Mike Maroth told Jon Paul Morosi of that he has decided to retire.
"I gave it everything I had," said Maroth. "I feel confident that I’m making the right decision. I’d love to keep playing, but I realize that I don’t have it in me. I have no regrets. I put forth all of the effort possible to continue to play, but I believe my body just can’t do it anymore." Maroth hasn't pitched in the major leagues since 2007 due to surgeries on his shoulder, knee and elbow. He'll call it a career with a 50-67 record and 5.05 ERA over 161 games (150 starts). The left-hander will always be remembered for his 2003 season when he became the first pitcher to lose 20 games in a season since Brian Kingman went 8-20 for the A's in 1980. Mike Maroth has elected to become a free agent.

Maroth looked strong in the Puerto Rican winter league last offseason and landed a minor league contract with the Twins. He never put it together on the farm, though, and will struggle to find a job this time around. Maroth, 33, is a former 14-game winner but has been plagued by injuries.

Twins signed LHP Mike Maroth to a minor league contract.

The Twins also re-signed first baseman Brock Peterson to a minor league contract. Both received invites to Spring Training. Maroth, 32, is a former 14-game winner, but he hasn't pitched in the major leagues since 2007 due to shoulder and knee surgeries. The Twins were impressed with his performance in Puerto Rican winter league, where he went 2-0 with a 2.57 ERA in 28 innings.

Blue Jays released LHP Mike Maroth and RHP Rick Bauer.

Both had already been reassigned to minor league camp. Maroth, who is making his way back from shoulder surgery, made just one official appearance in Jays camp, giving up five runs in 2 2/3 innings.

Mike Maroth surrendered five runs -- four earned -- and seven hits in 2 2/3 innings against the Tigers on Saturday.

Maroth was making his first official start of the spring, though he's been pitching in games since March 2. He's a big long shot to win a spot in the Toronto rotation, especially with Matt Clement pitching quite a bit better than he is.

Non-roster left-hander Mike Maroth yielded two runs in two innings Tuesday in his start against Canada.

Maroth was making his spring debut after being slowed by a sore knee. He allowed one hit, walked three and struck out three today. Maroth is a long shot to claim a spot in Toronto's rotation.

General manager J.P. Ricciardi said Thursday an MRI exam on Mike Maroth's injured knee revealed some structural damage.

"He's got something in there but he thinks he can try to pitch through it," Ricciardi said. "It might require surgery but basically it's his call." Maroth is a long shot to make the team as is, so he likely wants to avoid going under the knife.

According to the Detroit News, Mike Maroth and the Blue Jays have agreed to terms on a minor league contract.

Mike Maroth said Tuesday that he's planning to pitch in 2009.

Maroth underwent shoulder surgery in May after being released from Triple-A by the Royals and had a 6.89 ERA in 2007, but is still just 31 years old. "My arm feels really strong," Maroth said. "I've already seen signs of a difference in how free my arm feels when I throw a ball." He'll almost surely have to settle for a minor league deal somewhere.

Mike Maroth was credited with a win in relief after allowing a run in an inning in his spring debut Thursday against the Angels.

He did previously pitch in a 'B' game. Maroth won't have a chance of winning a rotation spot after missing the first couple of weeks of camp with a sore shoulder, but he could be in line to be one of the Royals' first callups once the season gets started.

Mike Maroth pitched in a "B" game on Sunday, and was throwing at around 85-86 mph.

That's a few miles per hour short of where Maroth normally works, but he's working his way back from a stiff shoulder. Maroth has agreed to starting the season in Triple-A Omaha if necessary, and that seems likely unless he proves healthy over the next three weeks. John Bale has pitched better than Jorge De La Rosa in the competition for the Royals' fifth starting spot.

Mike Maroth (shoulder) was limited to throwing batting practice instead of making his spring debut as scheduled Thursday.

"He hasn’t had a setback," manager Trey Hillman said. "We’re just being careful. We want to make sure that soreness has totally disappeared. He didn’t have a setback. He’s champing at the bit." Maroth will probably get into a game next week.

Mike Maroth is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Monday to test his sore left shoulder.

Maroth needs this bullpen session to go well. He is scheduled to make an appearance Thursday against the Diamondbacks. Missing the game Thursday could hurt his shot at grabbing a spot in the Royals' rotation.
