Clint Barmes told Jessica Kleinschmidt of FanDuel that he has decided to retire from baseball.
Barmes made the decision in the middle of a recent game with Triple-A Omaha and was given his release by the Royals on Monday. "Coming back I think I decided I would give Triple-A a little time to help make my decision easier for me as far as having no regrets when I do make that decision," said Barmes. "At this point I can honestly say I can look back and know I don’t have any regrets." Barmes produced a .245/.294/.379 career batting line over 13 seasons to go along with 89 homers and 415 RBI. Royals signed INF Clint Barmes to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Barmes had no luck on the free agent market this winter after the Padres declined his $2 million option for 2016. The soon-to-be 37-year-old batted just .232/.281/.353 in 98 games last season for San Diego, but he still plays fairly steady defense at shortstop. Consider him organizational infield depth for the Royals. Ross Ohlendorf and Brian Duensing have agreed to similar minor league contracts with the defending World Series champs.

Barmes was limited to 48 games due to injury this past season with the Pirates while batting just .245/.328/.294 with zero homers and seven RBI.
