Nationals purchased the contract of C Jamie Burke from Triple-A Syracuse.

Burke has played just six games for Triple-A Syracuse this season, but the Nationals need some depth after Carlos Maldonado hit the disabled list. Ivan Rodriguez should be back by the end of next week, so it's unlikely that Burke will see much, if any, game action, but he'll be with the team just in case.

Nationals signed catcher Jamie Burke to a minor league contract.

Burke, 37, was acquired in mid September from the Mariners after the Nats lost Jesus Flores to season-ending shoulder surgery. Burke isn't great offensively or defensively, but he provides solid organizational depth as a veteran catcher.

Nationals acquired catcher Jamie Burke from the Mariners for cash considerations.

The Nats lost Jesus Flores to season-ending shoulder surgery on Wednesday and Wil Nieves was pulled from Thursday's game with a leg injury. Josh Bard, the only other available catcher on Washington's roster, is hobbled by a tight hamstring. Burke, 37, isn't great offensively or defensively, but the Nationals are desperate for depth at the backstop position.

Jamie Burke cleared waivers and has been assigned to Triple-A Tacoma.

Burke was designated for assignment on June 26 for the second time this season, and yet again received no interest on the waiver wire. The 37-year-old backstop has hit just .122/.163/.195 with a home run and one RBI in 41 at-bats for the M's this year. They just can't seem to get rid of him.

Mariners designated catcher Jamie Burke for assignment.

It's the second time Burke has been DFA'd by the Mariners this season, and we're expecting him to land back at Triple-A Tacoma just like last time. The 37-year-old backstop has hit just .122/.163/.195 with a home run and one RBI in 41 at-bats with the M's this season.

Mariners purchased the contract of catcher Jamie Burke from Triple-A Tacoma.

Rob Johnson is day-to-day with a foot injury, so the Mariners wanted an extra catcher to help out Guillermo Quiroz. Burke was 1-for-13 for the Mariners earlier this season.

Mariners designated C Jamie Burke for assignment.

The team now has 10 days to trade, release or outright Burke to the minors. He must clear waivers in order to be sent to the minors.

The Mariners recalled Jamie Burke from Triple-A Tacoma Thursday.

He was recalled after Seattle placed Kenji Johjima on the 15-day disabled list. He is slated to backup Rob Johnson for the next few weeks.

Mariners re-signed catcher Jamie Burke to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.

If the Mariners want to give Jeff Clement time at DH, then Jamie Burke will make the team as a third catcher. Ideally, the Mariners would just let Clement catch and use Kenji Johjima as the true backup he now appears to be. That scenario would seem to leave no room for Burke on the bench.

The Seattle Times reports that the Mariners have re-signed Jamie Burke to a minor league deal.

Burke was non-tendered after hitting .261/.303/.326 in 92 at-bats last season. If the Mariners opt to go with a third catcher, Burke would make more sense than Rob Johnson, who would be better off playing regularly in Triple-A.

Mariners non-tendered catcher Jamie Burke.

Erik Bedard was offered a contract. Burke goes after hitting .261/.303/.326 in 92 at-bats last season. The Mariners figure to pair Jeff Clement and Kenji Johjima behind the plate next season, and they do have Rob Johnson ready if they decide Clement needs some additional Triple-A time.

Manager John McLaren indicated Wednesday that Jamie Burke may become Erik Bedard's personal catcher.

Burke was behind the plate for a third straight Bedard start Wednesday. "They seem to work pretty well together," McLaren said. "It's something that we might do until [Kenji Johjima] gets his offensive game together."

Jamie Burke finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI as the Mariners beat the Rays on Wednesday night.

Most of the damage came on a three-run homer, the second of Burke's career. The backup catcher also did a nice job tagging out Willie Aybar in a play at the plate. Still, Burke doesn't figure to see much playing time, even if Kenji Johjima is struggling at the plate.

The Mariners cut Rene Rivera on Wednesday, leaving Jamie Burke as the team's backup catcher.

Burke's a big upgrade on offense, but since he's a well below average defender, the Mariners still could go in a different direction. As often as Kenji Johjima plays, Burke wouldn't be a very good $1 pick even if the job is his.
