Marlins released INF-OF Chone Figgins.
Figgins tallied no extra-base hits in 32 plate appearances this spring in the Grapefruit League. He signed a minor league contract with the Fish in February after the Mariners cut ties with him in November. The 35-year-old utilityman will try to latch on with a new team. Mar 20 - 4:05 PM

Chone Figgins went 4-for-4 as the Marlins' second baseman Sunday versus the Braves.

Figgins was 2-for-14 this spring before coming through with a big game today. His versatility is the key as he attempts to win a spot on Miami's bench.

Chone Figgins went 0-for-2 with a walk on Thursday and is still hitless in 11 at-bats this spring.

The slow start doesn't bode well for Figgins' chances of making the Marlins. Still, his ability to play five positions could get him a bench spot.
Mar 7 - 3:52 PM

Marlins signed INF/OF Chone Figgins to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Figgins was horrendous in his three years with the Mariners (.227/.302/.283 over 308 games), but he's at least landed in a good spot with the Marlins. The 35-year-old has mainly played left field, second base and third base in recent seasons, and Miami is currently slated to go with Juan Pierre, Donovan Solano and a broken down Placido Polanco at those positions. The potential for playing time is there, and he should at least offer a bit of speed if he finds himself in the lineup often.

Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com reports that the Phillies have "checked in" on Chone Figgins.

Morosi notes that the extent of their interest is unclear at this time. The Phillies don't have starters locked in at third base or left field, so it makes sense that they have some interest in Figgins. Whether or not they view him as a regular isn't known. Figgins was cut loose last month by the Mariners, who ate the remaining $8 million on his contract.

Mariners released INF/OF Chone Figgins.

Figgins predictably didn't draw any interest on waivers after being designated for assignment earlier this month. The 34-year-old batted just .227/.302/.283 with a .585 OPS over 308 games with Seattle. The Mariners are still on the hook for the $8 million he's owed in 2013 while Figgins can sign with any team at the major league minimum.

Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times believes the Rays could have interest in Chone Figgins.

It sounds like mostly speculation at this point, but Figgins, who was designated for assignment by the Mariners last week, would make some sense because the Rays need help both at second base and left field. That said, he's probably not anyone's first choice given how he performed in Seattle. Topkin also lists Ryan Raburn as someone that could be a fit with the Rays.

Mariners designated INF/OF Chone Figgins for assignment.

And thus ends the tenure in Seattle of one of the biggest free agent busts in recent years. The Mariners still owed Figgins $8 million in the final year of his contract, but, given his sub-.190 average each of the last two seasons, they wisely just decided they were better off cutting ties. Figgins will turn 35 in January and might have to accept a minor league deal from someone.

Chone Figgins told John Hickey of SportsPressNW.com late Wednesday night that he wants out of Seattle.

And we'd guess that the Mariners wouldn't mind seeing him go. Figgins has been a major disappointment since signing a four-year, $36 million free agent contract before the start of the 2010 season, batting just .227/.302/.283 with four homers and 61 RBI in 308 games.

Chone Figgins delivered a game-winning sac fly as the Mariners beat the Red Sox 3-2 in 11 innings Saturday.

Jarrod Saltalamacchia couldn't hold on to the ball as Dustin Ackley scored on the play, giving the Mariners their second walkoff win of the series. Figgins, who started in left field for the second game in a row, didn't have a hit in five plate appearances tonight. Still, it was a nice moment for him.

Mariners manager Eric Wedge said Thursday that parting ways with Chone Figgins is "not even a consideration" right now.

There was plenty of speculation that Figgins would be shown the door when Miguel Olivo was activated from the disabled list, but much to the fans' chagrin, Casper Wells was optioned to the minors. Figgins has just 14 at-bats so far this month, so he's hardly a valuable member of the team at this point, so this sounds like an organization that refuses to acknowledge a sunk cost and the value of an open roster spot.

Mariners manager Eric Wedge has announced Chone Figgins will no longer be an everyday player, and that Dustin Ackley will take over as Seattle's leadoff hitter.

It's a move that's been three years in the making. Figgins has hit an absurdly poor .231/.304/.287 while stealing just 55 bases in 267 games since signing a four-year, $36 million deal in December 2009. He's hitting .189/.250/.305 through 108 plate appearances this season. Kyle Seager and Alex Liddi should split time at third going forward. The struggling Ackley's fantasy value gets a nice boost from his bump in the lineup. Figgins may never get another chance to be an everyday player.

Chone Figgins is not in Friday's lineup against the Twins.

Batting .189/.250/.305 on the year, Figgins is mired in a 1-for-23 slump. Alex Liddi will start in his place, which could become an increasingly common occurrence if Seattle's $36 million man doesn't soon show some signs of life.

Chone Figgins went 0-for-4 in Thursday's loss and is 0-for-15 with six strikeouts in his last three games.

Now that Mike Carp is back, the Mariners should strongly consider pulling the plug on Figgins as a regular. His average is down to .189, and while he has surprised with two early homers, he's already struck out 28 times in 95 at-bats.

Chone Figgins went 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI in Thursday's 5-4 win over the Tigers.

The veteran also swiped his second bag of the season. It marks Figgins' third three-hit game of the month -- the first time he has achieved this since August 2009. Seeking to rebound from last year's debacle, he is now batting .236 with a disappointing 21/8 K/BB ratio.
