Indians signed RHP Kirk Saarloos to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.
Saarloos has little chance to win a spot on the pitching staff and particularly in the Indians' suddenly deep rotation, but could stick as a long reliever. Thu, Jan 15, 2009 09:20:00 AM

Athletics sent RHP Kirk Saarloos and infielder Donnie Murphy outright to Triple-A Sacramento.

Saarloos had a 5.67 ERA in 26 1/3 innings this season. He's still relatively young at age 29, but he's no longer the serviceable major league middle reliever he once was and it's probably time for him to start thinking about his next career.

Athletics purchased the contract of RHP Kirk Saarloos from Triple-A Sacramento.

Oakland's bullpen has been stretched of late, so they'll bring up Saarloos to eat some innings. He's allowed nine runs in his last 30 innings, and has apparently looked very good in the minors. Still, he's not a fantasy option in middle relief.

Kirk Saarloos accepted his assignment to Triple-A Sacramento.

He was DFA'd to make room for Rajai Davis.

Athletics purchased the contract of RHP Kirk Saarloos from Triple-A Sacramento.

He'll be available to eat innings until the A's get Justin Duchscherer or Rich Harden back, allowing them to return Lenny DiNardo to the pen.

Athletics reassigned RHP Kirk Saarloos and C Matthew LeCroy to minor league camp; optioned LHP Jerry Blevins and RHP Henry Rodriguez to Triple-A Sacramento.

Several youngsters have performed well this spring, so Saarloos, who was brought in as a fallback, wasn't needed. Blevins allowed two runs in six innings and is a definite candidate to spend considerable time with the A's this year. Rodriguez, one of the team's best young arms, allowed one run in five innings, though he walked five in the process.

According to the Contra Costa Times, the A's have agreed to terms with Kirk Saarloos on a minor league contract with an invite to spring training.

Saarloos pitched for the A's from 2004-2006, but then went 1-5 with a 7.17 ERA in 42 2/3 innings last season after being traded to the Reds. With the A's in rebuilding mode, there could be a place for Saarloos to stick around as an innings eater.

Reds sent RHP Kirk Saarloos, infielder Mark Bellhorn and outfielder Jason Ellison outright to Triple-A Louisville.

Bellhorn was going to be a free agent anyway. Saarloos made $1.2 million while amassing a 7.17 ERA in 42 2/3 innings this year, so it figured that the Reds would drop him before he could go to arbitration again. He was so awful this year that he might not have much of a chance when he is competing for a job elsewhere next spring.

The Reds will start Kirk Saarloos in place of Phil Dumatrait in Saturday's game.

Saarloos gets the nod despite possessing a 7.39 ERA in 35 1/3 innings.

Reds recalled RHP Kirk Saarloos from Triple-A Louisville.

Saarloos will probably do little but mop up this month. He'll probably be non-tendered in December after such a disastrous season in his return to the NL.

Saarloos was brought back to join the pen five days ago, but the Reds weren't interested in using him as a starter. He'll rejoin the team in September.
