Brian Bruney had season-ending surgery Monday in Colorado to repair a torn labrum in his left hip.

Bruney has been on the disabled list since late June due to the injury. He began a rehab assignment on July 31, but evidently ran into a setback. The 30-year-old right-hander appeared in one game at the major league level this season.

Too bad for Bruney, as he appeared in just one game since his call-up before going down. It's not clear at this point how long he'll be out.

White Sox purchased the contract of RHP Brian Bruney from Triple-A Charlotte.

He earned the promotion by posting a 1.85 ERA with 36 strikeouts over 34 frames at Charlotte. Bruney struggled in his time with the Sox last year, holding a 6.86 mark over 23 games. He'll work in middle relief.

Bruney was released by the White Sox in August after posting an ugly 6.86 ERA and 16/12 K/BB ratio in 19 2/3 innings last season. But he's back on board with a minor league deal and will serve as relief depth in 2012.

Bruney, 28, posted a 7.64 ERA and 2.32 WHIP in 19 appearances for the Nationals this year before they gave up on him. He made his way around the league after his release, but didn't pitch another inning in the bigs. Maybe things will turn around for the right-hander in south Chicago.

He may never get to join his old pal Francisco Rodriguez in the big leagues, but it's an interesting place for him to end up. Bruney was released by the Brewers last month after making two scoreless appearances with Triple-A Nashville. The 28-year-old right-hander was released by the Nats in May after posting a 7.64 ERA in 19 appearances.

Well, he certainly picked a place where he could make an impact if things continue to go south with Trevor Hoffman. With that in mind, Bruney's contract has an out-clause in a month. The 28-year-old right-hander posted a 7.64 ERA over his first 19 appearances with the Nationals before being designated for assignment and then released last month.

The 28-year-old right-hander put up a 7.64 ERA over 17 2/3 innings with the Nationals before being designated for assignment earlier this month. Even worse, Bruney's velocity was well below his career averages. He'll try to latch on elsewhere.

According to Bill Ladson of MLB.com, Brian Bruney plans to refuse a minor league assignment.

Bruney was designated for assignment on Sunday. He hasn't been very happy during his brief time with the Nationals, so perhaps this is for the best for both parties.
