Brendan Donnelly told Doug Miller of MLB.com on Tuesday that he has decided to retire.
"I'm pretty grateful for the career I've had," said Donnelly. "I've done about everything in baseball that a player can do. I got to the big leagues, won World Series, made an All-Star team, and made a lot of friends along the way. Donnelly, 39, was released by the Pirates last July after posting a 5.58 ERA and 26/25 K/BB ratio over 30 2/3 innings and drew minimal interest over the winter. Brendan Donnelly (oblique) threw a 25-pitch bullpen session on Friday.

Donnelly is scheduled to throw another side session on Sunday followed by a simulated game in Philadelphia early next week. If all goes well, he should be activated by the start of the team's next homestand on Wednesday. Donnelly posted a 7.00 ERA and 2.00 WHIP over his first 11 appearances before going on the disabled list with a left oblique strain.

Donnelly is still at least a week from returning to big league action, and possibly two. He was placed on the disabled list last week -- retroactive to April 28 -- with a left oblique strain and left behind a 7.00 ERA and 2.00 WHIP. "It would be a stretch to get him back before the next homestand," Pirates manager John Russell said after Sunday's loss to the Cardinals.

The Pirates were hoping that Donnelly would be able to avoid the disabled list, but he hasn't pitched since April 27 and has shown little progress this week. The righty will leave behind a 7.00 ERA and 2.00 WHIP.

Brendan Donnelly is day-to-day with what he described as discomfort in his left side.

He's been sidelined since Tuesday, but the tight-lipped Bucs decided not to reveal the injury until Sunday. Donnelly doesn't think he will have to go on the disabled list. With the Pirates bullpen already employing eight pitchers, there shouldn't be a need for him to do so.

He's had durability issues in the past, though, and may struggle to stay healthy for the entire year.

According to Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com, right-hander Brendan Donnelly will make a $1.5 million base salary in his new one-year contract with the Pirates.

If that wasn't questionable enough, he could make up to $3 million with incentives. The 38-year-old Donnelly was very effective in 30 appearances with the Marlins last season, tallying a 1.78 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 25/9 K/BB ratio over 25 1/3 innings, but he hasn't pitched in more than 30 games since 2006.

According to Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Pirates have come to terms with free agent reliever Brendan Donnelly on a contract, pending a physical.

No terms of the contract are currently available. Donnelly, 38, posted a 1.78 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 25/9 K/BB ratio in 25 1/3 innings with Florida last season after joining the team on a minor league deal in July. The veteran right-hander has struggled to keep a job in the big leagues since undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2007.

Free agent reliever Brendan Donnelly is hoping he won't have to settle for another minor league contract this offseason.

Donnelly signed a minor league deal with the Rangers last spring and eventually wound up in south Florida. He went 3-0 with a 1.78 ERA, striking out 25 batters in 25 1/3 innings for the Marlins, but he's 38 years old and the current economic climate hasn't been too friendly to veterans. "I can't imagine having to take a Minor League deal this year," said the right-hander. "I think I've answered the questions that need to b answered on the field."

Donnelly has been sidelined since August 23 due to a strained right calf. A welcome return, the 38-year-old veteran right-hander has a 2.04 ERA and 1.25 WHIP in 21 appearances this season.
