In his season debut, Jesse Foppert retired the only batter he faced Sunday for the Rookie AZL Giants.
Foppert, back in his original organization, has turned into a big long shot to ever again contribute at the major league level. He's one of those increasingly rare pitchers that just couldn't make it all the way back from Tommy John surgery. Mon, Jun 25, 2007 02:53:00 PM

The Giants signed RHP Jesse Foppert to a minor league contract and assigned him to Triple-A Fresno.

Foppert rejoins the organization after leaving in the Randy Winn trade, with the Mariners releasing him last week. Once an elite prospect, Foppert's stock has declined significantly since Tommy John surgery in 2003. He's a long shot to have a fantasy impact.

Mariners released RHP Jesse Foppert.

He was also released by the club in October, but he was re-signed to a minor league deal the following month. Foppert made two appearances this spring, pitching a perfect inning in the first and then retiring none of the six batters he faced in the second.

Jesse Foppert faced six members of his former team Sunday and didn't retire any of them while taking the loss to the Giants.

Foppert was charged with six runs after giving up three hits and walking three. He threw a perfect inning in his only previous appearance this spring, but he wasn't a candidate to make the Mariners.

Mariners re-signed RHP Jesse Foppert, RHP Renee Cortez, RHP Cibney Bello and RHP Jared Eichelberger to minor league contracts.

The decision to release Foppert last month didn't signal the end of his career with the Mariners organization. The 26-year-old Foppert has struggled mightily to make it back from Sept. 2003 Tommy John surgery, and he made just five appearances at Triple-A Tacoma last season. He's turned into quite a long shot, but his potential makes him worth keeping around.

Mariners released RHP Jesse Foppert.

Three years later, Foppert still hasn't been able to make it all the way back from Tommy John surgery. He only made five appearances for Triple-A Tacoma this season, the last coming on May 19. Just 26, he might not be completely hopeless. However, there's little chance of him contributing next year.

Jesse Foppert returned from the DL at Triple-A Tacoma and allowed one run in an inning of relief on Thursday.

Foppert had been sidelined with a strained left quad. He has a 4.15 ERA in 8 2/3 innings.

Mariners optioned RHP Jesse Foppert to Triple-A Tacoma.

"I can't say that it's unexpected," Foppert said. "I know they want me to be a starter and their five starters are already set." Foppert struggled mightily in his final two appearances of the spring. He's still something of a 2006 sleeper, but he doesn't appear all that close to helping the Mariners.

Jesse Foppert was yanked before he could retire a batter today against the A's. He walked three and was charged with five runs.

Foppert through nine straight balls at one point. He was already on his way to Triple-A Tacoma to start the year, but today's struggles may ensure that he's included in the next cut down.

Jesse Foppert gave up five runs in an inning of relief to take a loss against the Rockies today.

Foppert was originally scheduled to start, but Jamie Moyer got the nod after rain prevented him from working in a minor league game in the morning. Foppert gave up three hits and walked three. He's going to have to keep working his way back from Tommy John surgery in Triple-A.

Jesse Foppert, who struggled with a blister in his last outing, threw three scoreless innings today against the Cubs.

No strikeouts for Foppert, who has a 3/6 K/BB ratio even though he's allowed just one run in seven innings this spring. Expectations are that he'll head to Triple-A for the beginning of the year.

Jesse Foppert reportedly developed a blister during Thursday's poor outing, but didn't tell anyone about it.

The blister might actually be good news, because the other explanations for Foppert looking horrible aren't so easy to fix. "He wants to do well, didn't want to cry wolf," manager Mike Hargrove said. "We've all been there. The best thing is to let people know. If he tells you, the trainer can work on him and limit the damage."

Jesse Foppert walked four while allowing one run in two innings versus the White Sox today.

He didn't give up a hit, but there wasn't much to be encouraged about here. Along with the poor control, Foppert was averaging 85-86 mph with his fastball, topping out at 88 mph. He'll continue what's been a lengthy recovery from Tommy John surgery in Triple-A.

Jesse Foppert started against the Padres and worked two hitless innings today.

He walked one and struck out two. Foppert is going to be a sleeper even if he heads back to Triple-A Tacoma to start the year.

Manager Mike Hargrove said yesterday that Jesse Foppert is "a long shot to make the rotation."

"Seeing what he has, though, it wouldn't be a shocker if he made the team," Hargrove said. "A surprise, yes. But not a shocker." If Foppert is healthy, he'll force his way into the Mariners' plans soon enough.
