Williams has already declined the assignment, and Newhan is expected to do the same. Williams gave up 11 earned runs in 4 2/3 innings for the Mets last season.

Williams allowed 10 hits and eight runs in 3 1/3 innings against the Astros last week in his only start this season. Williams said he expects to accept a minor-league invitation from the Mets if he clears waivers.

The Mets are expected to activate Dave Williams (herniated disc) from the disabled list to start Sunday's game against Houston.

Williams gave up two runs on just three hits during his last rehab start Monday with Triple-A New Orleans. He will take the spot in the rotation that was vacated when Jason Vargas was returned to the minors. Ruben Gotay or Sandy Alomar Jr. will be optioned to New Orleans when Williams is activated.

This was the third minor league rehab appearance for Williams. The Mets will need to find a place for him on their roster by July 22 when his rehab assignment expires.

This was the second minor league rehab start for Williams. He can stay on rehab until July 21, but the Mets will likely bring him up as soon as they need an additional arm.

Williams underwent surgery last week to repair a herniated disc in his neck. If he's three months away from pitching in games, then there's a good chance he won't see action in the majors before June.
