Royals signed OF Charles Thomas to a minor league contract.
It's not clear if the deal includes a spring training invite. Thomas, 34, has been out of baseball for the past five seasons and last played for the Brewers' Triple-A affiliate in 2007. He figures to serve in an organizational depth role with the Royals. Sun, Jan 20, 2013 06:33:00 PM

Brewers acquired outfielder Charles Thomas from the Athletics in exchange for catcher J.D. Closser.

The Brewers don't need Thomas, but they hardly needed Closser either. Maybe Thomas could get a chance to act as a sixth outfielder later on if the team decides Tony Gwynn Jr. would be better served by getting regular playing time in Triple-A. Thomas was hitting .230/.296/.257 in 74 at-bats for Sacramento.

Athletics reassigned OF Charles Thomas, INF J.J. Furmaniak, 2B Kevin Melillo, RHP Mike Mitchell, C Landon Powell and LHP Erasmo Ramirez to minor league camp.

Thomas was hitting .333 in 30 at-bats, but even with Mark Kotsay down, the A's decided against carrying him as a reserve outfielder. Mitchell made a positive impression this spring, throwing eight scoreless innings. He could be one of the team's first pitching callups.

Athletics sent outfielder Charles Thomas outright to Triple-A Sacramento.

It's his first outright assignment, so he'll have no choice but to remain with the organization, even though he'd probably prefer to head elsewhere. He'll be in camp as a non-roster player.

Athletics designated outfielder Charles Thomas for assignment.

It's amazing he lasted on the 40-man roster as long as he did. Thomas, one of the pieces in the Tim Hudson trade with Atlanta after 2004, hasn't returned to the majors since the A's demoted him in June 2005 following a 5-for-46 start. The 28-year-old hit .274/.350/.376 for Triple-A Sacramento last year. He's a good enough defender that he doesn't have to contribute that much on offense to be a useful reserve. However, he's not a major leaguer right now.

Athletics optioned OF Charles Thomas, RHP Chad Gaudin, LHP John Rheinecker, C Jeremy Brown, IF Mike Rouse and OF Matt Watson to Triple-A Sacramento.

Thomas hit just .200/.238/.250 in 40 at-bats this spring. His defense should eventually help him get back to the majors as a reserve, but he hasn't hit since 2004. Watson will probably be the first outfielder called up by the A's.

Charles Thomas is hitting .429 (15-for-35) since being demoted to Triple-A.

Thomas looked completely lost at the plate with the A's, but he is not nearly that bad a player. Expect him to rejoin the team in the second half, because the A's aren't going to give up on him yet.

Athletics optioned outfielder Charles Thomas to Triple-A Sacramento.

The only surprise here is that it took them so long. Thomas was 5-for-46 this season and had received only 18 at-bats since the start of May. Regular playing time at Sacramento might get him hitting again, and once that happens, he'd have value to the A's as a reserve outfielder.

Charles Thomas started in left field today and got his first hit after opening the season 0-for-23.

He singled in two at-bats before being removed for a pinch-hitter against lefty Damaso Marte.

Charles Thomas went 0-for-2 last night and is now 0-for-23 on the year.

It is the second worst start in Oakland history according to the San Francisco Chronicle, behind only an 0-for-27 from Joe Wallis in 1979.

Charles Thomas started for the third straight game tonight but remained hitless in 15 at-bats this season.

Thomas, who had started over Eric Byrnes in two straight games, played right field in place of Nick Swisher tonight. He won't start against lefty Jarrod Washburn on Saturday.

Charles Thomas homered and stole a base today in his return from a sore hamstring.

Thomas, who apparently will serve as a backup at all three outfield positions, is batting .235 in 34 at-bats.

Charles Thomas is expected to miss a couple of days with a sore hamstring.

More at-bats for Bobby Kielty, who homered for the second straight day.

Outfielder Charles Thomas was traded from Atlanta to Oakland in a four-player deal.

We don't yet know whether Billy Beane sees Thomas as a potential regular over Nick Swisher. Swisher looks like the superior choice to us. Thomas might be a better option than Eric Byrnes in left field against right-handers, but he's not going to play over Byrnes at the start of the year. His acquisition definitely increases the chances of Bobby Kielty being non-tendered. Thomas, who turns 26 later this month, hit .288/.368/.445 in 83 games for the Braves last season, but he fell to .265/.367/.368 in Aug. and .211/.325/.296 in Sept. He's a very good defender, but we just don't see him as a regular.

Charles Thomas didn't start yesterday's Game 4 in part because of a sore knee, the result of a HBP on Saturday.

Thomas did pinch-hit in the game. He'll probably get the start in left field tonight.
