Brian Roberts announced his retirement from professional baseball on Friday.
A first round pick of the Orioles in 1999, the 37-year-old spent all but the final season of his 14-year big league career in Baltimore. The two-time All-Star finishes with a career slash of .276/.347/.409 with 97 homers, 542 RBI and 285 stolen bases. His last few years were marred by injuries, as he averaged just 57 games per season over his final five years. Fri, Oct 17, 2014 08:53:00 PM

Yankees released INF Brian Roberts.

The veteran infielder was designated for assignment at the end of July and has now been given his unconditional release. He's free to latch on with any club if he can find another opportunity, but his days of being fantasy relevant are long gone.

Yankees designated 2B Brian Roberts for assignment.

Roberts managed to stay healthy this season, but he hit just .237/.300/.360 over 91 games and the Yankees decided to upgrade at second base with Stephen Drew. The 36-year-old will clear waivers and try to catch on elsewhere for the remainder of the season.

Brian Roberts went 2-for-4 with three runs scored Saturday against the Reds.

Both hits were singles. Roberts came into Saturday's action with just two hits in 23 at-bats over his last six games. The 36-year-old has managed to remain healthy this season and plays half of his games in one of the most hitter-friendly ballparks in the majors, but he's not doing much with the opportunity. He's batting just .241/.305/.372 over 84 games.

Brian Roberts belted a solo homer, his fifth of the season, in a losing effort against the Orioles on Friday.

The second inning blast off Miguel Gonzalez was of the solo variety and gave the Yankees an early 1-0 lead. He has managed to stay relatively healthy this season, hitting .246/.313/.384 with five homers and 20 RBI in his 276 at-bats.

Brian Roberts went 4-for-5 with three doubles and two runs scored as the Yankees' No. 2 hitter in Friday's 6-5 win over the Twins.

It was Roberts' fourth career three-double game and first since 2009. He was hitting second in Derek Jeter's place for just the fourth time this year. He'll likely head back down to the seventh or eighth spot tomorrow when Jeter rejoins the lineup.

Brian Roberts went 2-for-5 and hit a game-tying homer in the bottom of the ninth Monday versus the Rays.

Roberts' homer off Joel Peralta sent the game into extra innings. It was a rather rare offensive highlight for Roberts recently. He ended up hitting .215 with two homers and six RBI in 79 at-bats during June.

Brian Roberts went 2-for-4 with a double and a two-run home run in Tuesday's loss to the Blue Jays.

Roberts homered in the seventh inning, cutting the Blue Jays' lead to 6-3. The Yankees would eventually tie the game later in the inning. Now with three homers and 16 RBI, Roberts is slashing .244/.324/.359 along with seven stolen bases on the year.

Brian Roberts collected his 1500th career hit when he singled in the second inning against the Orioles.

Fittingly, Roberts achieved this milestone against his former ballclub. He's the 600th player to reach the 1500 mark. After the hit, he promptly stole second. Age and injuries have eaten away at Roberts' productivity (.234/.320/.333), but he was a rock solid second baseman for Baltimore in the mid-2000's and it's a nice career marker.

Brian Roberts went 1-for-3 with an RBI single and a walk Friday night against the Royals.

It was his first RBI since May 26. Roberts has stayed healthy for the most part this season, but he has done next to nothing at the plate, putting up a modest .236/.309/.345 batting line over 53 games.

Brian Roberts went 2-for-5 and had the go-ahead RBI single in the 12th inning of Monday's win over the Cardinals.

Roberts was the only Yankee to have two hits on the day, as the Bombers managed to pull out the victory even though they failed to have a single extra-base knock over 12 frames. The Yankees second baseman is sporting a .241/.311/.359 batting line this season.

Brian Roberts (knee) went 1-for-2 with a homer and two runs scored in Sunday's defeat of the White Sox.

Roberts missed Saturday's game after fouling a ball off his right knee on Friday night. X-rays came back negative and he should be fully active all this week. The veteran second baseman is hitting .236/.308/.357 with two homers and 10 RBI in 42 games this season.

Brian Roberts had X-rays on his right knee following Friday's game, but they came back negative.

Roberts fouled a ball off the knee during the contest, and while he stayed in initially, he did depart prior to the bottom of the ninth. Consider him day-to-day.

Brian Roberts played hero for the Yankees Tuesday, taking Ernesto Frieri deep for the game-winning home run in a 4-3 victory against the Angels.

He finished 2-for-4 with two RBI. Roberts had a horrific start to the season, batting .213 with a .590 OPS as recently as the start of play on Friday. Since then, he's hit safely in four consecutive games, going 7-for-17 (.412). Roberts may just become AL-only relevant, after all. He's got the average up to .250 and the OPS up to .664.

Brian Roberts went 1-for-4 with a single and a strikeout in Friday's blowout loss to the Angels.

Roberts has hit safely in four straight games (three of them multi-hit games), but he's still batting just .222/.315/.270 on the year. The oft-injured second baseman has just two extra-base hits so far. It's a great situation to play half of your games in Yankee Stadium, but he hasn't done anything to show that he'll take advantage of it.
