Jack Magruder of FOX Sports Arizona reports that the Diamondbacks have re-signed catcher Wil Nieves to a one-year, $800,000 contract.

Nieves was recently non-tendered by the Diamondbacks, but both sides remained motivated to get a deal done. The 35-year-old backstop hit .301/.330/.410 with two homers and eight RBI over 83 at-bats between the Rockies and Diamondbacks this past season and will function as Miguel Montero's backup in 2013.

Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports that the Diamondbacks are set to sign the .226 career hitter. With Henry Blanco (hand) likely headed to the disabled list, Nieves would back up Miguel Montero.

With the rumors swirling around that Ramon Hernandez may soon be traded, Nieves would likely assume the backup catcher's role behind Wilin Rosario once he is healthy enough to return. He'll return to an uninspiring .221/.268/.289 line through his first 47 at-bats.

Nieves suffered the injury last week against the Nationals. Ramon Hernandez (hand) has been activated from the disabled list to take his place on the active roster.

No official word from the team yet, but this could be a sign that Ramon Hernandez is headed for the disabled list. The veteran backstop has been dealing with a nagging injury to his left hand for most of the season. Nieves would likely function as the primary backup to rookie Wilin Rosario if Hernandez indeed lands on the DL.

Braves acquired C Wil Nieves from the Brewers for cash considerations; assigned him to Triple-A Gwinnett.

Nieves will provide the Braves with organizational catching depth while Brian McCann recovers from his oblique strain. Nieves, who turns 34 in September, hit just .140 in 50 at-bats with the Brewers earlier this season before they outrighted him to Triple-A.

It's surprising he managed to stick around this long. Nieves was batting just .140 with two doubles over his first 50 at-bats with the Brewers. George Kottaras will take his place on the active roster.

Wil Nieves drew the Opening Day start at catcher over George Kotteras.

"It wasn't flipping a coin," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke assured. "Just watching (Nieves) in spring training, catching, and trying to figure out when I was going to catch George." The manager added that "how they do is going to dictate how much they play." Jonathan Lucroy (finger) isn't expected to be out long, and neither Nieves nor Kotteras is worth a short-term play while they're in a timeshare.
