Reds signed OF Joey Gathright to a minor league contract; assigned him to Triple-A Louisville.

The Reds purchased his contract from the Bridgeport Bluefish of the independent Atlantic League. Gathright, 31, appeared in seven games with the Red Sox last year and has a .263/.327/.303 batting line in the majors. He'll serve as minor league depth.

Gathright hadn't played in the majors since 2009 prior to his promotion in September where he functioned primarily as a pinch-runner down the stretch. The move will allow him to become a free agent, though he'll likely have to settle for a spring training invite somewhere. The 30-year-old has a .263/.327/.303 career batting line over his seven seasons of major league service.

Gathright began the season playing independent ball and signed a minor league contract with Boston on the last day of August. The speedy outfielder hasn't played in the majors since 2009, when he was on Boston's playoff roster. The 30-year-old has a .263/.327/.303 career batting line in the big leagues. He'll be used strictly as a pinch-runner, as Boston looks like find every trifling roster advantage they can to hold off Tampa Bay.

Another victim of poor spring numbers, Gathright's .167/.186/.167 showing wasn't enough to earn him a spot with the Jays. It's hard to showcase your speed if you're never on base, which is why Gathright swiped just two bases this spring. Still, someone always needs cheap speed and Gathright can do that; expect him to find a new home either before camps end or shortly thereafter.

Gathright entered camp with a clear edge over Jeremy Reed in the competition for a bench spot, but he's hit just .179. Reed collected three more hits today and is at .413 for the spring.

Gathright was acquired in late August from the Orioles for a player to be named later. He's hit .325 in 82 Triple-A games between Norfolk and Pawtucket and will serve primarily as a late-innings pinch-runner.
