Troy Renck of the Denver Post writes that the Rockies are "internally discussing" whether to pursue Jorge Cantu.
Cantu was recently given his release by the Angels after exercising the opt-out clause in his minor league contract. The 30-year-old played with the Rockies' Triple-A affiliate last year and would likely serve as minor league depth if he returned to the organization. Tue, May 1, 2012 12:15:00 PM

Angels released 1B Jorge Cantu.

Cantu exercised the opt-out clause in his minor league contract with Anaheim after failing to earn a promotion during the first month of the regular season. He'll presumably look for a role with another club.

Angels reassigned INF Jorge Cantu and OF Ryan Langerhans to Triple-A Salt Lake.

Cantu went just 11-for-44 this spring, failing to win a spot on the talented Anaheim bench. The 30-year-old will function as organizational infield depth this year.

Angels signed INF Jorge Cantu to a minor league contract.

He'll also get a spring training invite. Cantu, who turns 30 later this month, batted just .194/.232/.285 with three homers and 16 RBI over 166 plate appearances with the Padres last season. The Angels have a bit of a logjam with their position players, so he's likely a longshot to make the Opening Day roster.

According to Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com, the Angels are close to signing Jorge Cantu.

He'd presumably get a minor league deal. Cantu, who turns 30 later this month, was released by the Padres last June after batting just .194/.232/.285 with three homers and 16 RBI over 155 plate appearances and finished the year with Triple-A Colorado Springs in the Rockies' organization.

Rockies signed 1B Jorge Cantu to a minor league contract.

Cantu was released by the Padres in June after batting just .194/.232/.285 over 155 plate appearances. He's not likely to reach the major leagues with the Rockies.

Padres released 1B Jorge Cantu.

It's basically a formality, as Cantu was designated for assignment by the club last week. The 29-year-old batted just .194/.232/.285 with three homers and 16 RBI over 155 plate appearances as a part-time player with the Padres. He has a measly .654 OPS over the past two seasons.

Padres designated 1B Jorge Cantu for assignment.

It shouldn't come as a big surprise. Since the arrival of top first base prospect Anthony Rizzo, the 29-year-old Cantu has seen very limited playing time. He hit just .194/.232/.285 in 57 games with San Diego.

Jorge Cantu went 2-for-3 with a walk in San Diego's loss to the Rockies on Wednesday.

The walk was Cantu's first since May 3 (23 games), while tonight was the first time all season he reached base three times in a game. It may be the last.

Jorge Cantu went 2-for-5 with a run scored in Sunday's win over the Rockies.

Cantu got the start in place of Chase Headley (ankle). With Headley expected to return to the starting lineup tomorrow, Cantu isn't worth a look in fantasy. He has just 97 at-bats through the first 40 games.

Jorge Cantu went 2-for-4 with a three-run homer in Sunday's win over the Diamondbacks.

Cantu now has two homers in his last four games, but he's not playing enough to warrant fantasy consideration. He rarely starts against lefties and Petco Park is a horrible place to try to revive a declining career.

Getting a start against a right-hander, Jorge Cantu went 0-for-4 as the Padres were shut out on Thursday.

Cantu might have a chance to overtake Brad Hawpe and become the Padres' first baseman, but he's struggling himself. The 0-for tonight left him with a .152 average in 46 at-bats, though he does have six RBI. Hawpe, who struck out as a pinch-hitter tonight, is hitting .116 with two RBI in 43 at-bats.

Jorge Cantu homered and drove in three runs on Sunday, leading the Padres to an 8-6 victory over the Astros.

The three RBI doubled his season total. Platooning with Brad Hawpe at first base, Cantu is a poor NL-only league option.

Padres signed 1B Jorge Cantu to one-year, $850,000 contract.

At such a low base salary, it's a worthwhile risk for the Padres. Cantu was awful in the second half of the 2010 season, but he still boasts a decent .274/.320/.446 career batting line and he can serve as insurance at first base if Brad Hawpe doesn't pan out. His fantasy value, though, may be zero.
Wed, Jan 26, 2011 07:37:00 PM

According to Dan Hayes of the North County Times, Jorge Cantu has a non-guaranteed major league contract with the Padres.

Official terms haven't been disclosed, but Marty Caswell of XX1090 Sports Radio in San Diego is reporting that he could earn a base salary of $850,000 with the club. Given the modest terms of his potential base salary, this is the very definition of a low-risk move.
