The Mets plucked Sweeney out of the independent Atlantic League and will use him as organizational relief depth. The 36-year-old right-hander posted a decent 3.14 ERA and 14/6 K/BB ratio over 37 major league innings last season and could have an impact eventually.

Diamondbacks claimed RHP Brian Sweeney off waivers from the Mariners.

Sweeney appeared in 24 games with the Mariners this past season, posting a 3.16 ERA and 14/6 K/BB ratio over 37 innings. The 36-year-old right-hander doesn't miss many bats, but new D-Backs GM Kevin Towers has a reputation for finding diamonds in the rough for his bullpen. We'll see if this is one of them.

Padres recalled RHP Brian Sweeney from Triple-A Portland.

Sweeney gave up the Giants' three straight homers last night, taking his ERA from 2.86 to 3.33. There are contenders throughout the league who would love to have Sweeney and Scott Cassidy in middle relief right now. The Padres, though, have decided they don't have room for either.

Brian Sweeney is a candidate to join the starting rotation if the Padres decided to replace Dewon Brazelton.

Brazelton, who has allowed 17 earned runs in 6 1/3 innings this season, will likely get one more start bfore the Padres consider inserting Sweeney or another pitcher. Even with Petco helping him, Sweeney probably wouldn't have fantasy value as a starting pitcher.
