Diamondbacks re-signed 1B Mike Jacobs to a minor league contract.
The 33-year-old slugger performed well after signing with the D'Backs midway through the 2013 season, slashing .304/.365/.520 with 18 homers and 65 RBI in 82 games at Triple-A Reno in the hitter-friendly PCL. He'll presumably head to spring training with a chance to compete for a reserve role. Sat, Nov 2, 2013 02:00:00 PM

Jacobs, who will turn 32 next month, hasn't appeared in a major league game since 2010 but had a nice .279/.362/.486 batting line with 18 homers over 378 plate appearances for Reno this season. He could get a few pinch-hitting chances down the stretch.

Jacobs spent most of the 2010 season with the Mets' and Blue Jays' Triple-A affiliates, batting a combined .273/.335/.482 with 21 homers and 91 RBI over 469 at-bats. He'll serve as insurance at Triple-A in case Todd Helton suffers another long-term injury.

A source told the Denver Post's Troy Renck that the Rockies have signed Mike Jacobs to a minor league contract.

Like Todd Helton, Jacobs is a left-handed hitter, so he probably won't fit on the Rockies' Opening Day roster. Still, he makes for decent Triple-A insurance as a fallback option in case Helton gets hurt again.

Blue Jays acquired first baseman Mike Jacobs from the Mets for a player to be named.

The Jays wanted a first baseman for Las Vegas after moving Brett Wallace yesterday. Jacobs was hitting .260/.313/.478 with 15 hmoers in 339 at-bats for Triple-A Buffalo. He opened the season in the majors with the Mets, but he had just 24 at-bats before being sent down.

Jacobs was designated for assignment last weekend after batting .208/.296/.375 in 24 at-bats. He cleared waivers on Wednesday, but took an extra day to decide whether to accept an assignment to Triple-A or become a free agent. In the end, he opted to remain in the Mets' organization.

Mike Jacobs has cleared waivers, according to Adam Rubin of ESPNNewYork.com.

Mets designated first baseman Mike Jacobs for assignment.

Signed to a minor league deal this offseason, Jacobs had a golden opportunity to seize the starting first base job in New York after Daniel Murphy went down. Instead, he hit 208/.296/.375 in 24 at-bats, some of which came in the cleanup spot, where Jerry Manuel started him on Opening Day. The guess here is that Ike Davis is about to receive a promotion, leaving Jacobs, likely to clear waivers with the way he has played the last two years, the starting first baseman at Triple-A. His days as a starter in the major leagues appear to be over.
