Dodgers signed RHP Angel Guzman to a minor league contract.

The deal includes an invite to spring training. Guzman, who turns 30 on Wednesday, hasn't pitched in the big leagues since undergoing major shoulder surgery in March of 2010. He posted a 4.04 ERA and 28/5 K/BB ratio over 35 2/3 innings this past season between Class A Peoria and High-A Daytona in the Cubs' organization.

The Cubs do not plan on calling up Angel Guzman once rosters expand.

Guzman, who is working his way back from shoulder surgery, has pitched well in A-ball this year, holding a 3.34 ERA and 27/5 K/BB ratio over 35 innings. But, the Cubs' primary focus is just to get him through the season healthy so he can have a normal offseason and then be ready for spring training.

Angel Guzman (shoulder) pitched two perfect innings while striking out two batters for Low-A Peoria Friday.

It's his first game action since undergoing major shoulder surgery in March of 2010. Assuming he doesn't suffer any setbacks, Guzman should be ready to rejoin the Cubs bullpen sometime next month.

Angel Guzman (shoulder surgery) has been added to the roster at Single-A Peoria.

Guzman spent the last two-plus months rehabbing his surgically-repaired right shoulder at extended spring training. He could climb back to the majors by July.

Angel Guzman (shoulder) threw another inning in a simulated game Saturday and hopes to begin a rehab assignment at Single-A Daytona by the end of May.

Coming back from major shoulder surgery, Guzman is still optimistic about pitching for the Cubs this season. He felt some soreness a couple weeks ago, but that has since went away and he said he feels much stronger. We aren't likely to see him until the second half.

Angel Guzman (shoulder) threw 20 pitches over two-thirds of an inning in a minor league game Monday.

Guzman is still working his way back from shoulder surgery and was sent to minor league camp last week. Assuming he feels OK following the outing, he's expected to go on a schedule of pitching every five days.

Angel Guzman (shoulder) threw 20 pitches in live batting practice Wednesday.

"Miracles can happen," said Cubs manager Mike Quade. Guzman, 29, missed the entire 2010 season after undergoing shoulder surgery in March. He's making good progress, but will likely begin the season in the minors building up arm strength.

Angel Guzman (shoulder) will toss a live bullpen session against hitters on Wednesday.

He hasn't done so since the 2009 season after missing all of the 2010 season due to March right shoulder surgery. Guzman will toss a fourth side session on Sunday. The 29-year-old had a 2.95 ERA and 1.05 WHIP across 55 relief appearances in 2009 but is highly unlikely to be included on the 25-man roster when Opening Day arrives. Expect him to begin the year at Triple-A Iowa and quickly work his way back up to the Cubs.

Angel Guzman (shoulder) is expected to throw a simulated game by mid-March.

The Cubs are stringing Guzman along slowly in order to avoid a setback with his surgically-repaired shoulder. He probably won't see any action in spring exhibition games and is highly unlikely to be included on the 25-man roster when Opening Day arrives. Look for Guzman to begin the year at Triple-A Iowa and quickly work his way back up to the bigs. The 29-year-old had a 2.95 ERA and 1.05 WHIP across 55 relief appearances in 2009.

The Cubs don't anticipate breaking camp with Angel Guzman, who is still recovering from shoulder surgery.

Once a top setup man, Guzman missed all of the 2010 season and is just beginning to throw off a mound again. "It's a long shot," Cubs manager Mike Quade said. "He's here, he'll work, you know he'll do that, and modern medicine is unbelievable. If he gets involved in this sometime, someday, it'll be great. Right now, it's a long way off."

Angel Guzman threw off a mound Friday for the second time since undergoing shoulder surgery last March.

Not surprisingly, he's not throwing close to full speed yet, but he's making progress. Barring a setback, Guzman should be ready by the time Opening Day rolls around. He posted a 2.95 ERA and 1.05 WHIP over 55 appearances in 2009 and would give the Cubbies a top notch setup man assuming he's made a full recovery, which is a legitimate question given the serious nature of the procedure and his history of injuries.

Cubs signed RHP Angel Guzman to a minor league contract.

Guzman was forced to skip the entire 2010 season due to major shoulder surgery. He's hoping to be fine by the start of spring training and should easily reclaim a spot in the Cubs' bullpen if he proves capable. The 28-year-old right-hander had a 2.95 ERA and 1.05 WHIP in 55 outings during the 2009 season. He remains a highly talented setup man.
