Yankees signed OF Marcus Thames to a minor-league contract.

A solid role player for the Yankees a year ago, Thames hit just .197 with two home runs and seven RBI in 66 at-bats while battling calf and quad injuries as a member of the Dodgers this season. The owner of a career .260 average and .824 OPS against lefties, Thames should likely be up in New York at some point this summer as long as he can round back to full health.

Dodgers released OF Marcus Thames.

Thames was designated for assignment last week and officially cleared release waivers on Monday. He has struggled with calf injuries this season, batting just .197/.243/.333 with two homers over 70 plate appearances. The 34-year-old can't do much in the field, but he's worth a shot as a righty bat off the bench or a part-time DH for an American League team.

Dodgers designated OF Marcus Thames for assignment.

The Dodgers signed Thames to a one-year, $1 million contract this offseason with the hope that he'd mash left-handed pitching. Instead he struggled mightily in 70 plate appearances, missing about a month with a quad strain, and posting a .197/.243/.333 slash line with two homers when healthy. Thames could still be salvaged, however. Between 2006-2010, as a member of the Tigers and Yankees, he had an .820 OPS and 94 homers in 1,547 plate appearances. A team in desperate need of outfield punch might give him a shot.

Thames hasn't played in the field since leaving a game on June 24 with a left calf strain. Don Mattingly said that Thames will also field some ground balls at first base, as the Dodgers are without a backup first baseman now that Casey Blake is on the disabled list.

Marcus Thames (calf) will likely avoid a stint on the disabled list.

An MRI on Thames' calf was negative. Dodgers manager Don Mattingly indicated that he wasn't sure he wanted to carry Thames on the roster if all he could do was DH and pinch-hit. Mattingly said he still isn't comfortable using Thames in the outfield, but it appears that he has decided to keep him on the active roster for now.

Dodgers manager Don Mattingly indicated that Marcus Thames (calf) might have to be placed on the disabled list.

An MRI on Thames' calf was negative, and he probably doesn't need a full 15 days off, but Mattingly isn't sure he wants to carry him on the roster if all he can do is DH and pinch-hit. Thames is only able to run at about 75 percent. "I just have to know if I can use him," Mattingly said. "At this point, I don't think there's any way he can play in the field." The Dodgers should make a decision on Thames soon.
