Diamondbacks activated C Gerald Laird from the 60-day disabled list; designated him for assignment.

The veteran backstop could attract some interest on waivers, otherwise he would continue to provide organizational catching depth for the Diamondbacks. He had been on the shelf with back spasms since early April.
Aug 20 - 7:04 PM

Diamondbacks transferred C Gerald Laird from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.

Laird's injury as originally described as lower back spasms, but it's clearly much more serious than that. The move opens up a 40-man roster spot for Danny Dorn.
Apr 21 - 5:01 PM

Diamondbacks placed C Gerald Laird on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to April 9, with lower back spasms.

Tuffy Gosewisch and Jordan Pacheco will handle the catching duties for the next couple weeks. A.J. Schugel has replaced Laird on the roster.
Apr 12 - 12:37 PM

Gerald Laird was scratched from the Diamondbacks' lineup on Saturday due to back issues.

Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale wanted the veteran to catch Archie Bradley in his major league debut, but Laird didn't feel good in pregame warmups. Tuffy Gosewisch gets the call instead against the Dodgers.
Apr 11 - 4:10 PM

Diamondbacks purchased the contract of C Gerald Laird from Triple-A Reno.

Laird made Arizona's Opening Day roster after going into camp as a non-roster player. He'll share playing time with Tuffy Gosewisch behind the plate, which is likely to be the worst catching situation in the majors.
Apr 4 - 11:56 PM

According to Jack Magruder of FOX Sports Arizona, Gerald Laird has signed a five-day extension with the Diamondbacks.

Laird had an opt-out in his contract that had to be exercised (or not) by Tuesday. He'll now remain in camp until Sunday. Arizona is desperate for catching options and despite a batting average of just .200 this spring, it's very likely that Laird will make the Opening Day roster.
Mar 31 - 3:12 PM

Gerald Laird plated the Diamondbacks' lone run with a sacrifice fly in Sunday's loss to the Rockies.

The veteran backstop had an opportunity to seize the team's starting job behind the plate this spring, but has hit just .200 (5-for-25) with four RBI. He's expected to begin the season as a backup to Tuffy Gosewisch, combining to form the worst catching combination in Major League Baseball.
Mar 29 - 10:27 PM

Diamondbacks signed C Gerald Laird to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Arizona has badly needed catching depth since trading Miguel Montero, but Laird isn't a very exciting add. The 35-year-old batted just .204/.275/.257 in 167 plate appearances last season for the Braves and he is a .244/.305/.353 career hitter in the majors. Tuffy Gosewisch still projects to be the Diamondbacks' starter.
Feb 2 - 2:33 PM

Gerald Laird (oblique) returned to the Braves lineup without missing a beat on Friday, going 2-for-4 with a run scored in a victory over the Diamondbacks.

The veteran backstop sat out the previous three contests due to a strained right oblique. He will continue to share the bulk of the playing time with Christian Bethancourt while Evan Gattis is stowed away on the disabled list.

Gerald Laird (oblique) expects to return to the lineup Friday.

Christian Bethancourt has caught three straight games while Laird nurses a right oblique strain that he originally suffered a couple weeks ago. However, Laird thinks he'll be ready to roll Friday. "If (Bethancourt) wasn’t here I could play, (Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez) knows that," said Laird. "(Gonzalez) just said, let’s nip it in the bud and then Friday will probably be my day to play."

Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said Thursday that it appears Gerald Laird did not suffer a concussion.

Laird left Thursday's game against the Rockies after he was hit in the mask by Corey Dickerson's backswing, but it appears he's avoided a serious issue. Consider the catcher day-to-day.

Gerald Laird left Thursday's game against the Rockies in the eighth inning after he was hit in the mask by Corey Dickerson's backswing.

Laird was on the ground for a moment before being helped off the field. He was replaced in the game by Evan Gattis. The Braves should pass along on update on Laird's status soon, but he'll undoubtedly be tested for a possible concussion.

Gerald Laird went 2-for-4 with two RBI in Friday's 3-2 victory over the Rockies.

Laird did most of the heavy lifting for the Braves' offense on Friday, as he delivered an RBI double in the bottom of the second inning and later hit a go-ahead RBI single in the eighth. The veteran backstop is batting .208/.288/.264 through 18 games this season. He's a perfectly useful backup catcher, but nights like this one figure to be few and far between.

Gerald Laird went 2-for-4 with a run scored against the Brewers on Tuesday.

Laird has appeared in 15 games this year, but Tuesday was his first multi-hit game. The catcher also scored in the Braves' three-run third inning. Laird is primarily a backup to Evan Gattis, who missed Tuesday's game due to viral symptoms.
