Cubs signed C Yorvit Torrealba to a minor league contract.

Torrealba will report to the team's complex in Mesa, Arizona before presumably reporting to a minor league affiliate. The 35-year-old backstop will serve as organizational depth.

Yorvit Torrealba has opted out of his contract and is now a free agent, reports Chris Cotillo of MLBDailyDish.

The veteran catcher told the media Saturday that there was "zero chance" he'd accept an assignment to the minor leagues if he didn't make the Angels out of spring training, and he's stayed true to his word. Torrealba had essentially no chance to unseat Chris Iannetta or Hank Conger on the depth chart, so this move was inevitable, barring an injury. Torrealba hit .240/.295/.285 with no homers and 16 RBI in 61 games for the Rockies last year. Another minor league deal will be out there if he wants it.

Yorvit Torrealba said Saturday that there was "zero chance" he'd accept an assignment to the minor leagues if he doesn't make the Angels out of spring training.

With Chris Iannetta and Hank Conger likely ahead of him on the depth chart, it appears that Torrealba could be looking for new work soon. He has an opt-out clause in his deal on Sunday.

Angels signed C Yorvit Torrealba to a minor league deal.

The deal includes an invitation to big league spring training. The 35-year-old backstop is coming off a disappointing 2013 campaign where he hit .240/.295/.285 with no homers and 16 RBI in 61 games. He'll provide depth behind Chris Iannetta and Hank Conger in Anaheim.

Yorvit Torrealba underwent minor surgery on his right knee.

Torrealba, an impending free agent, had his medial meniscus repaired. The 35-year-old batted just .240 with zero homers and a .580 OPS over 196 plate appearances this season. He would like to return to the Rockies, but the team may just go with Jordan Pacheco as Wilin Rosario's backup.

Yorvit Torrealba will not return from the 7-day concussion disabled list when first eligible.

"I'm not sure he is quite ready to be activated (Monday)," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. "But I don't think it will be too much longer." Torrealba has been out with concussion-like symptoms since August 19. There has been a rash of catcher concussions this season.

Rockies placed C Yorvit Torrealba on the 7-day disabled list.

Torrealba left Sunday's game after he was hit in the mask by a foul tip. The Rockies have yet to make a roster move, but they'll presumably call up another catcher.

Yorvit Torrealba hit a walkoff RBI single in the Rockies' 6-5 win over the Braves on Wednesday.

Torrealba did it as a pinch-hitter, too, adding to the heroics. The Rockies trailed by two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning when Jonathan Herrera, Troy Tulowitzki and Dexter Fowler staged a comeback rally against Braves closer Craig Kimbrel. Torrealba then helped the Rockies break through three frames later.

The Rockies plan to continue using Yorvit Torrealba as Jorge De La Rosa's personal catcher.

The Rockies believe Torrealba provides a needed calming influence for the left-hander. It means that Wilin Rosario will have the day off on Sunday. "It seems to work, plus we have a day game after a night game, so we'll roll Yorvit out there," manager Walt Weiss said.

Rockies purchased the contract of C Yorvit Torrealba from Triple-A Colorado Springs.

As expected, Torrealba will serve as the primary backup behind Wilin Rosario. The 34-year-old veteran beat out Ramon Hernandez for the job by hitting a cool .500/.545/.700 with a homer and five RBI over 13 games in the spring. He could be worth a look in the deepest of NL-only leagues while playing half his games at Coors Field, but has little fantasy relevance outside of that.

Rockies signed C Yorvit Torrealba to a minor league contract.

He'll get a minor league invite. It's an odd landing spot for Torrealba, who gives the Rockies a third catcher along with Wilin Rosario and Ramon Hernandez. Torrealba could open the year on the Opening Day roster if Hernandez isn't recovered from hamstring surgery in time. The veteran backstop batted .227/.293/.330 with four home runs and a .623 OPS in 218 plate appearances last season between the Rangers, Blue Jays and Brewers.
