He is expected to need about 10-12 weeks of rest and rehab, which puts his season in jeopardy. Yankees placed 3B Kevin Youkilis on the 15-day disabled list with a lumbar spine sprain.

No word yet on how long he may be sidelined, but since it's a recurring issue, it may be longer than 15 days. It's the same ailment that landed Youkilis on the disabled list at the end of April. He managed to hit just.146/.239/.220 with one RBI and 13 strikeouts in 41 at-bats after returning from the disabled list on May 31.

Youkilis has been on the disabled list since April 28 with a lower back injury, but he's back in the lineup Friday in the DH spot. He returns to a .266/.347/.422 batting line with two homers over 72 plate appearances.

Youkilis also played seven innings at third base. The 33-year-old has been sidelined for a month with a lower back strain, but the hope is that two rehab games will be enough to ensure his return this weekend against the Red Sox.

Youkilis, out since April 27 with a lumbar spine strain, took six at-bats Wednesday in a simulated game. It's not clear if he'll go out on a brief rehab assignment, but he's getting close.

It was reported previously that Youkilis played in an extended spring game Tuesday, but that was actually also a simulated game. It's not clear when he'll be ready to play in a real game, but he's not far off. "I can’t tell you," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "I think you have to give him a few days in a row before you evaluate to make sure that his back is healed and it doesn’t come back. The last two days have been pretty good, so he’s getting closer."

Youkilis has hit off a tee and taken soft-toss and is nearing the next step. The Yankees haven't set a timetable for his return, but it's looking like he'll probably be back sometime in late May or early June.
