Mariners released C Humberto Quintero.

The M's will use John Buck as the primary backup to starting catcher Mike Zunino. Quintero posted a weak .625 OPS in 14 games this spring in the Cactus League, but it's usually not difficult for catchers to find work.

Mariners re-signed C Humberto Quintero to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Quintero will have a real shot at claiming the backup job behind starting catcher Mike Zunino this spring in Mariners camp. The 34-year-old veteran is a .234/.267/.327 career hitter at the major league level, but he plays good defense and is familiar to the Seattle pitchers. Jesus Sucre will be his primary competition.
Jan 6 - 2:41 PM

Humberto Quintero had a two-run homer and an RBI groundout Wednesday in the Mariners' come-from-behind 9-7 win over the Blue Jays.

Quintero is 8-for-21 with two homers since landing with the Mariners after Mike Zunino got hurt. He's now tied his career high with four homers in 85 at-bats this season. Quintero is the better bet than Henry Blanco in AL-only leagues with Zunino out, but, obviously, he's not anywhere near this good.

Steven Lerud is the backup.
