Wil Nieves hit a grand slam in Sunday's win over the Giants.
Nieves was in Triple-A El Paso just a week ago. The Padres called him up to serve as a backup to starter Derek Norris. He made the most of a rare start, smashing a fourth inning grand slam off of Jake Peavy. It would be his only hit of the game, as he finished 1-for-4. This was just Nieves' 10th career home run. He's not fantasy relevant. Apr 12 - 9:21 PM

Padres purchased the contract of C Wil Nieves from Triple-A El Paso.

The veteran backstop will serve as the primary backup to Derek Norris and make $850,000 for his troubles. He won't hold any fantasy value unless an injury were to strike Norris during the season.

Wil Nieves will receive an $850,000 base salary if he makes the Padres.

Nieves signed a minor league deal with the Padres on Monday and will receive an invitation to spring training. The 37-year-old has a decent chance to beat out Tim Federowicz for the backup catcher job.

Padres signed C Wil Nieves to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Nieves, 37, appeared in 36 games with the Phillies last season and is a .243/.281/.317 hitter in the majors. He could push Tim Federowicz for the backup catcher job in the spring.

Phillies activated C Wil Nieves from the 15-day disabled list.

Wil Nieves (quad) is on track to be activated from the disabled list on Friday.

Nieves will continue his rehab assignment Wednesday at High-A Clearwater, where he'll catch fellow rehabber Cliff Lee (elbow). The veteran backstop will beat Carlos Ruiz (concussion) back from the disabled list and should play regularly until Ruiz is ready.

Wil Nieves (quad) on Saturday played his fourth rehab game with the Gulf Coast League Phillies.

It was the second game he played at catcher. Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro said that while Nieves is making progress, "it is a little slower than we hoped." It does appear that Nieves will beat Carlos Ruiz (concussion) back from the DL, and he should play regularly behind the plate for a while assuming that's the case.

Phillies placed C Wil Nieves on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to June 19, with a right quad strain.

The move clears a spot for Tony Gwynn, Jr.'s return from the bereavement leave list. Cameron Rupp will serve as Carlos Ruiz's backup with Nieves sidelined.

Wil Nieves (quad) hopes to avoid the disabled list.

Nieves tweaked his quad Wednesday after singling in the ninth inning. He had to be helped off the field but sounded fairly optimistic in the clubhouse afterward. Consider the Phillies' backup catcher day-to-day.

Wil Nieves left Wednesday's game versus the Braves with an apparent leg injury.

Nieves came up gimpy after singling in the ninth inning and had to be helped off the field. It looked like something that could send him to the disabled list, but we'll have to what on an update from the Phillies.

Phillies signed C Wil Nieves to a one-year contract.

The financials aren't known, but Nieves is getting a major league deal. The 36-year-old has hit a surprising .299/.323/.381 over the last two seasons for the Rockies and D'Backs, but he's a career .242/.283/.314 hitter who is known more for his defense. He'll back up Carlos Ruiz in 2014.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the Phillies will sign Wil Nieves.

No word on whether it's a major or minor league deal. Nieves has batted a surprising .299/.323/.381 over the last two seasons for the Rockies and D'Backs, but he's a career .242/.283/.314 hitter whose value lies with his glove. Nieves figures to compete with Erik Kratz for the Phillies' backup catcher job behind Carlos Ruiz.
