Hayden Penn has reached an agreement with a Japanese team.
The signing has been rumored for over a week now. Penn is a former top prospect that's still just 25 years old, but he hasn't been able to find success in the big leagues. Perhaps he'll take the Colby Lewis route and return in a couple years after success in Japan. Sun, Jul 18, 2010 12:04:00 PM

Patrick Newman of NPB Tracker reports that the Chiba Lotte Marines are closing in on an agreement with Pirates right-hander Hayden Penn.

Newman passes along the information from a Japanese media report. Penn, 25, is currently pitching with Triple-A Indianapolis. He allowed eight runs over 2 1/3 innings (30.86 ERA) in three appearances with the Pirates in April.

The Pirates have sent Hayden Penn to extended spring training in Florida.

It's a minor surprise, as Penn was scheduled to report to Triple-A Indianapolis. "Now that he's back to being a prospect with us, we want to develop him as a starter," said Pirates general manager Neal Huntington. "In talking through it with Hayden, we felt this was best." It will likely take him a few weeks in order to be properly stretched out.

Hayden Penn has accepted an assignment to Triple-A Indianapolis.

Penn was designated for assignment last week after allowing eight runs in 2 1/3 innings at the major league level. He'll try to work on some things in the minors with the hope of rejoining the Bucs mid-summer.

Pirates sent RHP Hayden Penn outright to Triple-A Indianapolis.

Penn was designated for assignment earlier this week after allowing eight runs over 2 1/3 innings of work. He has until to Monday to report or declare himself a free agent.

Pirates designated RHP Hayden Penn for assignment.

The Pirates needed space on the 40-man roster for Monday's starter Brian Burress. Penn, who was claimed off waivers from the Marlins last month, allowed eight runs in 2 1/3 innings of work over the first week of the season.

Hayden Penn allowed four runs in an inning of relief in his Pirates debut Thursday.

The Pirates picked up Penn on a waiver claim at the end of last month and stuck him right in their pen, but he doesn't figure to get a lot of rope if he continues to struggle. On the plus side, the worse he pitches now, the more likely it is that he'll clear waivers if the Pirates try to send him down.

Pirates claimed RHP Hayden Penn off waivers from the Marlins.

The 25-year-old posted a 4.11 ERA in 70 innings at Triple-A last year, but was flogged to the tune of a 7.77 ERA in 22 innings with the Marlins. As a former top prospect, this is a decent no-risk pickup by Pittsburgh. Penn, however, will have to improve his control to stick.

Hayden Penn was pounded for five runs in three innings by the Mets on Friday.

So much for Penn's strong spring. He's given up nine runs in his last two appearances to knock himself out of rotation competition. With his ERA up to 8.31, he no longer looks like a good bet to win a spot as a middle reliver.

Hayden Penn surrendered four runs in 1 2/3 innings of relief Sunday versus the Nationals.

The poor outing will hurt Penn's chances of winning a spot in Florida's rotation, but he's still in pretty good position to make the team as a middle reliever, particularly since he's out of options. Going into today, he had allowed three runs and four hits in 8 1/3 innings.

Hayden Penn retired all nine batters he faced Wednesday in his start against the Astros.

The Marlins wanted one more look at Penn, so they returned him to the 40-man roster over the winter after dropping him last season. He’s still out of options, so if he pitches well this spring, he’ll probably be on some team’s roster to start the year. The Marlins could put him in middle relief if they don’t have room for him in the rotation.

Marlins purchased the contract of RHP Hayden Penn.

The move prevents Penn from becoming a minor league free agent. Penn, who was acquired from the Orioles last spring, had a 7.77 ERA in 22 innings before the Marlins dropped him from the roster in June. The Marlins decided it was worth taking one more look at him next spring before giving up on him.

Marlins outrighted RHP Hayden Penn to Triple-A New Orleans.

Penn was designated for assignment last week after putting up a 7.77 ERA, 2.27 WHIP and 27/20 K/BB ratio in 22 innings for the Marlins. Penn, 24, cleared waivers and has a chance to work on his game in New Orleans.

Marlins designated RHP Hayden Penn for assignment.

Penn had a 7.77 ERA, 2.27 WHIP and 27/20 K/BB ratio in 22 innings for the Marlins. He's only 24, so he's likely to get a shot elsewhere.
