Orioles signed RHP Winston Abreu to a minor league contract.

There's no word on whether he'll receive an invite to spring training. Abreu hasn't appeared in the majors since 2009 but has pitched well at Triple-A the past two seasons, putting up a 3.66 ERA and 9.8 K/9 rate for Triple-A Las Vegas in the Blue Jays organization in 2011.

Abreu posted a 2.28 ERA and impressive 13.3 K/9 rate at Triple-A Durham in the Rays organization this past season. He's 33, though, and holds a 7.31 ERA over 44 1/3 big league innings.

Rays signed RHP Winston Abreu to a minor league contract.

The Rays have also inked RHP Joe Bateman, RHP Jeff Bennett, LHP Jason Cromer, RHP Richard de los Santos, LHP Carlos Hernandez, 1B Chris Richard and LHP R.J. Swindle to minor league deals. All contracts come with spring training invites. Abreu and Swindle have a chance to elbow their way into Tampa Bay's bullpen plans at some point, although the upside on both is limited. Abreu had a 10.50 ERA and a 2.33 WHIP in six innings between Tampa and Cleveland in 2009.

Rays signed RHP Winston Abreu to a minor league contract.

Abreu was designated for assignment by the Rays in late June and subsequently traded to the Indians for minor leaguer John Meloan. The 32-year-old has a 10.50 ERA and a 2.33 WHIP in six innings between Tampa and Cleveland this season.

Abreu was acquired from the Rays on July 2. He allowed six runs in just 2 1/3 innings with the Tribe, prompting them to designate him for assignment last week. He'll work on his craft with the Columbus Clippers.

More upheaval in the Indians' pen. The club just acquired Abreu from the Rays on July 2, but he was awful in three appearances, allowing six runs in just 2 1/3 innings (23.14 ERA). He's sure to catch on somewhere else.

Winston Abreu has been suspended for three games and manager Eric Wedge for one as a result of their actions in Saturday's game against the Mariners.

Both were ejected in the ninth inning after Abreu hit Jack Hannahan with a pitch. Abreu, who was also fined an undisclosed amount, has appealed his suspension while Wedge will serve his suspension on Monday.

The Rays designated Abreu for assignment on June 27. He made only two appearances for the team. Abreu, a non-roster invite to spring training, was 3-0 with 10 saves and a 1.41 ERA in 32 innings pitched for Triple-A Durham.

Abreu will take the roster spot of Jason Isringhausen, who suffered an elbow injury Saturday night. Abreu is 0-1 with a 6.81 ERA in 33 career major league games, but has gone 3-0 with a 1.41 ERA and 49/10 K/BB ratio in 32 Triple-A innings this season. He should do well in middle relief.

The 30-year-old Abreu had a 6.38 ERA in 24 innings for the Nats earlier this season. He'll pitch in middle relief.

Abreu, a veteran who had a 10.13 ERA in eight innings for the Orioles last season, allowed one run and struck out 29 in 18 innings for Columbus. He'll pitch in middle reliever, but he may be sent down as soon as Chad Cordero returns.
