between the Orioles, Cubs and Royals last season, but is most known for his time spent with the Reds from 2003 to 2008. He amassed a .268/.354/.369 batting line in parts of eight major league seasons.

Ryan Freel has signed with the the Somerset Patriots of the independent Atlantic League, according to Ryan Dunleavy of the Courier News.

Freel, 34, failed to find any work with a major league organization over the winter. He batted just .193/.290/.216 in 103 plate appearances between the Orioles, Cubs and Royals last season. He was signed to a minor league contract by the Rangers last August, but released just three days later.

The Rockies have been linked recently to free agent outfielder Ryan Freel, according to MLB.com's Thomas Harding.

The Rox have a ton of quality outfield depth but handing a guy like Freel a non-roster invitation to Spring Training won't hurt anything. The 33-year-old played in four different organizations last season and hit just .193/.290/.216 with two doubles, no home runs and five RBI in 103 plate appearances.

Reed Johnson will be placed on the 15-day disabled list in a corresponding move. Freel has been out since May 28 with a strained left hamstring. He was hitting .417 (10-for-24) with four doubles in seven games at Triple-A Iowa and will help out at third base and in the outfield.
