Red Sox released RHP Carlos Silva.
Silva signed a minor league deal this offseason that would have converted to a $1 million salary if he was added to the big league roster. The 32-year-old failed to make an appearance this spring due to a pre-existing injury. He hasn't pitched in the majors since 2010. Sat, Mar 17, 2012 02:32:00 PM

Rob Bradford of reports that the Red Sox were aware of a pre-existing condition with Carlos Silva's shoulder when they signed him to a minor league contract in January.

Silva underwent an MRI last year which showed a slight tear in his labrum. He was able to make it through his offseason rehab and throwing program without a hitch, but the issue cropped up again after he exerted himself during recent batting practice sessions. The 32-year-old is currently sidelined with shoulder inflammation and should be considered a long shot to contend for a rotation spot at this point.

Carlos Silva has been shut down indefinitely due to inflammation in his throwing shoulder.

Not that he had much of a chance to begin with, but Silva is now out of the running for the final spot in the Red Sox starting rotation and seems all but certain to debut this season in the minor leagues. The 32-year-old righty didn't make a single major league appearance last year.

Updating an earlier item, Carlos Silva has reported to Red Sox camp and Alfredo Aceves is expected to report later Sunday.

An earlier report suggested both pitchers would be late arrivals, but obviously that's not the case. They'll both be competing this spring for a spot in the Red Sox rotation.

Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine said Sunday that both Alfredo Aceves and Carlos Silva could be late arrivals to spring training.

Valentine joked that Silva, who lives in Minnesota, is "having a tough time getting out of the Midwest." Aceves is coming from his native Mexico. It's not a huge deal if they only miss a handful of days, but both pitchers are competing for a rotation spot, and they're not exactly giving new manager Valentine a good first impression.

Red Sox signed RHP Carlos Silva to a minor league contract.

Silva made only seven minor league appearances last season due to shoulder issues. If he can get his health back, he'll serve as organizational rotation depth for the Red Sox. But we would strongly bet against the former 14-game winner suddenly rebounding.

Yankees released RHP Carlos Silva.

Silva signed a minor league deal with the Yankees in early April after being released by the Cubs. The 32-year-old right-hander posted a cool 2.75 ERA and 28/6 K/BB ratio in seven minor league starts but began experiencing shoulder problems earlier this month.

Carlos Silva was placed on the disabled list with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre due to right shoulder tightness.

Silva was scratched from his scheduled start on Sunday. The veteran right-hander has a 3.44 ERA and 8/4 K/BB ratio over his first three starts at the Triple-A level.

The Yankees have promoted Carlos Silva to Double-A Trenton.

He's slated to make his first start there Saturday. Silva gave up two runs over three innings in his first start with High-A Tampa last week. The veteran right-hander is still in the process of increasing his workload, but he could eventually be an option for the major league rotation.

Carlos Silva gave up two runs over three innings in his first start with High-A Tampa on Wednesday.

Silva gave up three hits -- including a two-run homer by Cubs outfield prospect Jae-Hoon Ha -- while striking out four and walking one. He'll need a few more starts on the minor league level, but could eventually be a factor in the Yankees' starting rotation.

Carlos Silva is scheduled to make his first start with High-A Tampa on Wednesday.

Silva was cleared for the start after tossing three innings in extended spring training Saturday. The 32-year-old right-hander signed a minor league contract with the Yankees in early April after being released by the Cubs. He could eventually be a consideration for the rotation if Ivan Nova, Freddy Garcia or Bartolo Colon struggles.

Carlos Silva threw 40 pitches Tuesday during his second bullpen session at the Yankees' spring training complex in Tampa.

He could face live hitters early next week. Silva signed a minor league contract with the Yankees earlier this month and looks like a better alternative for the major league rotation than fellow veteran right-hander Kevin Millwood.

Yankees signed RHP Carlos Silva to a minor league contract.

The deal contains an opt-out clause, but it's not clear what the date is on it. The Yankees will be on the hook only for the league minimum if Silva makes it up to the majors, with the Cubs paying the rest of his $11.5 million salary. It's really not a bad gamble on the Yank' part, as Silva was quite effective for most of last season, and they could use some more starting depth with Phil Hughes dealing with velocity issues. He'll also be teamed up with former pitching coach Larry Rothschild. Silva will initially be assigned to extended spring training to get in shape before going to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

The Orioles have no interest in free agent Carlos Silva.

The O's are reportedly on the lookout for starting pitching depth, but Silva evidently isn't on their radar. FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reported Friday that the right-hander is weighing "several" offers and should choose a new team soon.

Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports free agent righty Carlos Silva is weighing "several" offers, and should choose a new team soon.

Rosenthal does not specify who any of the teams pursuing Silva are, but they sound willing to give him a major-league deal, paying him a prorated portion of the veteran's minimum on top of the roughly $11.5 million he is still owed by the Cubs. Whenever he signs, it will likely be best to keep him away from your fantasy team for some time.
