Guillermo Quiroz hit a walkoff homer in the bottom of the 10th as the Giants beat the Dodgers 10-9 on Saturday.
Quiroz was the Giants' last man on the bench and was pinch-hitting for the pitcher in the 10th. The homer was the third of his major league career, with the previous two both coming in 2008. Giants purchased the contract of C Guillermo Quiroz from Triple-A Fresno.

Hector Sanchez is recovering from a shoulder injury, so Quiroz will provide added depth at catcher. He's likely to be sent back to the minors before the end of April.

He was cleared as the Red Sox made room for Rubby De La Rosa and Jerry Sands on the 40-man roster. Quiroz was with the big club in September, but only appeared in two games. He has a .206/.265/.272 batting line over in 282 plate appearances in the majors.

Quiroz batted .278/.362/.483 with 15 home runs and 52 RBI in 89 games this season for the Mariners' Triple-A affiliate. He hasn't appeared in the majors since 2010.

Mariners signed C Guillermo Quiroz to a minor league contract.

He'll also get an invite to spring training. Quiroz, 30, has had two previous stints in the Mariners' organization and even appeared in seven games at the major league level. He batted .240/.296/.388 with five home runs, 44 RBI and a .684 OPS over 274 plate appearances this season with Triple-A Tucson in the Padres' organization. Look for him to serve as catching depth in the minors.

Quiroz chose free agency after being outrighted to Triple-A Tacoma on Wednesday. The 28-year-old backstop appeared in two games with the Mariners this season, but spent most of the year between Double and Triple-A.

Now 27, Quiroz is five years removed from being one of the top catching prospects in baseball. With a .201/.266/.269 line in 234 at bats over five seasons, Quiroz will be lucky to carve out a career as a backup. More likely, he's ticketed for AAA duty for the next couple of years.

Guillermo Quiroz went 3-for-4 with three RBI as the Orioles defeated the Angels 5-2 on Sunday.

Quiroz hit a two-run single in the third, then added another RBI single in the sixth. The backup catcher could be in line for more work if Ramon Hernandez is indeed traded over the next few days, but that doesn't appear to be too likely at the moment. He'd likely be one of the worst regulars at the position if that happened, so AL-only leaguers don't need to stash him away.
