Orioles released INF Josh Barfield.

Barfield's release makes room on the Triple-A Norfolk roster for the recently-demoted Jason Berken. Barfield hasn't appeared in the majors since 2009. He'll look to sign on elsewhere as organizational depth.

Orioles signed INF Josh Barfield to a minor league contract.

Barfield batted .257/.284/.365 with six homers, 55 RBI, 12 stolen bases and a .649 OPS with the Phillies' Triple-A affiliate last year. The 29-year-old hasn't appeared in the majors since 2009 as a member of the Indians and is likely to serve as organizational fodder.

Phillies reassigned 2B Josh Barfield and Cs Dane Sardinha and Tuffy Gosewisch to minor league camp.

Barfield impressed with the bat early on in camp but has since cooled off. He has shown increased versatility, though, playing third base and the outfield in addition to second. Pete Orr, Michael Martinez and Delwyn Young will fight for the final spot on the bench, with Martinez possibly having a leg up being a Rule 5 pick.

Josh Barfield singled in two of the Phillies' four runs in Monday's win over the Red Sox.

Barfield was already behind Wilson Valdez at second base and now he has Luis Castillo to worry about as well, so he's still probably an underdog to make the Phillies. However, he's helping his chances by showing increased versatility while continuing his fine performance at the plate. He started at third base today and then moved to center field after Shane Victorino got hurt.

Josh Barfield stayed hot Thursday, going 2-for-3 with a triple against the Yankees.

Barfield could be the Phillies' second baseman on Opening Day if Chase Utley lands on the DL. The former Padre is 7-for-13 with a couple of extra-base hits this spring.

Josh Barfield went 2-for-3 with a double on Tuesday and is 4-for-5 this spring.

Barfield is going to get more at-bats than expected as a result of Chase Utley's injury. Because of his lack of versatility, he probably won't make the Phillies unless Utley needs a DL stint. However, perhaps he can impress another team as a potential regular at second base.

Phillies signed 2B Josh Barfield to a minor league deal.

Barfield has fallen completely off the map since his impressive rookie season back in 2006. He hit a decent .294/.325/.400 with five homers in 265 at-bats at Triple-A Portland this past season, but given that the Phils have that Utley guy at second base, it's not the best place for him to make a comeback.

Padres signed infielder Josh Barfield to a minor league contract.

Barfield scored just 20 major league at-bats with the Indians last season and isn't likely to have a great impact in San Diego. If he does make the Opening Day roster, it will be as a backup infielder.

Indians sent infielder Josh Barfield outright to Triple-A Columbus.

The move clears a spot on the Indians' 40-man roster. Barfield was optioned down to the Triple-A level in late June and has hit just .234 in 50 games with Columbus. He passed through waivers unclaimed.

Indians optioned 2B Josh Barfield to Triple-A Columbus.

This concludes Barfield's third stint with the Indians this season. Cleveland needed a roster space for the recently-acquired Chris Perez. Despite spending a chunk of this season on the major league club, Barfield has been given only 20 at-bats.

Indians recalled 2B Josh Barfield from Triple-A Columbus.

He joins the big league club with Asdrubal Cabrera (shoulder) heading to the DL, but is not much of an option in AL-only leagues. Barfield has a miserable 505 OPS with zero homers in the minors this season.

Indians optioned 2B Josh Barfield to Triple-A Columbus.

This was Barfield's second stint with the team and has only seen three at-bats total, although he has three hits in those at-bats. Barfield is hitting .306 at Triple-A in 49 at-bats. Barfield's stock has dipped dramatically these last few years, but still figures to have a career as a backup infielder.

Indians recall 2B Josh Barfield.

Barfield didn't even get an at bat when he was with the team the first two weeks of April. The organization had high hopes for him a couple of years ago but for now he appears to be a fringe player.

Indians optioned infielder Josh Barfield to Triple-A Columbus.

Barfield wasn't given an at-bat while with the Indians. He was used once as a pinch-runner and got caught stealing. Apparently his defensive "versatility" simply wasn't that valuable.
