Tyler Yates (elbow) is expected to throw a supervised side session on Wednesday.

Yates hasn't experienced any setbacks with his rehab from Tommy John surgery, but pitching coach Ray Searage would rather have him work on the side on Wednesday than throw batting practice. If all goes according to plan, Yates will pitch one inning in Friday's exhibition game against the State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota. The 33-year-old right-hander was re-signed to a minor league deal in December and hopes to win a spot in the Bucs' bullpen.

Tyler Yates is fully recovered from Tommy John surgery and expects to have no limitations during spring training.

Yates hasn't pitched in a professional game since undergoing the procedure in July of 2009. The Pirates re-signed him to a minor league deal last month, so if healthy, he could contend for a spot in the bullpen during spring training.

Tyler Yates (elbow) threw a bullpen session Tuesday in Florida.

Yates is still in recovery mode from Tommy John surgery and might be a little behind the other Pirates pitchers when spring training opens next month. He was re-signed to a minor league contract this winter, though, and should make a few appearances in the big leagues during the 2011 season.

Yates had to be shut down this past season after experiencing complications with his surgically-repaired right elbow. It's not clear what the exact status of his elbow is at this point. He's an unlikely candidate to make the bullpen.

We haven't heard an official word from the team about the specific nature of the setback, but Yates was in the process of working his way back from Tommy John surgery last July. The 32-year-old right-hander posted a 7.50 ERA in 15 appearances with the Buccos last season, but he won't be a factor in the team's plans this season.

Tyler Yates, who was recently re-signed by the Pirates, was arrested on December 30 in his native Hawaii on a family abuse charge, but police have dropped both of the charges against him.

The Pirates released a statement on Sunday night, which described the incident as "stemming from a disagreement between [Yates'] parents at his home in Hawaii." The statement continued: "We were made aware of the incident and assured by Tyler that the charges were not justified. As anticipated, all charges against Tyler have since been dropped. The manner in which our players represent the Pirates organization on and off the field is something we take very seriously. We are completely satisfied with Tyler in this matter and respect his family's privacy." Yates, 32, posted a 7.50 ERA in 15 appearances with the Pirates last season before undergoing Tommy John surgery in July. He isn't expected to return until late this season.

He also received an invitation to spring training. Earlier this offseason, Yates opted for free agency rather than accepting an outright assignment to Triple-A Indianapolis. He decided to return to the organization, a sage decision in that it should improve his odds of eventually returning to a big league roster. The 32-year-old underwent Tommy John surgery in July, however, and probably won't be ready until late 2010. He has a 5.12 career ERA in 248 big league innings.

Yates opted for free agency just a few days ago in lieu of accepting an outright assignment to Triple-A Indianapolis. But the Bucs still believe he's a capable reliever. "We are in dialogue with Tyler in an attempt to keep him with the Pirates," GM Neal Huntington said Tuesday. The 32-year-old Yates underwent Tommy John surgery in July, however, and probably won't be ready until late 2010. He has a 5.12 career ERA in 248 big league innings.

After appearing in 147 games from 2007-2008, Yates was limited to just 16 games in 2009 before undergoing Tommy John surgery in July. He won't be ready to contribute again until late 2010.

Pirates transferred RHP Tyler Yates from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.

This procedural move doesn't affect Yates' outlook. The right-hander had Tommy John surgery last month and won't be ready to pitch in the majors until sometime in 2010.

Tyler Yates underwent Tommy John surgery on his right elbow Tuesday and will miss the remainder of the season.

Yates won't resume throwing for five or six months, and it's possible that the right-hander won't be ready for the beginning of the 2010 campaign. He had a 7.50 ERA in 12 innings for the Pirates this season.

Yates said he's hoping to return to the Pirates in two-to-three weeks, but we'll remain skeptical until he starts facing live hitters. He's currently rehabbing his injured right elbow at the Pirates' spring training facility in Bradenton, Florida and has been sidelined since May 16.

Tyler Yates has been sent to the Pirates' spring training facility as he continues rehabbing his injured right elbow.

Yates will rehab without throwing for two weeks in Bradenton, Florida. The Pirates' medical staff is still struggling to diagnose his injury. He's been sidelined since May 16 with what is being called "right elbow inflammation."

Tyler Yates returned to Pittsburgh Thursday to undergo further tests on his injured right elbow.

Yates felt discomfort in the middle of a simulated game Tuesday. "I was super sore," said the right-hander. He was aiming to return during the month of June, but there's no way to set a timetable at this point. "We thought he was making very good progress. You can't mess around with a pitcher's arm," said manager John Russell. "We've got to make sure we find out what's going on."
