Cash, who turns 37 on Saturday, becomes the youngest active manager in the majors. He ultimately got the job over former Mariners manager and current Royals bench coach Don Wakamatsu. "We are proud to introduce Kevin as our manager," Rays principal owner Stuart Sternberg said in a statement. "His energy and dynamic personality will fit seamlessly with our clubhouse. We are fortunate to have such a talented individual, and Tampa Bay native, to lead our club as we strive to achieve new heights as a team and organization."

Former major league catcher Kevin Cash has decided to retire.

He'll remain involved in the game, as Cash, 34, has caught on with the Blue Jays as a major league advance scout. The defense-first backstop posted an ugly .183/.248/.278 career batting line over parts of eight seasons for the Red Sox, Blue Jays, Rays, Yankees and Astros.

The definition of a defense-first catcher, Cash has put together a horrendous .183/.248/.278 batting line over eight big league seasons. He'll likely be given a shot to compete for the backup job in spring training.

Astros purchased the contract of C Kevin Cash from Triple-A Round Rock.

Cash, 32, was batting .174/.208/.174 over 23 at-bats with Triple-A Round Rock. The veteran receiver has a similarly putrid .186/.248/.287 batting line in the major leagues, so he should fit right in with the Astros. He'll function as the primarly backup to Humberto Quintero until Jason Castro is deemed ready, likely after Memorial Day.
