Johnny Estrada, who hasn't played since 2008, says he's been dealing with post-concussion syndome in recent years.
Estrada probably suffered several concussions over the course of his career, but the one that everyone remembers happened when Darin Erstad went out of his way to bowl him over at home plate in 2005. Just 34, Estrada would like to make a comeback, though it's unclear if he's going to aim to sign a minor league deal this winter. Sat, Dec 11, 2010 05:41:00 PM

Nationals designated catcher Johnny Estrada for assignment.

Sadly, the Nats are finished carrying four catchers. This shouldn't have any effect on their attempts to trade Paul Lo Duca. Estrada was 9-for-53 with no extra-base hits and one walk this season. He's probably looking forward to the chance of getting a fresh start elsewhere.

Johnny Estrada made a second straight start behind the plate Saturday after coming off the DL on Friday and went 1-for-4 against the Braves.

Showcasing Paul Lo Duca hasn't really worked, but the Nationals will try the same thing with Estrada anyway. Hopefully, Jesus Flores is the starting catcher for the final two months regardless of what happens over the next 12 days.

Nationals reinstated C Johnny Estrada from the 15-day disabled list.

That's four catchers and counting for Washington, who has Paul Lo Duca seeing time in the outfield. Estrada will see occasional work off the bench and in pinch-hitting situations.

Nationals placed catcher Johnny Estrada on the 15-day disabled list with ulnar neuritis in his right elbow.

Bad timing for Estrada, who would have been in line to start for the next 4-6 weeks with Paul Lo Duca being sidelined. He was hitting just .179 in a part-time role after beginning the season late following elbow surgery.

The Nats will put both Johnny Estrada and Paul Lo Duca on the disabled list prior to Friday's game.

Estrada's elbow is still bothering him, and he's giving up on battling through it for now. As a result, it's now a definite that Jesus Flores will be called up. He'll get most of the playing time over Wil Nieves for as long as he's around. Also, Elijah Dukes will come off the disabled list and likely cut into Wily Mo Pena's playing time just as Pena is warming up.

Nationals activated catcher Johnny Estrada from the disabled list.

The Nats will carry three catchers for now, but Jesus Flores should go soon, leaving Estrada as the lone backup to Paul Lo Duca.

Nationals placed catcher Johnny Estrada on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to March 21, following right elbow surgery.

Jesus Flores will play behind Paul Lo Duca until Estrada returns in mid-April.

Johnny Estrada (elbow) played in a minor league game on Tuesday.

Estrada had a pair of hits, but the Nationals still expect him to start the season on the disabled list. He'll likely return about two weeks into the season.

Johnny Estrada is expected to play in his first minor league game Tuesday.

Estrada hasn't played in a game this spring because of a sore right elbow. The Nationals will probably place him on the DL before the start of the season.

Nationals manager Manny Acta said Friday that Johnny Estrada will not start the season on time because of a sore right elbow.

"We don't see Johnny making the Opening Day roster -- no way," Acta said. Estrada has been dealing with this elbow all spring and has not played in a game. Wil Nieves will take over backup catching duties until Estrada is ready to go.

Nationals manager Manny Acta said Saturday that Johnny Estrada is likely to start the season on the DL because of his sore right elbow.

Estrada disagreed. He said he is feeling better and is nearly ready to start taking part in baseball activities. Estrada threw from 120 feet without any discomfort on Saturday and is looking to play in a minor league game next week. Acta is probably being a bit more realistic than Estrada in this situation.

Johnny Estrada's elbow is responding positively to a cortisone shot received last week.

"I got the cortisone shot a few days ago and it knocked out the inflammation in my joint. I don't have any more shooting pain," Estrada said. He threw from 60 feet without pain on Monday, which is a big improvement from last week, when he couldn't do "anything." He's questionable for Opening Day.

Johnny Estrada said his right elbow is not improving and expects to receive a cortisone shot sometime this week.

"I haven't been able to do anything," Estrada said. "I feel [horrible] right now. I haven't been able to hit and throw." He has been unavailable for about a week because of elbow soreness. If Estrada can't get ready for Opening Day, the Nationals' backup catcher situation will be left up to either Chad Moeller or Wil Nieves. Manager Manny Acta stated Thursday that catching prospect Jesus Flores will absolutely not act as the Nationals' backup catcher this season. Acta does not want Flores to miss out on any of the at-bats that the 23-year-old could get easily in the minors.

Johnny Estrada has been shut down for a few days because of soreness in the elbow he had operated on after last season.

"I'm not too worried - yet," he said. Estrada also had knee surgery, but he hasn't had further problems there. If the elbow is going to put him on the DL to start the year, Jesus Flores will make the team.
