Padres signed INF Clint Barmes to a one-year, $1.5 million contract with a club option for 2016.
CBS Sports' Jon Heyman writes that the option is worth between $2-4 million. Barmes was limited to 48 games due to injury this past season with the Pirates while batting just .245/.328/.294 with zero homers and seven RBI. He'll likely serve as a utility infielder in San Diego while Alexi Amarista figures to take over at shortstop now that Everth Cabrera has been non-tendered. Dec 5 - 2:22 PM

The deal is pending a physical. Injuries limited Barmes to just 48 games this past season. He hit .245/.328/.294 while appearing at every position on the infield. With Everth Cabrera non-tendered, Barmes could find a home at shortstop with the Pads.

Pirates activated INF Clint Barmes from the 15-day disabled list.

Barmes wound up missing close to two months with a Grade 3 groin strain. The infielder was sporting a rough .239/.320/.284 batting line in 42 games before the injury.

Pirates manager Clint Hurdle "expressed cautious optimism" that Clint Barmes (groin) could rejoin the club on Monday.

Barmes has played five rehab games, and he's slated to play two more before the start of the series against the Cardinals. Barmes has been out since July 6 with a severe left groin strain.

Clint Barmes (groin) is expected to remain on his minor league rehab assignment through the end of August.

Barmes played in his first rehab game Wednesday at Double-A Altoona and will spend about a week there before eventually moving to Triple-A Indianapolis. "I think there'll be a succession built in similar to spring training because it's been six weeks since he played," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle told reporters. The light-hitting veteran infielder has been out since June 30 with a Grade 3 abductor strain.

Clint Barmes (groin) will begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Altoona on Wednesday.

He'll eventually move up to Triple-A Indianapolis. Pirates manager Clint Hurdle indicated that Barmes will remain on the rehab assignment for a while. "It won’t be quite like revisiting spring training, but he has been out six weeks," Hurdle said.
Aug 13 - 10:43 AM

Clint Barmes (groin) won't begin a rehab assignment until he's fully comfortable stopping, starting and running the bases.

Barmes has been taking batting practice and fielding grounders but still isn't feeling good enough to run. He's been out since late June.
Aug 7 - 7:45 PM

Pirates placed SS Clint Barmes on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to June 30, with a Grade 3 adductor sprain.

Barmes hasn't played for a week, so he apparently had been holding out hope that the ailment would get better. He's expected to be sidelined for 4-6 weeks. Michael Martinez has replaced Barmes on the roster.
Jul 6 - 11:52 AM

Clint Barmes went 4-for-5 with a run scored in Thursday's extra-inning win over the Reds.

He was also hit by a pitch in the game-winning rally in the 12th inning. Barmes had three singles and a double, notching his first four-hit game since May 30, 2009. The 35-year-old managed to improve his batting average from .227 to .263 in just one day. We're not counting on many big days moving forward.
Jun 19 - 5:44 PM

Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said Friday that Clint Barmes will see time at second base and third base this spring as he prepares for his new utility role.

The Pirates are intent on handing the starting shortstop position to Jordy Mercer for 2014, which shifts the defensive-minded Barmes into a utility role. Since Barmes offered very little with the bat anyways, he can continue to be ignored for fantasy purposes.
Mar 1 - 9:18 AM

Pirates signed SS Clint Barmes to a one-year, $2 million contract.

The slick fielding 34-year-old shortstop will serve as a backup to Jordy Mercer in 2014. He's irrelevant in all but the very deepest of NL-only formats.

Buster Olney of reports that Clint Barmes' new one-year deal with the Pirates is worth $2 million.

Barmes just finished his two-year, $10.5 million deal with the Pirates and will take a paycut to stick around as a utility player. The 34-year-old hit just .211/.249/.309 with five home runs and 23 RBI over 330 plate appearances this past season, but plays quality defense and will serve as a backup to Jordy Mercer in 2014.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the Pirates have re-signed Clint Barmes.

Details are still being finalized, so no word yet on the exact terms. Barmes just finished up a two-year, $10.5 million deal with Pittsburgh, but he's going to have to settle for less this time around.

Buster Olney of ESPN reports that the Pirates are close to re-signing Clint Barmes.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal hears that same. Barmes has only hit .221/263/.316 over the past two seasons in Pittsburgh, but the Pirates like his glove. If he returns, he'll likely function in a utility infielder role.

Bill Brink of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette says the Pirates have "kept in touch" with shortstop Clint Barmes.

The Pirates are looking for a capable defensive shortstop to pair with Jordy Mercer. Barmes doesn't bring much with the bat, but he consistently rates among baseball's best defensive shortstops year after year.
