Mark Hendrickson - R - Orioles

Orioles signed LHP Mark Hendrickson to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

The deal was agreed to late last week then finalized on Monday morning. Hendrickson did not pitch professionally in 2012 and will have to shine this spring in Orioles camp to land a spot in the Opening Day 'pen.

The Orioles expect to announce the signing of left-hander Mark Hendrickson by early next week.

Hendrickson was out of baseball last season and hasn't pitched in the majors since 2011. The 38-year-old has switched to a sidearm delivery in an effort to rejuvenate his career and will look to win a bullpen spot with the Orioles in spring training.

The deal will include a spring training invite. Hendrickson, who last pitched in the big leagues in 2011, threw bullpen sessions for the Orioles last week. The 38-year-old left-hander has switched to a sidearm delivery in an effort to rejuvenate his career.

Dan Conolly of the Baltimore Sun was told that the free agent lefty "looked good" on the mound. Hendrickson will throw again on Friday before the O's decide whether to offer him a contract. He sat out the entire 2012 season.

Jake Arrieta lasted just 4 1/3 innings Thursday and Zach Britton retired only two batters Friday, so even though the O's have an eight-man bullpen it's quite taxed. Hendrickson has a 2.87 ERA in 19 appearances for Norfolk this season.

The Rockies, Rays and Mariners had interest, but talks never got too serious with those clubs. Hendrickson's new deal includes an invitation to spring training, where he will attempt to win a spot in the Orioles' Opening Day bullpen. He posted an ugly 5.26 ERA and 1.55 WHIP last season.
