The Mets are planning to sign left-hander Gustavo Chacin to a minor league contract.

Once a promising young starter in the Blue Jays' system, Chacin has fallen on hard times. He was released by the Astros earlier this week after posting a 5.13 ERA in nine starts and 18 relief appearances at Triple-A Oklahoma City. The Mets aren't likely to get much out of the 30-year-old.

Astros released LHP Gustavo Chacin.

Chacin had an ugly 5.13 ERA over nine starts and 18 relief appearances with Triple-A Oklahoma City, averaging 5.0 K/9 and 3.3 BB/9. The 30-year-old southpaw appeared in 44 games with the Astros last season, but isn't likely to get another shot in the majors any time soon.

Astros re-signed LHP Gustavo Chacin to a minor league contract.

The deal also includes an invite to spring training. The 30-year-old left-hander appeared in the major leagues for the first time since 2007 this past season, posting a 4.70 ERA and 31/20 K/BB ratio over 38 1/3 innings. He hasn't been effective against left-handed batters for quite some time now, so the team will likely have better options.

Gustavo Chacin has elected to become a free agent.

Chacin chose free agency after the Astros removed him from the 40-man roster last week. The 30-year-old left-hander appeared in the major leagues for the first time since 2007 this past season, posting a 4.70 ERA and 31/20 K/BB ratio over 38 1/3 innings. It's hard to justify having him on a major league roster.

Gustavo Chacin recorded his first major league save despite giving up two runs in the 12th against the Cubs on Wednesday.

After entering a 4-1 game, Chacin got two quick outs. However, a walk to Kosuke Fukudome and a Geovany Soto homer followed. Chacin was left in anyway, and he gave up a single and a walk before getting Tyler Colvin to line out to right to end the game. We wouldn't be surprised at all if this goes down as Chacin's lone career save.

Astros recalled LHP Gustavo Chacin from Triple-A Round Rock.

He'll take the place of Bud Norris on the roster. Chacin, 29, was just optioned to the minors earlier this week after posting a 1.69 ERA in four relief appearances with the big club. He hasn't pitched regularly in the major leagues since 2007 with the Blue Jays.

Astros optioned LHP Gustavo Chacin to Triple-A Round Rock.

Chacin was called up near the beginning of May to serve as a long reliever, and did quite well in the role. Through four outings he had a 1.69 ERA and a 4/1 K/BB ratio. He could be back in the near future.

Astros purchased the contract of LHP Gustavo Chacin from Triple-A Round Rock.

Chacin, 29, hasn't appeared in the major leagues since 2007 as a member of the Blue Jays. He owns a 4.18 ERA and 1.38 WHIP over 58 big league appearances -- all as a starting pitcher, but shoulder problems derailed his career. Signed to a minor league contract by the Astros last December, Chacin had a 3.65 ERA over five starts with Triple-A Round Rock.

Astros signed LHP Gustavo Chacin to a minor league contract.

The deal also comes with an invitation to spring training. Chacin, 29, hasn't pitched in the major leagues since 2007 but went 9-4 with a 3.20 ERA and 1.37 WHIP this past season between Double-A and Triple-A.

Phillies signed Gustavo Chacin to a minor league deal.

Chacin gave up five runs and seven walks in 9 2/3 innings this spring, but he's still only 28 years old. He last pitched in the major leagues for Toronto in 2007, and went 25-15 with a 4.18 ERA in a four-year stint with the Jays. The Phillies will get him started at Triple-A.

Nationals reassigned LHP Gustavo Chacin, 1B Brad Eldred, OF Ryan Langerhans and INF Pete Orr to minor league camp; optioned OF Roger Bernadina and C Luke Montz to Triple-A Syracuse.

Chacin was talked about as the third candidate for the fifth spot in the rotation following Shawn Hill's release, but we didn't take that seriously. The former Blue Jay gave up five runs and seven walks in 9 2/3 innings this spring. In Eldred, the Nats are cutting their leading home run and RBI man for the spring. He was 6-for-20 with three bombs.

Nationals signed LHP Gustavo Chacin to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.

Chacin was 25-15 with a 4.18 ERA in his Blue Jays career, but all of his success came in 2005 and his arm appears to be shot now. He'll need to show something in Triple-A before getting another chance.

Blue Jays designated LHP Gustavo Chacin for assignment.

Chacin was solid as a rookie in 2005, winning 13 games with a 3.72 ERA, but has struggled while dealing with elbow and shoulder problems since then. He may be headed for more surgery and at this point is a long shot to pitch effectively in the majors again.

Gustavo Chacin gave up six runs in 4 1/3 innings Monday, leaving him 0-3 with a 7.77 ERA for Single-A Dunedin.

Just in case you were still holding out hope... Chacin is probably going to need more surgery if he's going to have a shot at making it back to the majors.
