Blue Jays signed C Humberto Quintero to a minor league contract with an invite to spring training.
Quintero spent 2015 playing at Triple-A Pawtucket in the Red Sox minor league system. He hit .257/.284/.354 with seven homers and 33 RBI across 288 at-bats. The 36-year-old catcher last saw major league action with the Mariners in 2014, though even that was just a three-game cup of coffee. Nov 20 - 10:00 AM

Humberto Quintero will not be opting out of his minor league contract with the Red Sox.

Manager John Farrell told Quintero that the team still had not settled on a second catcher. Quintero's struggled this spring, hitting only .188/.278/.250 in 16 at-bats, but he's apparently holding out hope that he could still make the big club. Ryan Hanigan is the team's projected starter, with Sandy Leon and Quintero acting as potential back-ups. Prospect Blake Swihart lurks in the background.

Mariners released C Humberto Quintero.

The M's will use John Buck as the primary backup to starting catcher Mike Zunino. Quintero posted a weak .625 OPS in 14 games this spring in the Cactus League, but it's usually not difficult for catchers to find work.

Mariners re-signed C Humberto Quintero to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Quintero will have a real shot at claiming the backup job behind starting catcher Mike Zunino this spring in Mariners camp. The 34-year-old veteran is a .234/.267/.327 career hitter at the major league level, but he plays good defense and is familiar to the Seattle pitchers. Jesus Sucre will be his primary competition.

Humberto Quintero had a two-run homer and an RBI groundout Wednesday in the Mariners' come-from-behind 9-7 win over the Blue Jays.

Quintero is 8-for-21 with two homers since landing with the Mariners after Mike Zunino got hurt. He's now tied his career high with four homers in 85 at-bats this season. Quintero is the better bet than Henry Blanco in AL-only leagues with Zunino out, but, obviously, he's not anywhere near this good.
