Giants manager Bruce Bochy said Thursday that Joaquin Arias will receive the bulk of the playing time at second base while Marco Scutaro (back) is out.

It's not clear at this point how long Scutaro will be sidelined. Arias is a career .272/.302/.367 hitter who offers nothing in the way of power or speed, so he's a zero in fantasy leagues.

Giants and INF Joaquin Arias avoided arbitration by agreeing to a two-year, $2.6 million contract.

Arias was arbitration-eligible for the second time this winter, so he'll be a free agent at the end of the deal. The 29-year-old will continue to function as a utility infielder for San Francisco.

Joaquin Arias requested $1.5 million and was offered $1.1 million from the Giants when arbitration figures were exchanged on Friday.

With the two sides so close, it's likely they settle around $1.3 million. He'll continue to function in a utility role for the Giants in 2014.

Joaquin Arias hit his first homer Wednesday off the Red Sox's Felix Doubront in his 161st at-bat of the year.

Arias surprised some with his five homers in 319 at-bats last year, and he hasn't been able to maintain the pop. On the plus side, he is hitting a nifty .288, though it's come without any walks to speak of. He'll continue to start at third base when Pablo Sandoval can't.
