According to Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish, Travis Hafner has joined the coaching staff of Notre Dame College in Ohio.

No word on whether this officially means retirement, but Hafner likely hasn't drawn much interest this winter after batting just .202/.301/.378 over 299 plate appearances last season with the Yankees. He turns 37 in June.

It was a procedural move to open a 40-man roster spot for new reliever Mike Zagurski. Hafner, who has been out since July with a rotator cuff strain, is aiming to rejoin the Yankees' active roster in late September.

Hafner is currently limited to "tee and toss" work but is about ready to face live pitching. The veteran designated hitter has been out since late July with a rotator cuff strain. He should be back in mid-September.

Hafner has been playing through soreness for a while and finally decided it was too much to handle. It's not clear at this point how long he'll be sidelined. Derek Jeter is taking his spot on the roster.

The move will probably be made official on Sunday, with Derek Jeter (quad) returning in a corresponding roster move. Hafner has been playing through shoulder soreness for a while and it has depressed his numbers significantly. He'll spend the next few weeks getting healthy.

Travis Hafner went 0-for-2 with a walk on Monday and is 0-for-9 so far in the second half.

Tonight's 0-for dropped Hafner's OPS under .700 for the season, that even though he came in at 1.104 during April. If the Yankees had anyone in the minors banging down the door, Hafner would probably get his walking papers. As is, they lack much in the way of alternatives.

Hafner injured his left foot while hitting off a pitching machine Wednesday, but he's been available the last two days and delivered a pinch-hit double Saturday. He's likely to start at DH on Sunday against Twins righty Kyle Gibson.
