Phillips was already an extreme longshot to break camp with the big club, and this injury essentially seals his fate. He'll likely be sidelined for a few weeks before beginning the season at Triple-A.

He's expected to get an invite to spring training. Phillips, who turns 34 in April, spent most of this past season with Triple-A Colorado Springs in the Rockies' organization, but went 5-for-23 (.217) with one RBI during his time with the big club.

With Yorvit Torrealba's $2 million salary and recent family trauma, however, the team's hands were tied. Though the Rockies hope Phillips clears waivers, there are quite a few teams that could use the upgrade at backup catcher.

All three other hits were singles for Phillips. The home run was the third of his career and first since 2006. Phillips will continue to start while Yorvit Torrealba is with his family and Chris Iannetta is on the disabled list.
