Braves re-signed OF Joe Borchard, RHP Moises Hernandez, C J.C. Boscan, C Jose Camarena and OF Reid Gorecki to minor league contracts.
Borchard underwent Tommy John surgery after hitting .274/.346/.453 in 117 at-bats for Triple-A Richmond last season. He should be healthy for 2009, but he's not going to be a candidate to make the team out of spring training. Hernandez, Felix's older brother, missed all of last season and wasn't looking like a legitimate prospect before getting hurt. Mon, Nov 17, 2008 03:31:00 PM

Joe Borchard was told he'd likely need Tommy John surgery that would cost him the rest of the season.

Well, that rules him out as a candidate to replace Matt Diaz in Atlanta's outfield. Brandon Jones might be looking at a callup in the near future.

Joe Borchard tripled and doubled on Thursday, leaving him 9-for-24 with nine RBI this spring.

With Omar Infante set to start off on the DL, the Braves appear to have only two of their five bench spots set, with those going to Scott Thorman and Josh Anderson. Javy Lopez is the favorite to land the backup catcher's gig, and the Braves will need a pure backup infielder, whether it's Brent Lillibridge or Martin Prado. They could carry both infielders, but Borchard is making a definite case for a spot. If the Braves want to send down Brandon Jones and go with a couple of rather punchless regulars in Mark Kotsay and Matt Diaz, it would make sense to have one more power bat available off the bench.

Marlins sent outfielder Joe Borchard outright to Triple-A Albuquerque.

No one was interested in trying Borchard's power bat. It doesn't look like he'll ever be a useful reserve.

Marlins designated OF Joe Borchard for assignment.

A former first-round pick of the White Sox who received a massive bonus to pass up a potential football career, Borchard has been a huge bust as a pro. He batted just .196 in 179 at-bats this season, giving him a .205 batting average and 636 OPS in 301 career games.

Joe Borchard fanned all four times he was up in Sunday's loss to the Padres.

Borchard, who has been playing against right-handers with Jeremy Hermida sidelined, has struck out 36 times in 104 at-bats this season. With four homers and 13 RBI, he's been sort of helful in NL-only leagues. However, the Marlins should be looking forward to reducing his role.

Joe Borchard hit his first homer of the spring in the bottom of the ninth inning Thursday as the Marlins and Cardinals tied 4-4.

Borchard is batting .275/.377/.431 in 51 at-bats. He probably won't have any long-term value in NL-only leagues, but since he's going to start against right-handers, he will be worth using while Jeremy Hermida is sidelined next month.

Joe Borchard doubled, walked and scored twice Saturday against the Mets.

Borchard is batting .282/.383/.385, compared to .095/.191/.119 for Cody Ross. Unless Ross can really turn things around next week, it's Borchard who would likely get most of the at-bats filling in for Jeremy Hermida should a replacement be needed early in the season.

Joe Borchard went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer Saturday against the Phillies, but he gave the two runs back by misplaying a ball in the eighth inning.

Borchard got turned around on Jeff Conine's fly to deep right with the bases loaded in the eighth and the ball dropped in for a two-run double, getting Jose Garcia and Taylor Tankersley charged with earned runs they didn't deserve.

Joe Borchard had two hits and a home run on Wednesday to lead the Marlins.

Borchard now has nine homers and 26 RBI. He's still not hitting for average at .236, but he's playing pretty well this month as he tries to earn himself a 2007 job.

Joe Borchard went 2-for-4 with a three-run homer Monday in the Marlins' 8-5 defeat of the Diamondbacks.

Florida now has a winning record for the first time all year. Borchard's homer off Enrique Gonzalez was his first July 26. With Jeremy Hermida hurting, Borchard has started three of the last five games. He had previously started just three games in the first 30 days of August.

Joe Borchard, who entered in a 2-for-24 slump, hit a three-run homer off Greg Maddux on Wednesday.

Borchard is hitting .197 as a Marlin, but he does have three homers and 12 RBI in 66 at-bats. While he'll get fewer at-bats now that the Marlins have Jeremy Hermida back, manager Joe Girardi will keep mixing him in at all three outfield spots.

Joe Borchard went 2-for-5 with an RBI single and a three-run homer against the Braves tonight.

Borchard has started six straight games for the Marlins. He's 7-for-23 with three walks during that span. Borchard will continue to start in right field with Jeremy Hermida out of the lineup. He's making a case to take over in center after Hermida comes back.

Joe Borchard made his debut in a Marlins' uniform on Thursday and went 3-for-5 with an RBI as the team's right fielder and No. 6 hitter.

Reggie Abercrombie started in center field tonight, but it's expected that he and Borchard will share time in center most days. With Jeremy Hermida out and Joe Girardi seemingly down on Chris Aguila, both can play right now. Borchard may not help out in any category except himers, but he has some value in NL-only leagues.

Marlins claimed outfielder Joe Borchard off waivers from the Mariners.

Nothing to lose. Borchard isn't going to be a long-term option in center field for the Marlins, but he's an upgrade over Reggie Abercrombie and Eric Reed for now. We're guessing that Borchard and Abercrombie will share time, with Reed getting sent back to the minors when Jeremy Hermida comes off the DL. NL-only leaguers in need of power should look to add him.
