Josh Towers has opted for free agency rather than accept an outright assignment to Triple-A Scanton/Wilkes-Barre.

Towers was signed by the Yankees in May, but only made two appearances with the big club in September. Signed for organizational depth, the 32-year-old right-hander was one of Scanton/Wilkes-Barre's best starters, posting a 2.74 ERA in 101 2/3 innings. He would have been arbitration-eligible.

Towers actually spent one day on the Yankees roster in July, but failed to make an appearance. The 32-year-old right-hander was 7-6 with a 2.74 ERA and 1.11 WHIP in 19 games (18 starts) with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He hasn't appeared in a major league game since 2007.

According to Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News, Josh Towers will be designated for assignment Sunday to clear room for Chad Gaudin.

A bit of musical chairs in New York. Towers spent just one day with the Yanks and did not make it onto the field. He was 4-6 with a 3.78 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 42/16 K/BB ratio in 16 games (14 starts) with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this season, so perhaps other teams will have interest.

Signed to a minor league contract in May, Towers was 4-6 with a 3.78 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 42/16 K/BB ratio in 16 games (14 starts) with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this season. Towers is 45-55 with a 4.96 ERA and 1.38 WHIP in 137 appearances in the majors (112 starts). He will work in middle relief for the Bombers.

Nationals signed RHP Josh Towers to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.

Towers failed to make the Rockies out of spring training last season and then went 6-7 with a 6.27 ERA for Triple-A Colorado Springs. He should only be a candidate for a spot in Washington's rotation if injuries strike.

Towers posted a 7.20 ERA in five appearances to lose out on a rotation spot to Mark Redman. Capellan missed most of spring with a sprained ankle.

Still better than what Mark Redman did. With Jason Hirsh likely DL bound, Towers is a good bet to win a rotation spot despite a 7.20 spring ERA.

Facing mostly backups, Josh Towers allowed four runs and eight hits in three innings Thursday against the Padres.

Towers was the third pitcher into the game and worked the sixth, seventh and eighth innings, giving up runs in each. He did pitch three scoreless innings last time out, but he shouldn't have a big margin for error as he attempts to win a rotation spot.

Josh Towers and Mark Redman both pitched three scoreless innings Sunday against the A's.

Redman against followed Towers in the game. In their first outings, Towers allowed one run in two innings, while Redman pitched two scoreless innings. Towers is the better bet of the two to beat out Franklin Morales and Kip Wells for a rotation spot, but he's not someone fantasy leaguers should concern themselves with.

The Denver Post reports that Josh Towers has "quietly been added" to the Rockies' 40-man roster.

The newspaper speculates that Towers' chances of claiming a spot on the pitching staff coming out of spring training have increased, but he's only guaranteed $400,000 if he doesn't crack the Opening Day roster.

The Rockies and Josh Towers have agreed to a one-year deal, according to the Denver Post.

Towers will earn $1.8 million if he makes the team or $400,000 if he's cut during spring training. A $3 million mutual option for 2008 is included.

The Rockies are close to signing free agent Josh Towers to a one-year contract that could pay him $1.8 million plus incentives, MLB.com reports.

More guaranteed money for mediocrity. At least they'd apparently only have to pay Towers $400,000 if he's cut in spring training under the terms of this deal. The $1.8 million figure would be guaranteed only if he begins the season on the 25-man roster. The Rockies should still be hoping Franklin Morales wins a rotation spot, but it's hard to see them putting Kip Wells in the pen and cutting Mark Redman and Towers unless the young left-hander is completely lights out in March.
