Contreras is permitted to stay on the bereavement list for a minimum of three days and a maximum of seven. The Pirates have called up Jared Hughes to replace him on the active roster.

Pirates purchased the contract of RHP Jose Contreras from Triple-A Indianapolis.

Working his way back from Tommy John surgery, Contreras posted a 3.86 ERA and 8/1 K/BB ratio over seven frames in the minors. He'll work in middle relief.

Contreras, who is currently working his way back from Tommy John surgery, is set to pitch for Triple-A Indianapolis on Sunday and Monday. He'll then rest for two days before joining the Pirates' active roster.

Contreras has come along as expected in his rehab from Tommy John surgery. He could be an option to join the Pirates' bullpen sometime in May.

Jose Contreras (elbow) will throw two innings in an extended spring training game on Wednesday.

It will be his first game action since undergoing Tommy John surgery. The Pirates are hoping Contreras will be an option to join their bullpen sometime during the first half.

"Great, no problems," the veteran right-hander said. Contreras is recovering from Tommy John surgery and it's not clear when he might be ready to contribute for the Pirates.

Contreras appeared in just 17 games for the Phillies in 2012, posting an ugly 5.27 ERA. The 41-year-old right-hander is recovering from multiple elbow injuries and might not be ready for the start of the 2013 season.

Jose Contreras recently threw for the Twins at their spring training complex, but they're not expected to sign him.

1500ESPN.com's Darren Wolfson asked a Twins official if Contreras' workout was meaningful or random, and the official replied "random." Contreras, 41, is planning on trying to pitch through tears in his ulnar collateral ligament and flexor pronator in his right elbow, but so far no one appears to have interest in him.

Phillies transferred RHP Jose Contreras from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.

Contreras has a complete tear of the ulnar collateral ligament and a flexor pronator tear in his right elbow. He turns 41 this year and will likely require Tommy John surgery, but he hasn't ruled out the possibility of continuing his career.

Jose Contreras (elbow) indicated Saturday that plans on rehabbing and returning when healthy rather than retiring.

"I'll try my best in the rehab," he said. "It's going to be hard but I'll give it a shot." Contreras will turn 41 this winter and likely needs Tommy John surgery, which would sideline him until midseason next year. The Phillies have a $2.5 million option on him for 2013, which will be declined. Perhaps they'll bring him back cheaply next year, though.

Jose Contreras has been diagnosed with a UCL and flexor tear in his right elbow.

He's officially out for the season, and this has the potential to be a career-ending injury. Contreras underwent a similar surgery to his elbow last season, and struggled to regain his form since being activated from the disabled list. The Phillies are almost certain to decline his $2.5 million option for 2013.

Contreras is scheduled to undergo an MRI on Saturday, but he's likely dealing with a significant injury. The Phillies recalled Michael Schwimer from Triple-A Lehigh Valley in a corresponding move.

Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said Friday that Jose Contreras (elbow) will be placed on the disabled list.

Contreras left Friday's game with what was termed as right elbow soreness, but it's pretty clear he may have suffered a major injury. He's scheduled to undergo an MRI on Saturday, after which we'll have a better idea of his status moving forward. The Phillies will add another reliever before Saturday's game.
