Brandon Lyon said Tuesday morning that he's not aiming to take Frank Francisco's closer job.
"I’m here to make everyone else better, and be consistent," said Lyon, who signed a one-year contract with the Mets last week. "That’s where I want to be in my career. … If I can make the team better and everyone else in the bullpen better, that’s what I’m going to do." Lyon is saying all the right things right now, but he might eventually find himself in the closer role if Francisco continues to struggle. Feb 12 - 10:05 AM

Mets signed RHP Brandon Lyon to a one-year contract.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reported Thursday that Lyon will earn between $750,000-900,000, with incentives that could bump the total to $2.4 million. It's a solid, low-risk move by the Mets, who could use some stability towards the back-end of their bullpen with the lack of confidence in Frank Francisco. Lyon registered a solid 3.10 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 63/20 K/BB ratio across 61 innings last season between the Astros and Blue Jays.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that Brandon Lyon will receive between $750,000-900,000 in base pay in his deal with the Mets.

It's an incentive-laden deal, as Lyon will have a chance to bump the total up to $2.4 million. Rosenthal says the two sides are "negotiating the final details" before the deal becomes official. Lyon registered a solid 3.10 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 63/20 K/BB ratio across 61 innings last season between the Astros and Blue Jays. He'll work as a setup man in New York.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the Mets have reached a one-year deal with reliever Brandon Lyon.

Lyon registered a solid 3.10 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 63/20 K/BB ratio across 61 innings last season between the Astros and Blue Jays. He will function initially as a setup man for the Mets but could eventually see save opportunities if Frank Francisco's struggles continue. No word yet on the financial terms of the agreement.
Feb 7 - 10:00 AM

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the Mets are closing in on a deal with free agent Brandon Lyon.

Lyon posted a 3.10 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 63/20 K/BB ratio in 61 innings for the Astros and Blue Jays in 2012. If signed, he'll be the third right-handed reliever the Mets have added this week after signing LaTroy Hawkins and Scott Atchison. Lyon is expected to be used in a setup role with the Mets, but has closing experience and will serve as insurance behind Frank Francisco.
Feb 3 - 4:24 PM

ESPN New York's Adam Rubin reports that free agent Brandon Lyon is currently talking to several teams, though no signing is imminent.

It had been reported a few weeks ago that Lyon was in deep discussions to join the Giants, but their interest seems to have cooled some. Lyon posted a solid 3.10 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 63/20 K/BB ratio in 61 innings for the Astros in Blue Jays in 2012, and is one of the top relievers remaining on the free agent market.
Feb 1 - 10:16 PM

CSNBayArea.com's Andrew Baggarly reports that the Giants are in "deep discussions" with Brandon Lyon.

Baggarly suspects that signing Lyon could be San Francisco's final offseason move -- meaning Brian Wilson will be headed elsewhere. Lyon, a 33-year-old free agent right-hander, posted a cool 3.10 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 63/20 K/BB ratio in 61 innings last season between the Astros and Blue Jays. He'd operate in middle relief for the defending World Series champs.
Jan 17 - 6:21 PM

Blue Jays acquired RHP Brandon Lyon from the Astros.

He's one of the big names in the 10-player deal. Lyon holds a 3.25 ERA and 35/11 K/BB ratio over 36 innings for the Astros this season and will help set up for Casey Janssen.

Astros GM Jeff Luhnow told MLB.com's Brian McTaggart that Brandon Lyon will be shopped this month.

So will closer Brett Myers, meaning ninth-inning duties could fall to someone like Wilton Lopez. The Astros are also preparing to shop left-handed starter Wandy Rodriguez. Houston should be one of the more active teams at the July 31 deadline.

Brandon Lyon has registered a 3.24 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 35/8 K/BB ratio through 33 1/3 innings this season.

Lyon seems likely to be handed ninth-inning duties in Houston if closer Brett Myers is dealt near the July 31 trade deadline. He'd hold considerable fantasy value.
Thu, Jul 12, 2012 10:40:00 AM

Brandon Lyon pitched a scoreless inning Friday, giving him a 3.00 ERA through six innings this spring.

It was anyone's guess how Lyon would come back from shoulder surgery, but the early returns have been encouraging. Unfortunately, he pretty much ceased being a fantasy sleeper when Brett Myers was shifted to the pen. He could always close if Myers is traded, but Myers' contract situation is going to make him tough to move.

Brandon Lyon has been demoted to a setup role.

Lyon looked like the favorite for save chances in Houston when spring training began, but the Astros announced recently that Brett Myers will be moved from the starting rotation to the ninth inning. The owner of a 4.22 career ERA, Lyon will carry no fantasy value as a setup guy.

Brandon Lyon (shoulder) said he'll have no limitations at the beginning of spring training.

"I’ve thrown a few times off the mound, which is kind of rare for me coming into spring training," he said. "I usually don’t throw too much, but I felt like I had to throw a couple of times and get on the mound and see where I’m at. I’m actually pretty happy where I’m at. I feel like I’m ahead of where I usually am right now." The Astros are having an open competition for their closer job, but Lyon has to enter camp as the favorite despite not appearing in a game since last June. He wouldn't be a great bet to pitch well and remain in the role, though.

Astros' general manager Jeff Luhnow said Wednesday that the team's closer spot is wide open.

As it should be. Brandon Lyon (shoulder) and David Carpenter are the leading candidates for the gig, but other relievers like Wilton Lopez could also be in the mix. Astros' manager Brad Mills will likely settle on a closer by the end of spring training, but we suspect this could be an area of flux during the season.

Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow is not yet ready to anoint Brandon Lyon as the team's closer next season.

"Lyon has experience and a lot of the closer role really is about having experience in those pressure situations,'' Luhnow said. ''No matter what, whether it's the ninth, eighth or seventh inning, he will play an important role because of his veteran presence." Lyon, who is owed $5.5 million in 2012, posted an ugly 11.48 ERA in 15 games this past season before undergoing surgery in June to repair a detached right biceps tendon and a torn labrum. Wilton Lopez, David Carpenter, Henry Sosa and Rule 5 pick Rhiner Cruz are also possibilities for the ninth-inning gig.
