Red Sox re-signed RHP Edwin Almonte to a minor league contract.
The Red Sox, like a few other teams, used the non-tender deadline as a way to get borderline players off the 40-man roster without having to send them through waivers. It's a smart strategy and it's probably something we'll see more of in the future, which is annoying only because it creates more work for us. Mon, Dec 22, 2003 06:11:00 PM

Red Sox non-tendered RHP Edwin Almonte.

Almonte, picked up off waivers from the Mets last month, likely will be re-signed to a minor league deal.

Edwin Almonte has struck out eight in 10 scoreless innings in the Dominican Winter League.

Almonte, claimed off waivers from the Mets last month, has given up nine hits and walked three. He'll get a chance to compete for a spot in the Boston bullpen next spring.

Red Sox claimed RHP Edwin Almonte off waivers from the Mets.

Not one of Theo Epstein's better waiver claims. Almonte's been a very good minor league reliever for several years, but that changed last season (5.40 ERA between Triple-A Charlotte and Norfolk), and even when he was pitching well, he was never viewed as that great if a prospect. It's unlikely that he'll help the Red Sox.

Mets recalled RHP Edwin Almonte from Triple-A Norfolk.

Almonte had a 12.10 ERA in nine appearances with the Mets earlier this season. He should pitch only when the Mets are behind.

Mets optioned RHP Edwin Almonte to Triple-A Norfolk.

Almonte had a 12.10 ERA in nine appearances with the Mets. He shouldn't return until September.

Mets recalled RHP Edwin Almonte from Triple-A Norfolk.

Almonte isn't a future closer, but in order to justify the Roberto Alomar trade, the Mets may decide to give him some save opps. If he does well over his first few appearances, he could be worth grabbing in NL-only leagues.

Edwin Almonte will be called up later today.

Almonte fills the roster spot of Armando Benitez. He has four saves in five appearances for Triple-A Norfolk since coming over in the Roberto Alomar trade, and the Mets plan to eventually give him a look in the ninth inning.

Mets recalled RHP Edwin Almonte from Triple-A Norfolk.

Orber Moreno deserved a promotion for more than Almonte did, but he's not on the 40-man roster, and it's likely that the Mets only wanted someone for a day or two.

RHP Edwin Almonte was traded from the White Sox to the Mets in the Roberto Alomar deal.

Almonte, a 26-year-old reliever, has received some attention because of his outstanding minor league numbers as a closer on 2001 and 2002, but he's strugged this year, posting a 6.88 ERA for Triple-A Charlotte. At best, he'll be a decent setup man in the majors. The Mets would have been better off getting Matt Ginter here.
