Astros sent infielder Jason Smith outright to Triple-A Round Rock.
Smith, amazingly, has zero hits in 25 at-bats during his two stints with the Astros this season. Surely they can do better the next time they need a utility infielder. Tue, May 26, 2009 09:24:00 PM

Astros designated infielder Jason Smith for assignment.

Smith was designated for assignment in early May, but he cleared waivers and the Astros decided to give him another shot just a few days later. It still hasn't worked out. He's hitless in 25 at-bats this season and is likely to land at Triple-A Round Rock yet again.

Astros purchased the contract of infielder Jason Smith from Triple-A Round Rock.

Smith is back just four days after being designated for assignment. The Astros thought he was needed again because of Lance Berkman's wrist problem.

Astros designated infielder Jason Smith for assignment.

Smith was 0-for-21 with eight strikeouts as a pinch-hitter for the Astros this season. It really doesn't get much worse. The 31-year-old has a career line of .213/.249/.364 and is unlikely to garner interest from other clubs.

Royals non-tendered infielder Jason Smith.

Smith was designated for assignment earlier in the day. The 31-year-old went 6-for-28 for the Royals last season. He's a career .221/.259/.378 hitter in 551 at-bats.

Royals designated infielder Jason Smith for assignment.

Likely just the first of two Jason Smith transactions today. He was set to be non-tendered, but the Royals needed his 40-man roster spot a few hours earlier to make room for the Horacio Ramirez signing. Smith will still likely be non-tendered toniight.

Royals purchased the contract of infielder Jason Smith from Triple-A Omaha.

The 31-year-old is a career .222/.261/.382 hitter in 523 at-bats. The Royals will use him as a utilityman while Mark Grudzielanek is out.

Royals sent infielder Jason Smith outright to Triple-A Omaha.

No team claimed him off waivers. Smith will probably accept the assignment in order to collect on the one-year contract he agreed to last month.

Royals designated infielder Jason Smith for assignment.

The move makes room for Miguel Olivo. We thought there was a good chance Smith would be non-tendered last month, but he was retained then and signed to a one-year deal on Dec. 12. Of course, that was before the Royals picked up Alberto Callaspo. If Smith clears waivers, he'll probably opt to stick around and battle for a job. He might be picked up by a team looking for a reserve shortstop with pop. Not that he'd fill Miguel Tejada's shoes, but he'd be a better option than anyone the Orioles currently have.

Royals agreed to terms with infielder Jason Smith on a one-year contract.

Smith hit .188 for the Royals last season, though he did deliver six homers in 88 at-bats. The 30-year-old is a career .222/.261/.382 hitter in 523 at-bats. He'll probably be paired with Esteban German as the Royals' backup infielders next season.

Jason Smith hit a pair of two-run homers to lead the Royals to an 8-3 win over the A's on Saturday.

Smith was making his first start at second base and seventh overall since joining the Royals on July 11. He has legitimate 20-homer power, which isn't all that common among middle infielders. However, given a full season's worth of at-bats, he's strike out 150 times and probably hit in the .220-.240 range. The Royals shouldn't be looking to expand his role any.

Royals claimed infielder Jason Smith off waivers from the Diamondbacks.

The Diamondbacks originally designated Smith for assignment on May 19, but the transaction was voided after he required an appendectomy. He's gone for real this time, and the Royals will make him their sixth infielder for now. With Tony Pena Jr. practically always in the lineup and Esteban German ahead of him at second and third, Smith doesn't figure to see much action.

Jason Smith has been sent to Triple-A Tucson to begin rehab after undergoing an emergency appendectomy on May 19.

Smith is expected to be released once he is healthy so we expect he won't rush through rehab.

Despite being designated for assignment by the Diamondbacks 10 days ago, Jason Smith isn't going anywhere.

He was designated May 19 when the club reinstated Alberto Callaspo (.212, 22-for-104) from the restricted list, but the paperwork was not sent to the NL office until Monday. On that day, Smith's appendix burst, and he needed an emergency appendectomy. Rules state that a player in such condition cannot be out-righted, traded or released.

Diamondbacks placed infielder Jason Smith on the 15-day disabled list because of a burst appendix

Smith was designated for assignment a week ago, but because he was ailing before the move, he goes back on the 40-man roster and will collect a major league salary while sidelined. He's expected to miss a couple of months.
