The deal includes a spring training invite. Vargas, 34, had a 3.69 ERA in 20 starts this past season with the Brewers' Triple-A affiliate and hasn't pitched in the big leagues since 2010. He'll likely serve as organizational depth with Triple-A Buffalo.

Brewers signed RHP Claudio Vargas to a minor league contract.

Vargas will report to Triple-A Nashville, where he's expected to be used as a starting pitcher. The 33-year-old announced his retirement last summer, only to sign with Vaqueros Laguna of the Mexican League for the 2012 season. He hasn't pitched in the big leagues since 2010 as a member of the Brewers and is unlikely to make a major impact.

Claudio Vargas has announced his retirement.

Vargas signed a minor league deal with the Rockies in January and posted an ugly 11.08 ERA and 19/13 K/BB ratio over his first 26 innings with Triple-A Colorado Springs. The 32-year-old right-hander posted a 4.83 ERA in parts of eight major league seasons between the Nationals, Brewers, Diamondbacks, Mets and Dodgers.

Claudio Vargas could miss the rest of the spring with a hamstring injury sustained Sunday, according to the Denver Post's Troy Renck.

Vargas, who was signed to a minor league deal in January, probably wasn't going to make the Rockies as a middle reliever. He'll have to pitch well in Triple-A before he gets another shot.

Rockies signed RHP Claudio Vargas to a minor league contract.

The Dodgers cut ties with Vargas in August of last season after he posted a miserable 5.89 ERA over 10 starts at the Triple-A level. He probably won't land on the Rockies' Opening Day roster, but a better showing in the minor leagues may put him in line for an emergency call-up down the road.

Brewers released RHP Claudio Vargas.

Brewers designated RHP Claudio Vargas for assignment.

The Brewers are still looking for something resembling consistency in their bullpen and Vargas wasn't going to give it to them. In 19 2/3 innings, Vargas accumulated an ERA of 7.32 and a WHIP of 1.93. He'll wait and see if anyone claims him, but with plenty of other mediocre relievers out there, he's likely to find work hard to come by. His spot will be taken by Chris Capuano.

Brewers re-signed RHP Claudio Vargas to a one-year, $900,000 contract.

He posted an impressive 1.74 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 30/15 K/BB ratio in 41 1/3 innings this past season yet settled for a deal under $1 million in an offseason where guys like LaTroy Hawkins and Brandon Lyon are inking high-paying multi-year contracts.

The Brewers really played it cheap this summer. Vargas will be aked to provide rotation depth with Dave Bush and Jeff Suppan on the disabled list, but isn't currently stretched out enough and may pitch out of the bullpen initially. He had a a 1.64 ERA in eight relief outings for the Dodgers.
