Phillips was already an extreme longshot to break camp with the big club, and this injury essentially seals his fate. He'll likely be sidelined for a few weeks before beginning the season at Triple-A.

Brewers signed C Paul Phillips to a minor league contract.

The deal includes an invite to spring training. Phillips, who turns 35 in April, batted .237/.281/.305 with three homers, 24 RBI and a .586 OPS over 291 plate appearances with the Indians' Triple-A affiliate last season. He'll function as organizational depth in the minors.

The deal also includes an invitation to spring training. Phillips batted .217/.280/.217 in a limited look this past year for the Rockies' Triple-A affiliate. He'll be organizational depth for the Tribe.

Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that the Indians are close to signing catcher Paul Phillips to a minor league contract.

He's expected to get an invite to spring training. Phillips, who turns 34 in April, spent most of this past season with Triple-A Colorado Springs in the Rockies' organization, but went 5-for-23 (.217) with one RBI during his time with the big club.

Phillips was 5-for-17 (.294) in six games with the Rockies during the first half of the season. The 33-year-old will give Rockies manager Jim Tracy another option behind the plate.

He'll take the place of the demoted Chris Iannetta on the 25-man roster. Phillips, 33, was batting .311/.396/.422 over his first 45 at-bats down in Triple-A. He'll function as the primary backup to Miguel Olivo, who is the biggest winner in his scenario.

Rockies manager Jim Tracy took a liking to Phillips when he was up with the club in June. Perhaps that had something to do with the 32-year-old's .325/.391/.450 batting line. Still, he won't steal playing time from Chris Iannetta as Colorado chases the National League Wild Card crown.

Phillips could have opted for free agency, but seems to think he has a better shot at the major league playing time in Colorado than he would elsewhere. In 12 games with the Rox this season, the catcher hit .325/.391/.450.

Phillips deserved a better fate after hitting .325/.391/.450 and showing solid defense in 12 games. With Yorvit Torrealba's $2 million salary and recent family trauma, however, the team's hands were tied. Though the Rockies hope Phillips clears waivers, there are quite a few teams that could use the upgrade at backup catcher.

Paul Phillips lead the way for the Rockies with four hits, three RBI, and a homer in a 7-2 win over the Cardinals on Sunday.

All three other hits were singles for Phillips. The home run was the third of his career and first since 2006. Phillips will continue to start while Yorvit Torrealba is with his family and Chris Iannetta is on the disabled list.
