Mets signed 1B Chris Shelton to a minor league contract.
A former stathead favorite, Shelton has failed to do anything noteworthy in the majors since 2006. Now 30, he hit just .249/.320/.393 with 10 homers over 285 Triple-A at-bats last season while in the Astros organization. He's unlikely to appear with the big league club this season unless injuries strike. Sun, Feb 20, 2011 09:35:00 AM

Chris Shelton went 3-for-3 with four RBI and a walk in Tuesday's rout of the Pirates.

Shelton was a Pirate before getting selected in the Rule 5 draft six years ago. He's bounced around ever since. With five hits in six at-bats the last two days, he's now hitting .323 this spring. Still, the Astros only figure to carry him if Lance Berkman has a setback and winds up on the DL.

Astros signed 1B Chris Shelton to a minor league contract.

Shelton notched 26 at-bats for the Mariners in 2009, batting .231/.286/.308. For Triple-A Tacoma, Shelton hit .314/.396/.509 in 405 at-bats and has seen previous major league action with the Rangers and Tigers.

Mariners sent first baseman Chris Shelton outright to Triple-A Tacoma.

Shelton was designated for assignment last week after batting .231/.286/.308 in 26 at-bats for the Mariners. He'll return to a .319 batting average, 23 doubles, a triple, 12 home runs and 64 RBI at Tacoma.

Mariners designated first baseman Chris Shelton for assignment.

He was dropped in order to make room for the newly-acquired Luke French on the roster. Shelton batted .231/.286/.308 with four RBI in 26 at-bats since being recalled from Triple-A Tacoma on July 9.

Mariners selected the contract of first baseman Chris Shelton from Triple-A Tacoma.

The Mariners needed an extra bench bat prior to the All-Star break. Shelton is a career .274/.346/.461 hitter in the big leagues over 1,016 plate appearances, although he hasn't had much success since 2005-2006 with the Tigers. He was raking in Tacoma, batting .319/.385/.522 in 343 plate appearances after hitting .460/.534/.720 in 50 at-bats during spring training.

Mariners reassigned 1B Chris Shelton and RHP Randy Messenger to minor league camp; optioned LHP Garrett Olson to Triple-A Tacoma.

No, spring training numbers don't mean a whole lot. Shelton, though, hit .460/.534/.720 in 50 at-bats and pretty clearly earned a spot. Instead, the Mariners are going to go with Mike Sweeney, who is a one-year option at best. It'd seem to be good news for Russell Branyan, as Sweeney probably won't be asked to play first base more than once a week. Shelton is the far more legitimate option there.

Chris Shelton homered off southpaw Justin Hampson as the Mariners and Padres played to a 4-4 tie on Thursday.

Shelton, a right-handed hitter, has actually hit righties a whole lot better than lefties over the course of his career. He needs to play well against southpaws this spring if he's going to have a chance of making the Mariners as a platoon first baseman or DH.

The Seattle Post Intelligencer reports that Chris Shelton "will enter camp with an excellent chance to make the Opening Day roster" despite being one of 17 non-roster players invited to spring training by the Mariners

Shelton hasn't played regularly in the majors since 2006, but the career .274/.346/.461 hitter could fit into the team's plans as a platoon partner for Russell Branyan.

The Mariners have reportedly signed Chris Shelton to a minor league deal.

A platoonmate for Russell Branyan? Shelton, 28, has hit .274/.347/.461 in 904 at-bats as a major leaguer.

Rangers designated first baseman Chris Shelton for assignment.

Shelton hit .216/.333/.330 in 97 at-bats for the Rangers. Unfortunately, all of his production came against righties and no one is going to pick him up to start against them. If he was hitting left-handers, may someone would have grabbed him.

Chris Shelton went 3-for-4 Wednesday in the defeat of the Twins.

All indications were that Shelton was going to be dropped from the roster on Wednesday, but Frank Catalanotto's back was bothering him, buying Shelton a couple of more days. Shelton is 10-for-43 with two homers as a Ranger.

Rangers recalled first baseman Chris Shelton from Triple-A Oklahoma.

He takes Jason Botts' place on the roster and should see regular playing time against left-handers, perhaps platooning with Ben Broussard. Shelton has been deserving of another extended chance in the majors since falling out of favor in Detroit, but faces an uphill battle to emerge as a fantasy asset.

Rangers sent first baseman Chris Shelton outright to Triple-A Oklahoma.

Shelton should still have the same chance of making the Rangers as he did before being designated for assignment. He may have to compete with Jason Botts for one spot on the bench.

Rangers designated first baseman Chris Shelton for assignment.

He goes to make room for Kazuo Fukumori. Shelton will still have every opportunity to claim a job as Ben Broussard's platoon partner if he clears waivers, but the Rangers deemed him the most expendable player on their 40-man roster. They wouldn't be in this situation if not for the bizarre decision to give Julio Borbon a major league deal last summer.
